Thanks Kim,
I have been biting my fingernails for a couple of years about doing this job but decided that it couldn't be worse than hearing a big bang and losing the keel (I know in theory that probably wouldn't happen, but it isn't worth the dubious honour of being the first TS240 owner able to say "well, who would have thought!). The old box looked like something dredged up from the Titanic and was rapidly turning into breakfast cereal so it was time to bite the bullet.
The new box is being fabricated at a local engineering works and they are also drilling and tapping 3 new keel bolt holes in the keel casting beside the bolts that sheared off during removal. I was advised that this was probably the easier option to removing the old ones. The hardest part has probably been moving the keel around with only brute force and enthusiasm. As you know, it is VERY heavy, over half a ton.
Anyway thanks for the wiring advice (next job, along with new rudder stock).
Most TS240 owners sound like they are along the south coast but if there are any up here in't frozen North (Lake District) I would be pleased to hear from them.
