How to Write a Winning Dissertation -- Karis Lee, 03:56:12 11/09/10 Tue [1]
Writing a Disertation Requires Mastery of Research Methods
for valid and reliable data collection, availability of all the resources and perfection of dissertation format, structure and citation styles. This article offers some guiltiness about how to write a winning dissertation.
Dissertation Writing certainly is very challenging and time consuming task. Writing a dissertation requires to set before clear aims and objectives, define the research approach and methods and achieve the objectives with valid and reliable results.
Dissertation Writing is the most vital and exigent task for students. It is in fact a real test of their academic learning, mastery of the language, and command of expression. For students, dissertation writing has become an adamant task because of countless reasons. The most obvious reason why students fail in writing a good dissertation is that they don’t give due attention to its format, structure and the citation style.
The proper format of masters dissertation is very important and it should be consistent throughout to offer a professional look. Mostly, universities prefer times new roman 12 font size with 1.5” margin on both sides to allow binding.
The proper structure of any acceptable dissertation is:
1. Dissertation title
2. Dissertation acknowledgment
3. Dissertation abstract
4. Table of contents
5. Dissertation Introduction
6. Dissertation Literature review
7. Dissertation methodology
8. Dissertation results
9. Dissertation conclusion
Some universities prefer to break the dissertation even to six or seven chapters. For this purpose, the results are presented in fourth chapter while a critical analysis of these results is presented in fifth chapter. Then conclusion is offered in chapter six and in the seventh chapter dissertation recommendation and limitations are offered.
Finally, the citation style is also very important and if students fail to follow the given citation style by the university they are sure to fail and lose their valuable degree. Citation is must for any academic writing and every reference to any research of the author must be quoted using the required citation style. For example, in UK universities Harvard citation style and APA citation style are mostly used. In order to be familiar with these citation styles, there is a lot of material on internet and APA citation examples as well as Harvard citation examples can be found easily.
Besides the dissertation format, structure and the citation style, choosing the proper research methodology is very critical for data collection process. There are two kinds of data collected for academic research: primary and the secondary. The secondary data comes from the already written sources like books, articles, journals and information available from web. On the other hand, the primary data is collected personally through interviews, case study, and surveys.

American Values -- Ronan Morais Pena, 17:34:30 06/18/09 Thu [1]
The American values
The material which I analyzed was fliers that I found at NMSU when I did my Exchange program. All of them have, in my opinion, one point in common: the information is something very important for American people and for this they try to make it easily available to everybody.
The first one warns about the dangerous in Juarez that the exchange students can find if they go there and don’t take care of themselves. It also includes some dos and don’ts for those that still want to visit the city even being aware about the dangerous. The value here is the safeness.
The second one tries to inform the students how they have to behave when they go to parties. Some of the tips concern the amount of alcohol which it is safe to drink. Here we find again the safeness for the individual’s health.
The third one shows how the university worries about their students. Like many other fliers that I saw, it instructs the students where and how they can find help to resolve their emotional problems. In this specific one, we have information about emotional abuse. Here we find two values: the intervention of the educational systems that is worried not only with formal education but everything that is part of students’ welfare and the solidarity between people through support groups.

Jennifer realized that she wanted to know more about her Italian heritage. She called her grandmother and asked her everything I could think of to ask. After, Jennifer began looking for documents and went to her local Family History Center, a genealogical resource run by the Mormon Church. Jennifer learned much about her family's immigration history. In her researches Jennifer found two “Caterinas” because their parents had chosen to name them both Caterina: her grandmother and her great-grandmother's younger sister. Jennifer wrote to younger Caterina's daughter - Francesca Saglimbene and the two families meet. Jennifer learned more details about her family tree. She also learned about her relatives that still lived in Misilmeri, and the mayor had invited them all to the town hall for a celebration of the unique bonds between Italy and America.

Char Bar is an African-American who decided to look for her ancestors. Her family began years back during the slavery time and she couldn’t find their names so easily because it was hard to slaves to leave their track. They were always sent to the places their owner told them and their names used to change and, after the Civil War, many of them had their documents destroyed.
Although she knew it would be hard to find her ancestors, she didn’t give up and started putting some oral stories together, then, she decided to look for written registers.
She could find some information that led her to the documents of some slaves and even found out the price that was paid for some of her ancestors.
It was a great experience that she went through and she felt happy to be able to look back and find part of her own history.

