Would anyone like a small bit of *good* news? I just happened to be in the basement last night as Snowy decided to use the litter box. It was loose and stinky and I was thinking "Oh, no, the medication didn't take care of the giardia! Now what do we do?" But while holding my nose and trying to keep from gagging, I scooped it up and double baggied his little treasure. I let Gerry know that he was going to have to make a stop at the vet's office today but he said he couldn't do it until lunchtime. OMG!! Keeping something that stinky in the car, with the heat and humidity, for 5 hours???? We'll never get the smell out of the car. Anyway.......the good news! Snowy's tests came back clean. He's cured!! Since his poopie was runny, the vet did run some other tests besides just the giardia but there's nothing there. No more getting my hands punctured by trying to pill 5 cats and no more rubbing ointment on ear flaps. -- Piggy's Pad

Can you say *Happy Dancing* here??? The car still smells a bit rank (and I had that sample in four different graduated sizes of baggie) but I think I'll wait 'til the weekend, go out and take a sniff and if needed, I'll spend some time spraying the car with Febreze. Sandy, not to rain on your parade.... but Giardia often tests negative till it gets so bad it finally tests positive. Also, keeping it in the car in the heat probably ruined the sample. Your best bet is FRESH, and if you can't immediately go to the vet with a sample, you have to keep it refrigerated. That being said tho, here's hoping for solid BMs from now on for Snowy! Oh, darn it all anyway! Our vet never said that it had to be refrigerated and he knew, when Gerry dropped the sample off, that Snowy had pooped it last night. Would it test negative even if the previous test was positive? But hey, you're not raining on my parade..........I appreciate your educating me, especially since my vet isn't doing such a good job. If he's been on meds and it's cleared up most of the infection, then yes, he can test negative. Every vet I've ever had has told me stool samples have to be fresh or kept refrigerated. If left in room temp or heat for even an hour, the nasties in the sample can not show up for tests. If you continue to have runny poops, I'd see about having another sample tested. Even if refrigerated, try not to let the sample be more than 24 hours old. I've also been told Giardia is hard to catch until it gets pretty bad.... A dog or cat can test negative multiple times before a positive pops up. Usually I just go ahead and treat with Flagyl anyway, as it has stuff in it to firm the bowels back up. I didn't realize you could refrigerate a poop sample..I knew it had to be fresh...
our Vet always told us as long as it didn't get "hard" they could still test it....sometime (especially with Maggie) I will get the sample the night before the office visit, I always tell Dr. Lee this and she never seems concerned.... (NT) -- Kate, 8:08:13 pm, Thu, 07/12/07
