Subject: Fan Fiction

Fanfiction has been, and still is, a large part of our JAG-verse. Many of us have been reading and writing, have enjoyed the additional entertainment that fanfiction provides. Sadly our fandom has been thinning out, with many writers no longer adding stories to the world of JAG. However, writing fanfiction can be addictive (it is to me). So is reading, being able to tap into so much raw talent once you find it (I love it!). So I am immensely curious to hear from you and discuss:

We had so many very talented writers that have disappeared by now. Dear readers, have you looked around, been able to find them writing for other fandoms? Have you followed some to whatever they write because they were good, or are you not interested when it isn't JAG?

Have you started following other fandoms because you love the shows, and have discovered a new addiction, if you will? Or was it only JAG for you, and there is less interest in fanfiction because you are no longer as involved in any other show? Do you still hunt on the internet, trying to unearth another JAG story treasure that you may not have read before?

Do any of you who hang around here write for different fandoms? Have you written for a mix of fandoms even before or has it always just been JAG?

Discuss! :-) Oh and feel free to add any other questions that you might be curious about.

[> JAG is my one and only fandom. Don't remember how I found this on the internet but I do remember being intrigued with fan fiction. JAG is all I've read. I got "sucked" into writing through challenges. One just inspired me and then I was hooked. I still write, still wake up with a new idea, I have a folder full of unfinished things. My problem is lack of time to complete them. Why JAG? -- usmgrad, 20:48:08 11/16/11 Wed [1]

It was different, I became familiar with the characters, their history. I must admit the internet and all the websites while the show was on the air helped to fill in the blanks. Also other writers inspired me. I still read and reread stories, the author of choice depends on my mood. I do miss sites that have disappeared, wishing I could have saved stories that are now gone. There has been no other show that has intrigued me or inspired me like JAG, I don't think there ever will be.

[> [> Thanks usmgrad! Until not too long ago, I only read JAG as well (now I'm also hooked on Castle). I came across it when I wanted to find out the outcome after A Tangled Webb I, and I was intrigued immediately. Started writing soon after, and it was my first foray into writing anything. And the more I knew about the characters, the more ideas and plot bunnies I had. I feel like Harm and Mac still live in my head, being so familiar with their story. -- Colie, 13:03:18 11/17/11 Thu [1]

[> Fanfiction (Inside; wordy and a question) -- Shelly, 22:58:36 11/16/11 Wed [1]

(major lurker alert*)It's such a happy coincidence that I saw your post immediately after reading your Castle fanfic over at ff.net. :-)

I love to read. Writing of all kinds has always appealed to me and fanfiction is an addictive pool of awesomeness that drew me in from the early years of the internet. The best part about ff, to me, is that there is no need to take the time to explain the very basic structure (in terms of characters, setting, etc). It's all about exploring the nooks and crannies that the show was unable to delve into, the whys and the hows of certain actions in the plot that we did not get to see on screen. So, it is as much about filling in the gaps in the show's narrative, as it is about the show.

I've long been a reader of fanfiction and the addiction started with a combination of JAG and The X-Files, back when Ex Libris, the Rose Garden and Gossamer were busy. And I still keep in touch with my "original" fandom loves to an extent (re-reading my old faves), but my instinct, as far as obsessing over fanfiction, it seems, is to move on to newer pastures. I think that's also because I've read enough fanfiction, in my old fandoms, that gives the characters the closure, the ending, or the "ever after" that I was seeking at the end of a show that I feel comfortable enough to leave them. lol...that sounds a lot more egotistical than I meant.

I have come across some of my favorite fanfic authors from one fandom in other fandoms and it's like reconnecting with a long lost friend - it's fun, and rather comforting to see that and read their interpretation of this new fandom, see what fascinates them about this new world and new set of characters.

I do have a question for the fic writers who straddle different fandoms - how easy/difficult is it to write fic for different shows?
If you start writing for one show, are you able to go back to an old favorite to write fic for that?

[> [> Awww, thanks for the advertisement, Shelly. :-) Glad to hear you are reading. Great analysis! I totally agree with what you said about the appeal of fanfiction. It's like the dream of the Neverending Story, a world where you can keep your favorite characters and every time you open the book, there is a new story told, another angle explored. I am often sad if I have just finished a very good book, and have to close it and there is no more. With fanfiction, there's always more! Are there other JAG fanfic authors that you have found in new fandoms, and if so, who are they? -- Colie, 13:10:17 11/17/11 Thu [1]

[ Edit | View ]

[> [> To answer your question about straddling fandoms, here's my take (even if I only just started in a new fandom with a mere two stories under my belt): I am not having a difficult time with switching between shows. It's like the characters have their own places in my head that don't mix. Here live Castle and Beckett, and over there live Mac and Harm. They don't mingle. If a story idea comes to my mind for Castle, it usually isn't one that would fit for JAG at all. (inside) -- Colie, 14:04:50 11/17/11 Thu [1]

I haven't written for JAG in a while, but that's more so because I am less involved in it - I can't watch it right now (no DVDs and it's not on tv right now either), and so there is less inspiration. With Castle there are current, new episodes and 'unfinished' characters and storylines so I find myself more inspired. However, I still have Harm and Mac ideas in my head, as well as unfinished projects, and I am aiming to go back at some point, whenever inspiration strikes. Which I think will happen once I have the DVD set and will rewatch the entire series.