Summary: Byron Yee - Discovering a Paper Son -- Marina Zerlotini, 07:46:40 06/10/09 Wed [1]
Bing Quail Yee, Byron Yee's father came from China to escape the Japanese invasion in 1938. He and his brother settle themselves on Ellis Island to work, but in 1882 Congress had passed a law prohibiting Chinese immigrants to work in United States. So Yee's father and his brother were ilegal immigrants.
Byron Yee tell us that people from other countries were kept for interrogation for one day at most, but Chinese immigrants were kept for even two years! To escape the law, Bing Quail Yee and his brother created a false document proving that Bing Quail's brother was actually his father, so Bing Quail being (false, actually) American and Quail's brother having and American son, they could stay in the USA to work.
Bing Quail Yee was asked 197 questions about his origins and, after that, he and his brother were free from the investigation.
Several years later, Byron Yee discovered that his father was a paper son (a son only in the paper) and that his grandfather was actually his uncle! Byron Yee finishes his story saying that he couldn't feel more thankful to his father and uncle for doing what they had to do so that he could be there in USA today.

Beware of British and Canadian Police Misconduct -- Regata, 07:29:50 06/10/09 Wed [1]
HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN TO THE POLICE THEIR EVIL MISCONDUCT?
VOLUNTEERS WELCOME TO SHARE THIS INFORMATION WITH OTHERS:
BEWARE OF RACIST COWARD TERRORIST BRITISH AND CANADIAN POLICE USING WALL SEE THROUGH TECHNOLOGIES AND AUDIO LISTENING IN DEVICES IN CONNIVANCE WITH NEIGHBOURS TO DEHUMANIZINGLY HARASS ASIANS IN THEIR HOMES WAILING SIRENS FROM OUTSIDE EACH TIME ASIANS MAKE ANY LIVING BODY MOVEMENTS IN THEIR OWN AND RENTED HOMES, WAKING, SLEEPING, GOING TO TOILET, EATING, PRAYING, ETC, FOR WOMEN AND MEN. THE TERRORIST WHITE RACISTS FORGET THAT THEY ROAMED AS UNCIVILIZED NAKED WILD SAVAGES IN THE FORESTS WHILE ASIANS WERE FAR BETTER CIVILIZED AND CULTURED OVER MANY YEARS OF ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS THAT HAVE HELD AND NOT CRUMBLED AS THE WESTERN CIVILIZATIONS. GRABBING MATERIAL WEALTH THROUGH TWISTING THE WORD THROUGH APPLICATION OF EVIL SCHEMING INTELLECT AND COVETING AND SCREWING OTHER COUNTRIES RESOURCES THROUGH RESOURCE SNATCHING THROUGH WARS, ARM TWISTING BUSINESSES AND GUTLESS BOOTLICKERS IS NOT SUCCESS NOR EVERYTHING IN LIFE. THEIR BRUTE FORCE METHODS, GREEDY ALGORITHMS, GRREDY CAN OF WORMS, AND INFILTRATING INTO OTHERS PRIVACY METHODOLOGIES REFLECTS THEIR INNER UGLY CARICATURES EVEN IF OUTERLY SUGAR COATED AND ATTRACTIVE. THESE GO AGAINST THE VERY TEACHINGS OF THE SCRIPTURES.
ADDITIONALLY THE TERRORIST BRITISH AND CANADIAN POLICE ARE WAILING SIRENS TO PROVOKE ASIAN MALES WHEN ASIAN WOMEN GO TO TOILET IN THEIR PRIVATE HOMES AND APARTMENTS IN A PATTERN OF A WOLVES COMING OUT OF NOWHERE SUDDENLY TO WAIL SIRENS AND THEN FOLLOWING A PATTERN OF SILENCE WHILE THE ASIAN LADIES ARE NOT IN TOILET. IT HAS BEEN OBSERVED EACH TIME THE SIRENS ARE WAILIED THERE IS NO EMERGENCY. FURTHERMORE, THE TERRORIST BRITISH AND CANADIAN POLICE ARE IN CONNIVANCE WITH THEIR RACIST STOOGES TO HONK CARS WHEN THE TERRORIST BRITISH AND CANADIAN POLICE ARE UNABLE TO WAIL SIRENS WHEN ASIAN LADIES GO TO BATHROOM. THIS SHOWS THE INHERENT RACISM OF THE TERRORIST BRITISH AND CANADIAN POLICE PORTRAYING A NON-RACIST IMAGE OF THEMSELVES. THE BRITISH AND CANADIAN POLICE AND THEIR RACIST STOOGES ARE COMMITTING SEXUAL HARASSMENT OF ASIAN WOMEN AND MEN.
RACIAL HARASSMENT IS SERIOUS AND CAUSES ANGER, FEAR, DEPRESSION, CONFUSION, HELPLESSNESS, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL ILLNESSES AFFECTING RELATIONSHIPS OF PEOPLE AT HOME AND WORK. RACISM MEANS DISRUPTION OF FREEDOM. ANTI-CHRIST RACISTS AND THE RACIST POLICE BEHAVING RACISTLY COMMIT PRIVACY AND INFORMATION THEFT, BEHAVING AS CRIMINALS.

