This isn't exactly entertainment, but I didn't know where else to post this -- this is for all lovers of politics (non-partisan), the USA, and history in the making and if you want to try to be a part of it!! inside -- mj, 08:47:18 09/05/08 Fri [7]
My daughter got a little 'inside' announcement that John McCain and Barack Obama will be attending TOGETHER the ServiceNation Presidential Candidates Forum at Columbia University in NYC on September 11. It will be held in the Alfred Lerner Hall. This, of course, is a special remembrance day and this presentation will NOT be a presidential debate. I think it will be open to the public, I'm not sure, but if anyone is interested, you can call Columbia University's Events Office.

  - Yes, Cece, it's a special 9/11 remembrance forum. My daughter , who's studying at Columbia, is in Zimbabwe at the moment for a sememster abroad and is SO disappointed she will miss this.   - I really dont know how I feel about that, Army Gal. I have loved Katherine Fugate's 'heart' for the real Army wives. I remember Joan of Arcadia, and in the begiinning it was a very intriguing show, then as it began to get 'preachy' I just lost interest. Beside the fact that Joan was such a brat most of the time, I couldnt stand her. I dont want to be lectured or preached to about how I should feel, I just want to see the story unfol where it will and decide for myself. I'm with holding judgement until I see more. I guess it's just one of those things where the writers are told they need to break them apart, but they can't quite figure out how to do it because it seems silly to do it in the first place. - First let me say that I missed Zack. Now then, loved Booth's descritpion of breakfast at the Beefeater, his reaction to the wig (sounds like Bud), his James Bond gun and the glad we had a revolution. As always, great humor. The bridge rising scene cracked me up and the parking of the little car. I always love the moments between Bones and Booth. I really can't figure out why the sudden break-up of Angela and Hodge...makes no sense to me. Did anyone else have trouble understanding the actor who played Wexler?   - I agree about Wexler. I loved his accent, but it was hard to understand him sometimes. I hit the rewind button a LOT last night. Funny, I do the same thing when I watch Hugh Grant movies, but I digress...Anyway, that Wexler guy was cute, but I just don't see the massive appeal that was supposed to be there. - I´m glad Bones is back, but to be honest, I didn´t like this episode all that much. The case didn´t really grip me, things back at the Jeffersonian were way too "dramatic". And Booth, especially at the beginning, just came across as rather dim witted, arrogant and gun crazy. It was just too much, and too cliche. But then again, I didn´t find that bathtub scene last season all that funny either, so maybe it´s just not my kind of humor. I loved Pritchard, though, and the dynamic she created. - I didn’t care for the first case seemed almost too easy and not very interesting. Agree Booth was a little to cliché. Missed everyone being together. Loved the guy who quit he was funny always feeling so uncomfortable. The whole break up was contrived. I just thought H felt why would A choose him over Grayson not that he couldn’t trust her.   - I didnt really like the epi either but was afraid to say anything....it was too goofy and made Americans look really stupid in the beginning. I didnt find the case all that interesting and I really didnt like Cam just sleeping with A's ex without thinking of how A would feel....just all too jumbled and goofy.   - Re: Angela's reaction to Cam sleeping with Grayson. I figured that once A found out, she and Cam would indulge in girl talk about their experiences. I was a little surprised that it bothered her. So I can understand why Hodgins was upset that it bothered her and I don't blame him for wanting the guy to leave. After all, Grayson was the reason they weren't married yet.     - I am guessing we are to infer she wasn't so sure about what she felt for H after seeing her ex and so used his wanting him gone to end it. Maybe the thought that the marriage could actually happen now scared her. Who know guess we will see in the coming weeks. - I didn't hate the episode However, it was so cheesy. Booth was over the top with his misunderstandings and bad pronunciations. It was as if he'd never been to the UK before, and was unclear on the concept of countries outside of the US. The upper class Brits were rediculously cliche. Also, the roads would have been packed with cars, so Booth wouldn't have the opportunity to drive on the wrong side. I'm worried that "Bones" is getting desperate with this "on the road" episode.   - I agree with you Cece. I found myself waiting for the show to be over so I could change the channell. I was disappointed that this was the season opening episode. The story was completely transparent and predicatable. My daughter and I figured it out from the minute the Butler answered the door. I am mourning the last of the new For Better or for Worse comic strip. I have followed it for years and read every day to see what everyone was up to next. - Yes, I have always read it, too. I was surprised by the "ending" of an era in Sunday's paper. But it looks like she's going back and "starting over" - maybe she's recreating the family for *this* generation, taking new paths with the characters, finding new outcomes, etc. It'll be interesting, that's for sure. Don't know how many of you are aware of Nicole Kidman's upcoming project, "Australia", but it's been in production for over a year and is set for release in mid November. Here's a link to watch the trailer...

