Just to add to the controversy - this is getting good ! - if you navigate cross channel with a GPS waypoint feeding the A/helm the boat will spend a lot of time chasing the tide. Might not bother our motorist friends but will add a fair bit of time to a typical Solent - Cherbourg passage under sail. My preferred method is work out a course to steer, then let A/helm get on with it
