To see ABC hyped this so much even before some movie trailers in my theatre I saw Scoundrels commercials. I saw 2 eps already and I cant pinpoint exactly what's missing. I just find the youngest girl the most endearing one and normal. The rest I cant invest myself in the character even David and his costar. I just caught on seeing him on Jag and Scoundrels and his chemistry was really palpable with the actress playing Sarah Mackenzie.
Even his chemistry with his previous Jag partner was offbeat compared to Mac. If he appears opposite Denise in AW Im gonna faint. Cheryl reminds me of that blonde in season 1 that was so after Harm and so aggressive.I dont remember her name. What other projects David has that are good? I think Jag is his very best.

[> [> Kali, first of all, welcome to the board. I don't think that I've seen you post here before. To answer your question, some of the things that I think you might enjoy seeing DJE in are Dodson's Journey, Holiday Affair, Degree of Guilt and The Man Who Lost Himself/The Stranger I Married. -- Lee - I know that Degree of Guilt and Dobson's Journey are on DVD because I have them., 20:36:56 07/21/10 Wed [1]

Like you, I am having a hard time "loving" this show, as much as I really want to for DJE's sake. It's got great potential, but the stereotyped "children" are only part of the problem.

I have a problem with Wolf's integrity. Unfortunately, the "West Code" (no home invasions, no violence) doesn't include "stick up for each member of the family" - like a Mafia family. I could handle them all being crooks, struggling to go straight, etc, but what I cannot stomach is Wolf's machinations against Cheryl's efforts to hold down a job, and then he expects to "finish what he started" with her in the bedroom when he gets a "day pass"??? I can understand Cheryl's inability to resist him (who could?) but I felt "used" for her. And the way she responded to his advances - when she finally started to give in - was boring. I expected a little more sizzle from HER. She always seems "tired" and "world weary" and her "banter" with him as no spark. It's not funny or clever, it's just defensive.

And I can understand that he may have issues with one of his children, but I couldn't stand the contempt he showed toward Logan. Can he not handle the fact that one of his children went on to college and entered a respectable field? Is he that insecure?

They say the characters are quirky, but they're not. They ARE stereotypical. The show itself, the production values, are what's really boring - no "constant orange glow" that makes LA look like Miami (CSI: Miami); no odd camera angles or special effects; etc. Nowadays, unless you have dynamite writers, you either have to have quirky characters or quirky production. You can't do both "straight" anymore. And Cheryl is a fairly boring lead, since she seems to be the hub around which the wheel turns. Even Wolf is not the center of attention, and that's probably the problem.

IF they had wanted to REALLY go for it, they would have made Cheryl the head of the crime family and Wolf the one trying to take the family straight after her getting shipped off to jail. THAT would have been much more interesting. And different. And quirky!

On another topic, DJE will never appear opposite Denise in Army Wives. Harm & Mac were a "one show wonder".

Anyway, I have enjoyed the show to some degree, but it's not my favorite as a whole. I'm happy for DJE to be part of a summer series that at least some people are watching, but I'm disappointed it's not a run-away hit for him. He needs to get in with FOX - almost all of their shows do well or are critically acclaimed.

[> [> [> DJE needs to play to his "type" whcih is the strong, respectable, hero. This business is all about type. You have to know your type and work it. -- TF, 19:39:39 07/22/10 Thu [1]

[> [> [> Since, JAG, he's been trying to be many "types," I assume to try to showcase his versatility. That's all very good and I assume necessary when you're trying to move on from a 10 year run, but some of the vehicles he chose were HORRIBLE (the sleazy movie) or his roles so miniscule as to showcase nothing. Just my opinion. -- j, 21:27:02 07/22/10 Thu [1]

[> [> [> [> I agree, "j". Some of the things he has done have been severely cringeworthy. The airplane one (Code 1114?) wasn't too bad but it was predictable. Aside from JAG, DJE's best roles have been "Steve Mason" (Holiday Affair), "Christopher Paget" (Degree of Guilt ), "James Dodson" (Dodson's Journey), and "Carl the Moving Guy" (Seinfeld). Each showcased part of the "strong hero type" that DJE does so well, from the serious moods to the comic timing. -- The Chief, 23:46:24 07/22/10 Thu [1]