[> [> [> Off the top of my head, apart from you obvs, one of my favorite JAG ff writers, Pixie, writes Bones fanfiction and I was beyond elated to discover her writing there, but unfortunately, I've moved on from the Bones fandom into Castle now...*wink, wink, nudge, nudge* do write a few multi-chapter fics for Castle, please? Thanks for answering the question - I guess that's how I operate as a reader too - and the paucity of new episodes is definitely a big drawback sometimes. I like seeing the characters (and the fandom) grow through the seasons. It just feels very satisfying. -- Shelly, 20:37:14 11/17/11 Thu [1]

[> [> [> [> True, Pixie has been writing across fandoms for a while. I don't read Bones fanfic though. But yeah would love to do a multi-chapter Castle piece. However, I am better at writing than at coming up with plots. You can throw some plot bunnies my way if you have any ideas and I can see what I can do. ;-) -- Colie, 21:26:59 11/17/11 Thu [1]

[> I have written mostly JAG, I cant say I havent gotten any ideas for Bones, but usually when I think of a story line it is usually a cross over with JAG. Harm and Mac have inspired me most, they are the reason I started writing. I have followed Army Wives, Bones and Castle fandoms, but only as a lurker. I havent posted anything. When I miss JAG and all the characters I grew to love, there is alot of fanfiction out there, I still reread the oldies but goodies. ;) -- mkim My life has made me slow down writing, chemo messes with brain cells, I get a short story or two out a year, if I'm lucky, 23:39:20 11/16/11 Wed [1]

[> I love to read fanfiction. I love reading in general, though I really do not like writing. Like Shelly, I started out with the X-files, discovered JAG after that. I used to read Bones ff, but have lost interest there, and am now reading mainly Castle ff. I love them and feel they've really helped to flesh out so many scenes we didn't get to see and what could have happened, should have happened, and would've been BETTER to happen in the way the talented writers come up with. I've written a few of my own, but lately, with not being able to watch anymore on TV here (we don't get the channel anymore :( and we don't have a DVD player :(, I've lost my 'muse'. I STILL read, though! :) -- mj, 06:38:59 11/17/11 Thu [1]

[> I have written for 2 other shows and it wasnt too hard. I have tons of my JAG FanFic out there and I would like to finish a few things that I never got around to. I now read House, SMK, NCIS, Hart to Hart and Battlestar Galactica fics plus a few othere here and there but as much as you can find to read finding quailty like some of the old JAG writers is hard. The writers I do like usually have serveral fandoms that they write for. -- DOS, The Hart to Hart fan sites are few and there are a few good stories., 09:35:01 11/17/11 Thu [1]

[> One other thing - Canon vs Fanon? What is real from the show and what did some writer post that has become something nearly every writter at sometime has put in a story? Plus how many twins can a woman have and why does the childrens names always end up the real people playing them, some other big character or after the parents? Cant say I am innocent but after awhile I have worked on getting as far as I can from naming the children Harm, Sara, Matt, AJ, Frank, David, Catherine, Tom or Patrica. -- DOS, 09:43:40 11/17/11 Thu [1]

[> [> There are definitely some 'established' ideas in the JAG-verse that have become so common in many stories - but are mostly fanon, were never really on the show as such. For example, Harm being a vegetarian. I think it derived from the 'meatless meatloaf' comment he made once - but just because someone eats something meatless once does not a vegetarian make. Yet in fanfiction he is made to be a vegetarian most of the time. And he is the one who is the good cook, whereas Mac supposedly can't or doesn't cook at all. Which was never said on the show as such. -- Colie, 17:45:14 11/17/11 Thu [1]

[> Well, I use to spend so much time reading fanfic, but I just don't seem to have the time anymore. I don't know what happened. I watch more TV shows than I used to, and now I'm on Facebook, so maybe that's the problem. I don't think I've read anything in the past couple of years. Inside -- JAG Junkie (Ronda), 13:41:16 11/18/11 Fri [1]

I've read a ton of JAG fanfic, although there is so much out there that I'm sure there are plenty of good stories that I never read. I hit most of the "big" authors, though.

The majority of the fanfic I have read has been JAG, although I did spend a long period reading lots of Scarecrow and Mrs King fanfic. I also read a little bit of Remington Steele and Lois & Clark. I remember discovering lots of fanfic about "The Nanny", and intending to read some of it one day, and never getting around to it. If I had more time now I'm sure I would read fanfic about Chuck, Bones, and especially Castle. Sigh. Maybe one day I'll figure out a way to squeeze fanfic back in my schedule.

As for writing, I haven't done that in years. No time and no inspiration. A few years ago, I did have a lot of good ideas for expanding and enhancing one of my longer stories, and I even started working on the rewrite, but then life got in the way and I put it aside and never got back to it. Unfortunately, I've forgotten some of the great dialogue I had come up with. I should have scribbled it down when it came to me, but inspiration never seemed to strike when it was convenient to jot something down. :-(

I'm sure I'm missing some great stories by some of our great writers who are still writing. I just need more hours in my day! Sigh.

[> [> I just thought of another reason I have no spare time anymore. I discovered Netflix and a whole world of wonderful old movies that I had either forgotten or never seen to begin with. THAT is my biggest time user. Instead of reading about Harm and Mac, I've been watching Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, and Cary Grant. -- JJ (Ronda)--one day I'll run out of old movies to watch, so maybe then I can get back to fanfic., 13:57:05 11/18/11 Fri [1]

[> [> [> About Netflix--inside 'cause it's OT -- JJ (Ronda), 20:10:05 11/18/11 Fri [1]

FYI--If you want to see old movies with Netflix, you're better off doing DVDs by mail rather than streaming. MUCH bigger selection that way. Out of the 100 or so movies that are currently in my queue, only about 25 are available to be streamed. That's why I dropped streaming altogether and saved $2.00 per month.
