He cast his eyes toward the darkening, swollen skies above. Sure enough, a storm was on the rise, and the wind was beginning to pick up. He was thankful he'd been roused, or he'd have been in for a cold and wet awakening.
The stranger's generosity both suprised and impressed him. He'd become accustomed to the attitudes of the big city dwellers...self-focused, hurried, and just...absent, it seemed. He considered the offer. It would probably be foolish, but he may learn something from this man about the woman he'd left behind if he did take him up on it. And if he gave a false name...no one would be the wiser, right? But he could not...would not...go into the club. He couldn't drop so selfishly into her life again. The anger, the hurt, the disappointment he most likely see in her eyes--well, he thought that would break him. Perhaps he deserved it, but she didn't. He opened his mouth to reply, but the next chain of events took the words right out of him.
The stranger's face took on a look that unnerved him greatly before suddenly lunging into the bar. Alarmed, he took a couple steps forward as if to follow. What could have happened? He hadn't heard anything besides music.
Suddenly, the memory of his nightmares of Angelina screaming overpower him, feeling much like a fist to the gut. He doesn't even stop to think--he just moves. His heart racing, he opens the door and steps over the threshold where the past meets the future. Full circle, everything the same.
By the time he has entered, the man he'd met out back was in the process of finishing with looked like two young guys--probably frat kids. He stops in his tracks, dark gaze shifting from the enraged male to the woman he was protecting. For an instant, he could have sworn she looked postively angellic, even distressed in the smokey barroom air. Seeing her again, no further than a room's length away, was like coming home.
His stomach sank as he realized the gravity of the situation he was now in. If she turned, she would see him and everything he had feared would come to pass. The dark haired man whose name he'd not caught had finished with the boys in a matter of seconds, and Angelina was focused on them. She was safe, and that was what mattered. And he go away with the comfort of knowing that she would always be safe, as long as she kept close to people like the stranger. Only a couple of feet from the exit, he turned for the door, hoping to slip back into the falling rain without detection.
____i will holler you home_____
