Subject: Revenge of the Sith - something of a review, (and beware of some spoilers).

Saw this last night and I'm still undecided about it. But breaking it down:

Positives ~
* Hayden Christiansen's much better in this one, playing the character in a more understated fashion. He also seems to have added considerable bulk.
* Lucas has finally realized that the story doesn't have to (also) revolve around C3P0 and R2D2, who are relegated to the background, (although R2D2 has a pretty bright opening).
* Jar Jar Binks is relegated to a non-speaking cameo or two.
* Ian McDiarmid as the Emperor - he should win an Oscar.
* the action scenes.

Negatives ~
* after Obi-Wan Kenobi had the crap beaten out of him in Clones, my cousin and I joked that he'd been demoted to the midcard. It continues to apply for half a movie. Also, Ewan McGregor seems to have decided to play Obi-Wan as Roger Moore played James Bond.
* Samuel L. Jackson continues to remain something of a misfit, (well, that's the way I've always seen his presence in these movies - and he doesn't drop his prized motherf--ker once!).
* some rewriting of the prophecy - it's now been added that Anakin won't only bring balance to the force (as the other two prequels espoused) but that he'll destroy the Sith.
* the storyline's very underdone.

If Lucas got rid of Phantom Crapulence (which is pretty redundant), and split this movie into two and explored the story aspects in their own full-length features, then he might've had something. As it is, it all seems a bit too expedient.

It's actually one thing which pisses me off about Lucas; he claims he was waiting for technology to catch up before he attempted the prequel-series - okay, fine. But that doesn't mean he couldn't have written the story and worked on them to iron out all the inks in the twenty years since Jedi was completed.

Anyway, I liked sith, it was good, but I don't believe it's the home run everybody expected to make the entire prequel-series worthwhile.
