She had had a lot of practice at patching up battle scars like these. Her gaze remained trained on his hand when she was done, taking it in both of hers and letting her fingers trace over it slowly. He wasn't so sure he knew what it detailed to be a father and he definitely didn't know if he was cut out for it but the past few months had shown him that he was in love with this child that his friend was carrying. He had been so amazed the first time he had felt the baby move, had been entranced by watching how Astrids body changed and shifted as she grew closer to her due date. At the moment, he was stretched out on his side on the little lounge swing that they had scrounged up somewhere on the porch, wearing a beater and some low slung gym shorts, just enjoying the warm sun for the first time in a while. A cigarette was hanging from his bottom lip and his eyes were closed, taking the few quiet minutes he had to think things over. There was no way he was going to be able to sign that baby away and if he was the father they had to have his signature before they could do anything right? A soft sigh escaped his lips as he took the smoke out of his mouth, ashing it off to the side before returning to his deep thinking.

• She was napping a lot, through the day now, and had had to cut back her hours at the little grocery store she had been working at, because she was just so ridiculously uncomfortable at night that the night sleeping thing wasn't working. She was just waking up from one of those naps and wandered out onto the porch, sleepy. Things weren't exactly roses between her and Mani but they had settled back into a friendship, far less charged than the previous one when he had just moved back into the house, and sometimes, just sometimes, she was able to forget about the point of contention growing larger and larger and looming closer and closer day by day inside of her. • She had kind of tried to stay out of the midst of things as much as possible. Though she hadn't really known Lysia very well, just seeing everyone around the house in so much pain was more than enough to bring her down there as well.
