Colum, there are others far more qualified than I to answer this question. I just want to say that you can do no wrong with a Yanmar, I have been satisfied with the two that I had, workhorses that will go on and on. I just found that the 8HP was not up to pushing the T500 in the severe conditions I sometimes found myself in. I nearly changed it for a Volvo Penta but, like you, it wouldn't fit and so I opted for the 2GM20 and now I know, from those that know more than I and from the superb performance and reliability that I have had, that is was the better choice.
You should measure your engine compartment and check out what is available and what the dimensions are - including necessary things such as cooling and exhaust, controls and transmission.
