I saw it tonight.

You know, there are some movies whih should be easy, but which the filmmakers still manage to screw up. Case in point: Aliens vs Predator. All that movie needed was one kickass scene of an Alien and a Predator duking it out, and all the other stupidity wouldn't have mattered.

Which brings me back to Revenge of the Sith. The money shot in this film is of course, the emergence of Darth Vader in the black armor. At first, it seemed like Lucas nailed it. Anakin, burned beyond recognition and nearly limbless, strapped to a table as droids perform sinister looking surgery on him. The mask is strapped on, and suddenly we hear the sound of his breathing. It's a total "Oh f**k yeah!" moment.

But then Lucas botches it just moments later, when Vader, looking absurdly like Peter Boyle in Young Frankenstein, rises from the table after hearing of Padme's death, stumbles around like a newborn giraffe, and lets loose with just about the worst "NNNNNOOOOOOOOO!!!!" ever captured on film.

Any possible pathos or dramatic impact in that scene was washed away in the embarrased groans and laughter of the audience. I even saw kids mocking the moment after the film, doing their own stumbling, bumbling Vader impersonation in the lobby.

Lucas just has no freaking clue anymore.
