[> 1st, I have to say he looked OUTSTANDING! Loved the way he looked walking across the cemetery but it was a funeral? Right? Loved the first hot sex in the bathroom, until Logan showed up double cringeworthy and a great big EEEEW! Loved the dance. I mean really loved the dance...but then the rest of the family, the concept of the show, the son thats the Beavis and Butt head throwback, the daughter who could stand in for Wednesday on the Adamms family, set my teeth on edge the pretrollop blonde, then theres Logan, the supposed nomal one, except, I'm with Wolf, I dont like this guy either. -- mkim Loved this much shorter haircut, he really looks like Harm's devil twin. I understand that the New Zealand show Scoundrels is based on has been running for about 6 seasons in NZ. Some of us have been talking offline about whether the show (here in the USA) can sustain itself if Wolf remains in jail throughout. In the NZ version, does he stay in jail or was he released - if released in what season?

[> It's interesting how everyone sees everything so differently...I love the chemistry between DJE and VM (Inside)... -- ABC, 12:54:50 07/21/10 Wed [1]

In fact, I find their relationship the only interesting thing about the show. It's clear to me they still love each other, but I wonder how functional that relationship is, and if you peel back everything else, is it really one that works. Their interactions make it clear it's not really that happy, and I just enjoy the sort of undertone to it.

Unfortunately, for me, the rest of the show lacks way too much. You can see the lines coming from miles away and the characters are too cliched. Not that that's always bad, because sometimes those cliches work, but for me they don't work with this group. Plus, they keep saying the characters are so quirky, but that comes organically, not from beating us over the head with it, especially when the characters aren't all that quirky so much as stereotyped.

I like the premise of the show, and feel it has great potential, but for some reason it isn't working. I think it's gotten better than the first one, but still not enough. I don't see it lasting past summer, but it was nice to see DJE as someone other than Harm.

[> [> Chief, you want Wolf to be the one going straight? You just can't see Harm in this role.LOL Inside... -- judi, 17:29:53 07/22/10 Thu [1]

But it's not Harm. It's DJE. This is not a mafia show or a a normal family. It's about a family of small time criminals. They do break the law but don't physically hurt other people. Wolf is the most crooked char of all and doesn't like Logan because he did go straight. Most families have the black sheep, the bad kid - not the good kid but this isn't an ordinary family. The kids may be stereotypes, but I've yet to find a show that isn't. It is offbeat and while it's not my favorite show, I do like it and will keep watching it despite the tattoos.

Oh and one complaint, when Logan was at work, his co-worker called Wolf white trash. That is a problem. DJE doesn't look like white trash at all. He looks like he could be a lawyer or pilot. LOL They should have trashed up his appearance more then just giving him a few tatts.

[ Edit | View ]

[> [> [> No, I was just saying that because it would be more interesting and less stereotypical... heck it was just the fumbling musings of a confused fan... (inside) -- The Chief, 20:24:33 07/22/10 Thu [1]

I guess I was trying to draw upon the "honor among thieves" adage, that doesn't seem to apply to the West family. Sure they have a "brand standard", but they don't support each other like I would suspect. I dunno. It just seems as if the clarinet section is pitchy.... or something.

And yeah, DJE is way too clean cut for this show. A goatee, longer hair, maybe a scar or a tooth missing... something. (all costumed, of course). He does look like he could be a pilot or a lawyer or a CIA agent or a crop duster....

Wait...

[> On scoundrels -- Kali, 16:14:23 07/21/10 Wed [1]

To see ABC hyped this so much even before some movie trailers in my theatre I saw Scoundrels commercials. I saw 2 eps already and I cant pinpoint exactly what's missing. I just find the youngest girl the most endearing one and normal. The rest I cant invest myself in the character even David and his costar. I just caught on seeing him on Jag and Scoundrels and his chemistry was really palpable with the actress playing Sarah Mackenzie.
Even his chemistry with his previous Jag partner was offbeat compared to Mac. If he appears opposite Denise in AW Im gonna faint. Cheryl reminds me of that blonde in season 1 that was so after Harm and so aggressive.I dont remember her name. What other projects David has that are good? I think Jag is his very best.

