I have reviewed some of the messages posted to this site and I see a lot of references to Mr. Collins and his tough stance on crime. I think it is very inappropriate for Mr. Collins to continue to tout his record of long prison terms as evidence of his toughness on crime. I am familiar with the judicial system and I will tell you that it is not Mr. Collins that is tough on crime, it is the sitting judges we have in this county. Mr. Collins does not personally prosecute cases, he has a staff that does this. Mr. Collins very rarely makes an appearance in the courtroom and his staff very rarely goes to trial. Mr. Hennessy has finally brought some new ideas to this county and people should take notice. Crime is not going to be prosecuted differently and prison terms are not going to change because we the voters choose a new States Attorney, however what might change is that some kids out there might get the message that Mr. Hennessy is sending out and it might just change a kids life. What do we have to loose with some education and enlightenment for our youth in this county, because for sure Mr. Collins is not out there doing anything. Mr. Hennessy will restore some civility and personality and professionalism to the office of State's Attorney... a change this county needs!

You may not realize it, but it sounds like you are giving no credit to the hard working policeman of this county. They are doing a lot to prevent crime and your replies seem to indicate that there is not a whole lot of crime prevention going on right now.
In reference to Ms. Brookbank, the case was investigated for 20 months. What message do you think you are sending to the detectives who scrutinized all the people in the little boy's life and decided it was Ms. Brookbank who should be charged? They worked on this case for a long time before bringing it to court. Do you think they did a bad job on this case? Do you think the way to build rapport with the police force is to undermine their work and imply that they are not doing their jobs correctly?

So you are saying that if someone buys a ticket and attends Collins' fundraiser that is worse than working and taking financial assistance from a convicted FELON? That would be like holding the Redskins Organization responsible for a convicted FELON buying a ticket and coming in to attend a game. There is no control over who buys and sells a ticket. However when on the other hand if the CONVICTED GAS GUSLING FELON is working on the sidelines that's another story.

I am a working class woman and I am completely offended by this statement by you:
"I attended the meeting and found a number of working class people, primarily woman, supporting Ms. Brookbank. I was taken back by this because in my 29 years in criminal justice I have never seen so many people adamant about ones innocence. I was also taken back by the fact the group opened the meeting with a prayer for the victim and his family."
What you have here is a group of gossipy women who have nothing better to do with their time than to talk about others' misfortunes. As for the men who attend, I am sure the wives are bringing them along. Just because she has a lot of supporters, ALL COMPLETELY UNINFORMED AND UNITELLIGENT, is no reason to discard the trial, the verdict and the judge's sentence.
Unfortunately, for the real victim in this case, little Jack Sprague, these nuts have garnered a 'snowball effect'by spreading their lies throughout this small community. If you look deep enough you will find that there is a lot of hatred and jealously among the freedom4nancy supporters and this is their way of attacking the Spragues.
I strongly suggest you educate yourself and read the transcripts - even if you don't like Len Collins, he did the right thing! I only hope you can be trusted to do the same!!
As far as their hypocritical "prayer" for Jack - they should refrain from practicing the same type of hypocrisy you do. They should be praying that they all don't go straight to hell with Nancy. Their ridiculous "prayer" for Jack is unwanted by them; and you should realize that it is all for show - you know all about "show", don't you?

Have you considered asking the State's Attorneys office for a job as an assistant state's attorney so you could get some experience under your belt? Don't you think it would be wise to get your feet wet first?
Perhaps this is where you should have started your interest in prosecution instead of trying to start at the top.
You are not as prepared for that job as you would like to believe, or as prepared as you would like others to believe.
I know of very few who have started at the top. Experience counts and you have none in this particular arena.
You have never prosecuted a case and you definitely should have some experience before jumping into this head first.

Well Mr. Hennessy, I read your letter to the editor this morning and I am still shaking my head. You are asking your opponent to take the high road when you can't seem to get yourself off the low road.
It is obvious that you used the Marland Deen story to get your letter published but your letter had little to do with Mr. Deen (check out the letter policy in the paper). Instead, it was a feeble attempt to bash the current State's Attorney and cry "poor me".
Are you aware that the current State's Attorney did not write the article exposing your relationship with Marland Deen. I find it interesting that you condemn the paper for being bias. After all, your friend, convicted child abuser Nancy Brookbank has been benefiting from the papers slanted viewpoints for over a year now. Ms. Brookbank has not attempted to "make amends". When do you suppose she will "acknowledge culpability" and take responsibility for her actions, and more importantly, show some remorse for what she's done. Perhaps you can ask her that the next time you visit with her in prison.