It's another Baz Luhrman project, too, so it will be richly set and visually stunning. I'm looking forward to it and hope it does well. Nicole's had some tough times at the box office lately.

Actor Jeff MacKay died of liver failure at age 60. Mr. MacKay was best known for his role as Lt. Mac Reynolds on "Magnum P.I." He also had recurring roles on "JAG" and "Tales of the Gold Monkey." Mr. MacKay's many film and TV credits include "Diagnosis Murder," "Kung Fu: The
Legend Continues," "Frame Up," "Hardcastle and McCormick," "Airwolf," "The Greatest American Hero," "The Wild Wild
West Revisited," "Battlestar Galactica," "Baa Baa Black Sheep," "The Krofft Supershow" and "All the President's Men." Mr. MacKay was the cousin of "All the President's Men" star Robert Redford.

I was so shocked by this , that I went to the IMDB site to see if it had been updated (guess I was hoping it was a mistake) and it shows his birthdate as October 20, 1948, so he actually didn't quite make 60. I know how wonderful it is to see DJE star in all these productions. Even though his movies haven't hit the airways, it is meaningful that he is working. BUT, I sure do miss him, for the third year in a row, not being in a weekly series. I hope he comes back soon. Hi to all Canadian JAG Fan - well it seems we have seen the last of JAG on History Television. Friday Aug. 29th, 2008 as canj has mentioned on the MB, FW&FS, the series finale was shown and when I went to check the schedule for next week, it is being replaced by MASH. We sure had a good run, they have been showing it since Jan. 2004 with no cut scenes.     - Canada's History Channel is not just about Canada's history, or even Canada's place in history. It features historical world events, though it does tend to focus on Canada's part, if applicable. It also showed The Untouchables, and other history style tv shows and movies. If there are any Stargate Atlantis fans out there. There wont be a season 6. Word came down today that the series has been canceled. I myself am not surpirised as they have really hacked this show to pieces and they royally pissed off the fans with the way they departed Sam. Sure everyone knew Amanda wouldnt be back due to her own series, Sanctuary being picked up by Sci-Fi, but they could have managed Sam's exit with a little more tact than they did.

I'm looking forward to Sanctuary but Atlantis doesnt hold my interest. I must not be the only one.

        I'm there with you on your Ausiello opinion,.,lol, but this comment was from and Army Wives source who works there so that makes me feel better. I really don't think Lifetime/ABC will do anything to mess with there number 1 show of all time and the highest rated show on cable, at least I would think that they wouldn't. Katherine Fugate left them with a great recipe and I think they'll do well by it.         I agree about the compromise. There are people like the 'aggressive' reporter, I think the point should have been, what she suggested wasnt 'play' at all. Unfaithful is unfaithful, whether youre gay or straight. It's wrong. It was gross 'oh, my husband doesnt mind' ICK! This wasnt a gay/ lesbian issue, it was a gratuitous sex issue. I dont like users, no matter their sexual orientation & that's what this reporter seemed to me.. About the 'good ole boy military type' taking over the show, Please...this is Hollywood, right?? "Music and Lyrics" movie -- JAG Junkie (Ronda), 15:37:17 08/10/08 Sun [20]

I recently discovered a gem of a movie, "Music and Lyrics", and I just have to share! It came out a couple of years ago, but I honestly had never even heard about it until it came up as one of my recommendations in my Netflix account. It sounded cute, and I'm a sucker for romantic comedies, so I gave it a try and I'm SOOO glad I did!