[> [> Kali, first of all, welcome to the board. I don't think that I've seen you post here before. [> [> Kali - welcome from me, as well. Inside for response to your comments... -- The Chief, 23:45:43 07/21/10 Wed [1]

Like you, I am having a hard time "loving" this show, as much as I really want to for DJE's sake. It's got great potential, but the stereotyped "children" are only part of the problem.

I have a problem with Wolf's integrity. Unfortunately, the "West Code" (no home invasions, no violence) doesn't include "stick up for each member of the family" - like a Mafia family. I could handle them all being crooks, struggling to go straight, etc, but what I cannot stomach is Wolf's machinations against Cheryl's efforts to hold down a job, and then he expects to "finish what he started" with her in the bedroom when he gets a "day pass"??? I can understand Cheryl's inability to resist him (who could?) but I felt "used" for her. And the way she responded to his advances - when she finally started to give in - was boring. I expected a little more sizzle from HER. She always seems "tired" and "world weary" and her "banter" with him as no spark. It's not funny or clever, it's just defensive.

And I can understand that he may have issues with one of his children, but I couldn't stand the contempt he showed toward Logan. Can he not handle the fact that one of his children went on to college and entered a respectable field? Is he that insecure?

They say the characters are quirky, but they're not. They ARE stereotypical. The show itself, the production values, are what's really boring - no "constant orange glow" that makes LA look like Miami (CSI: Miami); no odd camera angles or special effects; etc. Nowadays, unless you have dynamite writers, you either have to have quirky characters or quirky production. You can't do both "straight" anymore. And Cheryl is a fairly boring lead, since she seems to be the hub around which the wheel turns. Even Wolf is not the center of attention, and that's probably the problem.

IF they had wanted to REALLY go for it, they would have made Cheryl the head of the crime family and Wolf the one trying to take the family straight after her getting shipped off to jail. THAT would have been much more interesting. And different. And quirky!

On another topic, DJE will never appear opposite Denise in Army Wives. Harm & Mac were a "one show wonder".

Anyway, I have enjoyed the show to some degree, but it's not my favorite as a whole. I'm happy for DJE to be part of a summer series that at least some people are watching, but I'm disappointed it's not a run-away hit for him. He needs to get in with FOX - almost all of their shows do well or are critically acclaimed.

[> [> [> DJE needs to play to his "type" whcih is the strong, respectable, hero. This business is all about type. You have to know your type and work it. -- TF, 19:39:39 07/22/10 Thu [1]

[> [> [> Since, JAG, he's been trying to be many "types," I assume to try to showcase his versatility. That's all very good and I assume necessary when you're trying to move on from a 10 year run, but some of the vehicles he chose were HORRIBLE (the sleazy movie) or his roles so miniscule as to showcase nothing. Just my opinion. -- j, 21:27:02 07/22/10 Thu [1]

[ Edit | View ]

[> [> [> [> I agree, "j". Some of the things he has done have been severely cringeworthy. The airplane one (Code 1114?) wasn't too bad but it was predictable. Aside from JAG, DJE's best roles have been "Steve Mason" (Holiday Affair), "Christopher Paget" (Degree of Guilt ), "James Dodson" (Dodson's Journey), and "Carl the Moving Guy" (Seinfeld). Each showcased part of the "strong hero type" that DJE does so well, from the serious moods to the comic timing. -- The Chief, 23:46:24 07/22/10 Thu [1]

Believe Im not a shipper but I must admit what DJE and CB have going onscreen was purrfect. DB was the problem.
VM and DJE are lousy. Scoundrels is bad dont know if they're a PG Sopranos altogether with the Gates that feels like Knots Landing with vampires. Its disappointing that the show is no good because my hubby wanted CB as a guest star femme fatale or DJE and other Jag stars visiting AW.
Im a fan of AW,Burn Notice and most of the Fox shows as the Chief pointed out.
