Subject: What's wrong with loving to watch tv???

I'm getting sick of hearing people say "I don't watch tv!" And they say it in such a way to infer that they're too good or too busy or have too much of a life to watch tv.

I am busy and I have a life and in my down time, I love to watch tv. I may be tired after a long day and just want to vegetate in front of the tv. There are a lot of good things to watch especially with Netflix. We all have our preferences and they may be different (although we all loved JAG right?)

What's wrong with that?

[> Nothing, Judi! Everyone has their preferences. Next time someone says that to you say, "Well, you should! You should watch some Dr. Phil so you'll learn not to be so high-falutin'!" -- The Chief, 00:06:58 07/23/14 Wed [1]

[> Many people don't watch tv as they prefer doing other things. And that's good. But I love it when sanctimonious people tell they don't watch tv. I respond with, " I watch a LOT of tv. I love dramas, and good movies, and documentaries, and dance shows, and watching talented people in their various fields. I like watching the news to see what is going on in the world, and biographies and science programs, and comedies, and trash reality shows.. I read 2 daily newspapers, listen to the radio, and I check out the internet. I like getting my information from a variety of sources." ( Inside) -- Cece, 04:27:08 07/23/14 Wed [1]

Really smart, cultured people don't make a big deal about not watching television. The do or they don't. Who cares. But the tiresome culture snobs who say it as a put down, as if they are culturally superior--they are the ones I like to turn the tables on, and I am quite at ease doing so.

[> I usually say "I don't watch MUCH TV" and there's a big difference. And I'm usually saying it when people are asking if I've seen a certain commercial and I don't know what they're talking about. Then I shrug and say "Well I don't watch much TV". And I'm certainly not a snob about it because I do spend a lot of time watching old movies. -- JJ Ronda--a lot of what's on these days isn't good anyway, IMO. I'm down to just three regular shows I watch., 06:15:10 07/23/14 Wed [1]

[> [> JJ, you come over as knowledgable, but never a snob. You are not one of the people judi is talking about. There was a time when my DH and I didn't have a tv at all, and every now and again, we'd rent one for a few weeks. Now, if I didn't have tv, I'd go insane, (or maybe tv has made me insane!) (Inside again.) -- Cece, 10:09:21 07/23/14 Wed [1]

I've begun to realise that it doesn't matter what people do to unwind and entertain themselves, as long as they are doing no harm (no pun intended.) For example, I love almost all genres of music, but have a particular love of opera. I know that it's an esoteric genre and don't expect everyone else to love it, if they've never had much exposure. But I also like hip-hop and heavy metal rock, and it drives me nuts when fellow opera/classical lovers, dismiss these other forms from a place of snobbery, not just a difference in taste. Of course, that does not mean we can't express our different opinions and tastes in friendly conversations.

It is a tiresome cliche to say that life is short, except it's true. Let people enjoy themselves in whatever way they can. You can bet that no one out there is free of worries and fears, so who can deny anyone the right to also get some enjoyment in life in whatever way they choose?

Confession time: I have been horribly guilty of being a culture snob at times in my life, including on this board, for which I am ashamed. It is always hurtful, particularly if the criticism is aimed at an entertainment form someone else loves.

[> [> [> I don't have any "must see" tv shows since JAG went off the air. Altho I did get enthused about "TURN" that was on AMC on Sunday nights this spring and look forward to it's return next year. I like it because it's a dramatic representation of American history. But I haven't allowed myself to get caught up in any series on TV since JAG left. And I don't have a DVR, so I can't do that either. -- The Chief - If you ever catch me watching hours of TV, it's a marathon of shows like 'American Pickers' or "CSI: Miami" or "Hisory's Mysteries" or some such, late at night., 22:33:21 07/23/14 Wed [1]

[> [> I was a massive fan of Barney Millar. I love the understated humour, and subtle deliveries. It was clever and funny. jI also loved the funky, jazzy theme music, and the way it built up. -- Cece, 13:41:21 07/29/14 Tue [1]

[> I'm an avid TV watcher and I'm not ashamed to admit it. I watch every night and am saving on my DVR at the same time. It's a break in the action of my life and I don't have to think about problems or worries. -- jenks, 08:32:41 07/28/14 Mon [1]
