I've got a question and would like some feedback. I'm getting kind of itchy to do some changes around here...........specifically, window coverings. The problem is, I am so NOT a fan of normal drapes, curtains, mini-blinds or vertical blinds. Example: for years, on my kitchen window (which only needs the bottom half covered for privacy purposes) I've used cute, quilted pillow shams clipped to curtain rings and hung from a pole. In the living room and bedroom, I've used cute quilts clipped (again) to drapery rings. It works great for privacy and also light and climate control. I'm thinking about doing something different in the living room and our bedroom - - - - - - but I don't know what!! I do watch a lot of HGTV (Designed to Sell, Design on a Dime, etc.) for ideas but was wondering what everyone here uses for their windows ......... and I hate the term "window fashions." -- Piggy's Pad

In a perfect world, I'd live in the country and would be able to have my windows bare. Yup, buck naked. I love, and live with, the country look. But an example of what I DON'T want is: several years ago, I was in a house that was in a rural area. The house sat far enough "up" from the road that someone passing by would not be able to see in. And what did these people have in their windows!!! ???? Very, VERY heavy draperies that were snagged from their cats and, if truth be told, made their living room and dining room look like a mortuary!! Uh, we're still alive and well here. I'm not a window covering fan either. On our sunporch I put wood blinds cause I can shove them way up but close them at night. It's 8 windows and I didn't want drapes. My dining room has the same thing with a topper, it's a southern exposure so I had to have something that blocked the sun well in the summer. My living room is a bow window but I only have a valance. We have so little traffic and I don't tend to run around naked so...I have tried covering that window and just hate the light it blocks. I have curtains in my bedroom but the spare room is a valance and shade (It's Goldies room and she lives in the window and I don't need to clean hairy curtains. I'm lazier now ! I've lived in places where I've done what you have, the curtain rings clipped to something other than curtains. I found cloth napkins once that matched placemats and used them for a valance. The blinds are nice but awful to keep clean too but cloth gets hairy and snagged...all this and didn't give you any ideas! LOL (NT) -- D, 3:16:51 pm, Wed, 11/07/07
Heck, Denise, we've even thought about the wood or faux wood blinds. The problem is that our living room and bedroom windows are doubles. To get that width is horribly expensive and also heavy. I've been using the quilts and shams because they were pretty, fairly inexpensive and very easy to toss in the washer when the edges became cathairlogged from the kitties poking their faces around the edges. Not cheap but Leon always wanted the wood blinds and we were spending so much money at the time for the room itself that we thought 'what the heck'! I also wouldn't have regular blinds, I found these cordless blinds cause I knew some of the cats were prone to chew on the cords. If we could just do awya with dust it would help! Crystal, I'd love to see your pictures. There's a house in our neighborhood that has shutters on the lower half of the windows only, like you, but they have a valance. To me, in my house, at least, that's just another term for a dust-catcher. I love to have the windows open and the whole house fan on but it does tend to make things a bit dusty. I've given shutters a good deal of thought because they're pretty much indestructible with cats. Sorry, I'm not much help here. I HAVE to have window coverings, and they have to be dog and cat proof. We have vertical blinds.... I don't like them, but they are the most practical and not prone to as much damage as other stuff. The cats would climb/destroy curtains.... and I already know they will destroy horizontal blinds. I'd actually love to have our windows with no curtains or blinds too, but where we live that is an impossible idea!!
afraid I'm not much help either...I've got tied-back curtains, with toppers and blinds here.....I'm real happy with them....
