Subject: Arrgghh!

I was so encouraged by the first half, AND so infuriated by seeing Rams fans (and their ridiculous signs) celebrate in the second half. I knew things were turning when the score was 17-3, and the 49ers had a first and goal at the seven after Tony Parrish's INT. A rush attempt went nowhere, then the illegal procedure call on Heitmann...I could sense the offense was spent...then Rattay is sacked...argh! That was the beginning of the end. You could just sense it...

If I see one more run on second and ten, I am going to scream!!! NO, I take that back...I did scream! I noticed this tendency in the first half of the season. Then I read about it three weeks ago (the press printed it for all, even the stupidest defensive coordinators). Still, it continues. It is as if Greg Knapp is the only one who didn't read the article exposing his own short comings. I read the Neil Hayes column in the CC Times that TIM cited. Knapp's contract expires after the 49ers' final game this season. He best be concerned...if Mariucci makes the statement that he is taking over playcalling, Knapp's days as an NFL coordinator are shot. Its back to Sacramento State, where coincidentally, they are looking for a new head coach.

And, to think Knapp was the front office's choice to be our head coach if Mariucci had gone to Tampa Bay.

I have argued all along that Mariucci had run a better offense in his earlier days (undeniably with Steve Young and Jerry Rice). Maybe Marty Mornhinweg can be rehired by the 49ers if Detroit cans him.

The 49ers have been outscored 146-79 in the 4th quarter this year. The tendency is to blame the coaches, but what did this same team, with these same coaches do last year? I recall a lot of 4th quarter victories...

Make a note: I agree with TIM! The 49ers should have gone for the touchdown on 4th and one. However, I think Garrison Hearst got exposed last night, and I am not talking about the two fumbles. He hasn't been the same since he was asked to carry the load when Barlow got hurt. Last night he averaged only 3.5 yards a carry. I think you can go back the last four or five weeks and see that he consistantly gets stopped for two and three yard gains, particularly on "passing downs" like 2nd and 10. Is Barlow the answer? Two spectacular runs last night could not hide the fact that he was stopped for little or no gain several times. Again, I look at the line and wonder what is so special. Granted, there were a bunch of second and third stringers last night, but run blocking should be must at this level, against a weak Rams defense. I have said it before and I will say it again, I am not a Ben Lynch fan...the drop off in intensity between him and Newberry is embarrassing.

Plummer and Webster were both burned. Surprisingly, Rumph played error free. Go figure. I know there are a lot of Ahmed Plummer fans, and some of you think he should have been invited to the Pro Bowl, but he should be the #2CB. He isn't a superior athlete, like Deion Sanders, Charles Woodson, etc. He isn't fluid and lacks closing speed. That is draft speak for, "fi he makes a single mistake - one false step, turns the wrong way, slips - he gets burned. Webster's injury could be a disaster! He is listed as "questionable." What is Webster's contract status? Did he get an extension? He isn't "starting" quality. He should be a nickel back.

Chris McAllister will be tagged a "franchise player" by Baltimore, so he isn't an option (unless Mariucci is acquired by Detroit and the 49ers have 1st round picks to burn).

Tim Rattay looked good in the pocket for the first three quarters. Once he got blindsided by Little, he fell apart. As somebody said above, looks good, but lacks intangibles. I couldn't help but notice Rattay's average per completion (9.85) and per attempt (6.8) were better than Garcia's averages, despite being handicapped without Terrell Owens.

Where was Eric Johnson last night? I saw him on the field, but he didn't have a single catch.

Interesting sideline confrontation: "Mariucci had to separate defensive coordinator Jim Mora and special teams coach Bruce DeHaven." I think we all feel frustration with these terrible special teams. LaFleur is a bust, and that brings the front office scouting into question. Remember, these are the same guys who drafted Chandler even though he can't drive a kickoff past the 10 yard line.

Cedrick Wilson is not a return man. Punts and kickoffs were awful. Burned by an onside kick. Sorry Bruce...you are fired!

On the brighter side: We improved our draft position.