It stars Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore, and I'm not a big fan of either, but they were both great in this movie. I love quick banter and this movie was full of it. I thought it was hilarious!

Basically, it's about an 80's pop star has-been (think Andrew Ridgeley of Wham!--you know, the *other* guy who basically disappeared) who has just been asked to write a song for a Britney-Spears-like teen pop star, which could be the big break he needs to make a comeback. Trouble is, he writes music, not lyrics. He tries to find a lyricist, but it turns out that the person (DB) filling in for his plant lady comes up with better lyrics than the professional, so he begs her to help him write the song. I know it sounds cheesy, but it really is a funny, romantic, sweet movie. It's not a musical per se, but the music does play a centrol role and many of the songs are quite memorable. HG does all his own singing and dancing, and he's surprisingly good!

But the best parts of the movie are the opening and closing credits. It opens with a totally 80's video of his group's biggest hit song. You can tell that they spent a lot of time watching old Duran Duran videos when they put this together--it's a riot! I nearly died laughing! The hair, the clothes, the shots of the band mixed with a cheesy storyline that's badly overacted: it's 80's to the max! And then, during the closing credits they show the video again, but in the VH-1 "Pop up video" style with little anecdotes about what happened to everyone after the movie ended. Such a fun way to do an epilogue!

There are a couple of other really good songs that better showcase HG's singing, but they would spoil the movie for anyone that hasn't seen it, so I won't post links to those.

Anyway, I highly recommend this movie for anyone who is looking for something to rent. If you like romantic comedies, if you like HG or DB, and especially if you were a child of the 80's, you really should see it!

  - Really? In all the interviews I watched regarding this movie, he kept saying how he had no musical talent or even any interest in music before this movie. They hired a vocal coach for him and even gave him piano lessons. I looked online briefly and couldn't find anything about him being in a band in the past.         A generation ago, actors were expected to be able to do more - sing, dance a little, etc. I suppose there was more theatre influence or crossover than there is today. With TV and the drop in popularity of the movie musical, actors aren't expected - or even need - to know how to do anything but act. I think it's quite a bonus when an actor has a decent singing voice - like Nicole and Ewan in "Moulin Rouge". Who'd-a thunk?         For the most part, I agree with you. Just look at the members of The Rat Pack, Doris Day, and Shirley Jones, who had to do it all. Although I have to point out that Audrey Hepburn's lack of a singing voice didn't hold her back. Same with Deborah Kerr. Both actresses were dubbed for the songs in "My Fair Lady" and "The King and I" respectively. But you're right that we don't expect it as much anymore. It's almost like we keep acting and singing separate, and if you do both, then the stage is your place. Inside, I know I'll go over if music is the topic.         I think we are seeing a return to the days where the stars are expected to do it all: sing, dance, & act. I'm thinking specifically of Hillary Duff, Miley Cyrus, & the stars of High School Musical. Also you have Amanda Bynes, Raven, & Mandy Moore, to name some slightly lesser known ones. What a lot of folks don't understand is just how powerful psychotropic drugs can be...they can cause dramatic and scary changes in even the gentlest & most stable person. This vet and his family are paying the price for a mental health system that is woefully inadequate to meet and treat the needs of our returning service personnel.         It stinks, and is unfortunately nothing new. A part of the issue is these vets who are having problems must negotiate a complex bureaucracy. They are often given conflicting (or just plain wrong) information. It's almost a full time job to try to get benefits. Many just give up before they are finally seen. Even when they are, the care is often not what it should be due to budget shortfalls. As citizens, we need to understand that this issue is going to be with us many years from now. I just read online that comedian Bernie Mac passed away at the age of 50 from complications from pneumonia. While I haven't seen much of his roles, I did think he was funny in "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle." Fifty is still fairly young.
