The most hallowed sports in big-time college athletics have glaring academic deficiencies....

Nationally, 30 percent of football teams and 20 percent of men's basketball programs in Division I fell below the minimum standard of academic progress in the 2003-04 academic year. Overall, nearly half (49.5 percent) of Division I schools would have had at least one team subject to penalties under guidelines that will go into effect in 2006....

Penalties begin with a loss of scholarships. Repeat offenders could face postseason bans and, in the extreme, expulsion from the NCAA.

Under the new guidelines, each team in Division I must maintain an APR [academic progress rate] score of 925 out of a possible 1,000. The 925 equates to a graduation rate of 50 percent. Teams lose points for athletes who transfer, drop out or turn pro. A team with a score below 925 is subject to penalties, but only if the departing athletes are academically ineligible.

Locally, Fordham had an overall APR of 977, Manhattan 959, Hofstra 958, LIU 957, St. John's 954, St. Francis 952 and Stony Brook 929.

Key stat will be APR
Newsday

FYI, Fordham's APR of 977 ranks #39 nationally (out of 328 Division I schools).
