The first thing Rowan did was drag Jeremy back to his room.

“Put your clothes on,” he said, shoving him in and shutting the door behind them. As Jeremy complied, Rowan watched with a disapproving eye, his hands folded over his chest until the boy was completely dressed.

“You do realize you’re a complete idiot, huh?” he asked, uncrossing his arms and pacing slowly about the room. “Why can’t you understand what I was trying to tell you, Jeremy?” He stopped and turned to him, spreading his hands with an imploring look. “Love is not lust. And I know you still thought you were in love with Marz, and maybe still do. Whatever the case, you sure as hell can’t convince someone to feel the same way about you, no matter what you do.

“You set yourself up for disappointment,” he continued, pointing his finger at him, “And it’s your own damned fault that things happened the way they did. You’re just lucky the crazy son of a bitch didn’t kill you.” He sighed and moved closer to him, placing a hand on his shoulder and squeezing it lightly. “Gods, kid…don’t be so stupid, okay? Next time you come to me for advice, try and listen, all right?”

He turned away from him, shaking his head in disappointment. “Whatever.” He threw one hand up at the air as though giving up, and moved to open the door with the other. “Let’s just go get something to eat. I’m famished.”

They both trooped downstairs and returned to the dining room, just in time for Rowan to catch Corum giving Tia a kiss. He pointedly ignored the two, walking around the table to sit next to his sister---but alas, she was cornered on both sides. Since he figured Erlic probably hated him, he sat down next to Ravin instead, waving to the thief and giving him a tired smile, but saying nothing, as Laurel was in the process of telling him something about druids.

“…as I was saying before Erlic arrived and rudely interrupted,” she paused and gave the older thief a playful grin, “I think there are a lot of misconceptions that people have concerning druids. While it’s true…hello, Rowan.” She smiled at him, and he nodded back, before laying his head on the table. “While it’s true,” she continued, right where she’d left off, “I suppose, that I do have a certain love for nature, it doesn’t mean I am perfectly willing to give up the comforts of a proper home and good society. I should think…” she paused, tiling her head as though trying to envision something, “I should think that my…idea of a perfect home would be the one I had as a girl.”

Don’t talk about back then, he wanted to say, but he just sighed and closed his eyes.

“We---Rowan and I---lived at our father’s manor, Devonshir, but it was a country home, several miles from the closest village. Well…I don’t suppose you might consider a five-story house to be a “country” dwelling, but you know what I mean. But nearby there was a forest, a beautiful forest, really, and my mother and I, sometimes with our other friends, would take the horses and our falcons and go hunting all morning and afternoon. I learned to love the wild things like that, and thus our parents learned of my affinity toward earth magic while I was still quite young. I learned to speak to the falcons and direct their flight before I’d even been enrolled at the School for Earth Magic in Little Haven.”

She laughed lightly, and Rowan opened his eyes slightly, watching as she took a sip from her wine. “I am sure that’s more than you wanted to know,” she said, looking at Ravin and rolling her eyes slightly. “I do tend to let my mouth run at the most in opportune times. And so now you must tell me about what it means to be a thief.” She took a bite from her sandwich, swallowing quickly before nudging Erlic. “And you must tell me twice as much as you might plan to, so that you may make up for our dear Erlic’s usual silence, you know.”

Rowan finally lifted his head, forgetting his slight depression for a moment as he listened intently for Ravin to begin describing his life and exploits as a thief.
