When I saw this, I knew I had to post it here. I was going to post it on the HB, but it applies to many more shows than just "JAG".

This is a much better explanation than merely determining when a show "jumps the shark". I give you... the birth, growth and demise of a Television series....

[> [> Oh my! Wow....it was as if this really was about JAG. Season 7 caused us so much irritation after S6 and LL. Dare I even mention S8-10? Great synopses of what happens with most shows that make it long term. -- Cece...waiving to the Chief, 03:18:39 07/13/12 Fri [1]

[> actually - I liked season 7 - We got rid of Mic and Rene and settled back into Harm and Mac as a team. We still had AJ watching out for his people and I noticed at jagmeet this year we watched a lot of season 2,3 and 4 - most of the classic eps - then skipped to seven for eps like head to toe and In country. for JAG Ive always said their greatest loss was losing Scot Gimbel -- chris k, 07:51:56 07/13/12 Fri [1]

[> Well that definitly expalins everything! However most shows I'm the least bit interested in don't get the Season One Grace period beneift of the doubt and are canceled after 3, 5,or 8 episodes, now allowing for the second season adjustments! -- usmgrad, great find Chief, 08:00:27 07/13/12 Fri [1]

[> (Waving back to Cece.... Hi!) Yes, it was if they had JAG in mind when they wrote it, eh? ChrisK, I agree, there were some good eps in S7, and "Adrift 1/2" will always be favorites for me. I think TPTB did try hard to re-energize the show, and part of that longer-term success was due to a variety of factors.... -- The Chief (inside), 09:04:27 07/13/12 Fri [1]

Just my opinion, but....

JAG became a top-10 show during Season 5. Prior to that, it bounced around in the top 40. Still great numbers, with a dedicated, loyal fanbase. In Season 6, we got a new President, new "rules of engagement" for our military, a Commander in Chief who was a vet himself, as well as 9/11 bringing out many Americans' patriotic side. The mood of the country changed and people were looking for something that more closely reflected their views. JAG fit that bill. That influx of new viewers (helped along by old eps on USA, that fed more syndication monies into the studio), propelled JAG along, even tho those of us who had been around for a long time found the show to be bogging down and becoming a little ridiculous at times.

9/11 provided more story ideas for actual cases, so that helped create more episodes even though the character development took many strange turns. The new influx of viewers (in 2001) started watching a very different show than the one most of us started watching in 1995. But they still loved it enough to keep watching, even when it moved to Friday nights (tv purgatory). Maybe by then it had become more like the other tv shows they were used to with wacky relationship interactions and such.

Anyway, it was amazing JAG lasted as long as it did - without 9/11, it probably wouldn't have made it past S7 or S8. To me, that changes the dynamic a little in regard to the graphic I linked to, because I don't think Season 8-10 negated 3 early seasons (as the graphic indicates). Maybe on the whole, it only canceled out 1 to 1.5 seasons, but as a die-hard fan I might be biased ;-)

[> [> I liked S 7 too, but I didn't like the way they did the follow through after "Come to me." Some episodes were good in every season, except the second half of S10 which I hated with the white hot intensity of a 1000 suns. Btw, Adrift 1 was, imo, the best episode in the way it was crafted. Adrift 2, suffered in comparison, but was still a great ep...except for the Renee ending and a huge let down. -- Cece, 14:01:54 07/13/12 Fri [1]

[> I think Greys Anatomy might be the exception. The West Wing did well in further seasons as well. But it's really hard to keep it going. -- Theresa, 13:05:03 07/15/12 Sun [1]

[> [> Greys jumped the shark a few times IMHO, the musical episode when Calli was injuried and the few flash backs with Mers Mother. Though I do think that the show is near its end . As for West Wing, the final season sucked as it became the Josh show and I couldnt stand him -- DOS, who loves from the musical ep the song sung by Sara Martinez, The Story., 10:09:59 07/16/12 Mon [1]

[> [> Grey's Anatomy has been so many different shows that it's sometimes hard to tell. I gave up watching it several years ago when they flipped everybody's storylines just once too often. I mean, really, how many chiefs-of-staff can they have? It worked on MASH because it was military and everybody got a turn, but in a real hospital . . . ? I watched their version of "What if?" and thought of what that show could've been, too. -- Dancer, 02:02:25 07/17/12 Tue [1]

[> [> [> Agreed... Grey's got too crazy for me... stopped watching a while ago. I think The West Wing did much better thanks to some good guest stars in the final seasons, but it lost some steam towards the end too IMO. -- Dee, 10:18:18 08/08/12 Wed [1]