Mr. Hennessy, have you recieved all the facts surrounding this case. I will assume that you have talked to the detectives who worked on this case and that you have read the transcripts and are fully informed on ALL the information regarding this child abuse case. Are you fully informed?
I am extremely bothered by your statement in the Maryland Independent where you stated "she should continue to fight for her innocence". What IS the message you are sending? Are you going to tell all victims of violent crime that you encourage their assailant to fight for their freedom at all cost? Won't you be re-victimizing them all over again? Don't you feel that victims of violent crime have suffered enough already? Are you for justice or are you for crime?

Mr. Collins has been a prosecutor for Charles County for nearly 23 years. Standing up for the rights of victims of some of the most henious crimes one can imagine. He has never used the office as a stepping stone to move onto other positions. He has been critized for being too tough. What is he supposed to be with murderers, rapist, kidnappers, bank robbers? It is directly because of Len Collins' leadership as the State's Attorney that has kept Charles County from becoming PG COUNTY! Who does not like Len Collins? CRIMINALS and CRIMINAL DEFESNSE ATTORNEY'S. The POLICE and VICTIMS of crimes need him and want him and his staff. When a criminal comes into court having spent some $200,000 and Mr Collins assigns a single attorney to prosecute the case and successfully convicts the criminal, I believe the citizens of Charles County have gotten their money's worth. I think the voters have to examine your support of the defense attorney's and convicted criminals and have to ask what does this guy OWE THESE PEOPLE IF ELECTED??? If you are going to side with the defense attorneys and criminals who will represent us the victims?

is offensive for so many reasons!
Please be careful what you mention on this website. There are citizens in this county who mourn for their loved ones, the deceased and the survivors of crime.
If you think a 30 year sentence was "getting off" you must think that your convicted child abuser friend got a "slap on the wrist" with her measely 5. She viciously took a life, but I guess no one really cares about the real victim in that case. How truly sad this has become!

It is apparent that you are supporting a convicted child abuser. What is also apparent is that you want the voters to "think" that you are not supporting a convicted child abuser. This way you can get votes from both sides of the community.
I would like answers to my questions regarding the victims of crime. What is your message to victims? You cannot be on the fence with issues such as these. You need to make a CLEAR statement of which side of the law you are fighting for...victims or defendants? It cannot be both!

I have read, with total disbelief, about the support and encouragement you give Nancy Brookbank. WHY ARE YOU HELPING HER? In case you missed the newspapers the entire last year, this sick woman was found GUILTY GUILTY GUILTY of child abuse. I have several grandchildren of my own and it sickens me to read of the horror this little boy must be experiencing, not to mention his poor parents.
I hate to be the one to bring this to your attention, but, the State's Attorney IS on the side of the VICTIM! Do you have a complete understanding of this concept? The VICTIM is the one you need to protect and serve! Defendants like Nancy Brookbank pay someone like you to serve them. Do you understand that, if elected, you will no longer be a defense attorney?

I think the combination of Mr. Hennessy's experience and his obvious interest in the community really set him apart from Charles County's State's Attorney's status quo. As a young DC Police Officer just out of the academy in 1991, I was Assigned to the First Police District (1D). 1D covered areas of Northwest, to Southwest water front and Capitol Hill. Mixed up in these areas were plenty of low income housing projects with plenty of crime.... On slow nights I would here "Crusier 910 I'm behind a stolen vehicle". In this police crusier was Capt. Lou Hennessy. My adreniline would rise and a slow night would turn into an arrest for Unathurized Use of Vehicle (UUV). A criminal would go to jail and a victim of a stolen car would get there car back. The first night I saw Capt. Hennessy I thought "this is a Captain, Captains dont go out and get involved like this". Man I thought this guy isn't affaid of anybody or anything. Capt. Hennessy then went on to command our Homicide Unit with nothing but high praise from his Detectives.
Iam a Charles County resident and will not only vote for Mr. Hennessy but will stand at the polls and encourage other residents to do the same.
