I'd be careful about using RealPlayer - as you say it seems to be designed to find any weakness in your PC or system. Again it's a bit of a mystery why the BBC used RealPlayer rather than MediaPlayer or just making it available in a general format. I use an ADSL connection but the reception is still poor compared with the satellite.

I don't agree with you about finding alternatives - Radio 3 is in a class of it's own in both range and standard of the music played. That said Radio 4 is essential for language based programmes.