THE TERRORIST BRITISH AND CANADIAN POLICE CANNOT BEAR TO BE WATCHED AND THEIR UGLY ANTI-CHRIST DEEDS EXPOSED. THEY FORGET DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE OHTERS DO UNTO YOU. EVEN EDITING THESE LINES ON OFF-LINE COMPUTERS ALARMS THE EVIL DOERS AS THEIR UGLY DEEDS ARE BEING EXPOSED AND CAUSES THEM TO WAIL SIRENS. WATCH THE BRITISH AND CANADIAN POLICE:
DISHONEST RACIST ANTI-CHRIST TERRORIST BRITISH AND CANADIAN POLICE IN STINKING UNIFORMS PERPETUATE RACISM IN CONNIVANCE WITH RACIST ANTI-CHRIST WHITE DISHONEST BRITISH AND CANADIAN NEIGHBORS TO ILLEGALLY AND UNWARRANTEDLY USE WALL SEE THROUGH TECHNOLOGY, AUDIO LISTENING IN DEVICES, EMR VAN ECK PHREAKING EQUIPMENT, AND INTERNET, EMAIL, AND LANDLINE AND CELLPHONE TELEPHONE HACKING AGAINST ASIANS IN THEIR HOMES THROUGH WAILING SIRENS FROM OUTSIDE FOR EVERY LIVING BODY MOVEMENT OF ASIANS IN THEIR HOMES. THEY FORGET THAT 'HE WHO LIVES BY THE SWORD DIES BY THE SWORD' - 'THOSE WHO PERPETUATE VAMPIRE CULTURE WILL DIE BY THE VAMPIRE CULTURE'.
ABUSING AND DISRESPECTING PRIVACY IS A HEINOUS CRIME. THE CONCEPT BEING PREACHED IS THAT 'WHY DOES ANYONE NEED TO WORRY ABOUT PRIVACY IF THEY HAVE DONE NOTHING WRONG'. THIS IS THE ANTI-CHRIST WAYS OF INFILTRATING SCUMBAGS TERRORIST BRITISH AND CANADIAN POLICE. WHY DOES ANYONE NEED PRIVACY?: WHY DOES EVERYONE DRESS? WHY DOESN'T EVERYONE GO NAKED? LACK OF PRIVACY IS SAME AS WALKING EVERYWHERE NAKED AS A STREAKER! ARE THE TERRORIST BRITISH POLICE PREACHING THE CONCEPT OF EVERYONE BECOMING STREAKERS - NAKED UNCIVILIZED PEOPLE EVERYWHERE IN UK AND CANADA? JUST SO THE TERRORIST BRITISH AND CANADIAN POLICE CAN RETAIN THEIR ABUSE OF POWER THROUGH PROCLAIMING AN INFLATED, MANUFACTURED, FALSE, SELF-INITIATED SELFISH CONCEPTS OF SO-CALLED TERROR THREATS AND GAME PLAYING WAILING SIRENS AS EMPTY VESSELS MAKING MORE NOISE IN THEIR ILLEGAL ATTEMPT TO CREATE SOCIAL CONTROL THAT IS MAINLY A SOCIAL NUISANCE. THE POLICE AUTHORIZE UNCOUTH RACIST WHITE NEIGHBORS TO CREATE A SMOKE SCREEN FOR THE POLICE TO WAIL SIRENS AND NEIGHBORS TO CREATE LOUD DISTURBANCE AT APPROPRIATE TIMES CORRESPONDING TO ASIANS WORKING ON THEIR OFFLINE COMPUTERS, CONNECTING TO INTERNET, MAKING PHONE CONVERSATIONS ON LANDLINE AND CELLPHONES, AND WHILE EATING, SLEEPING, TOILET, WORKING, LOOKING OUT THE WINDOWS, OPENING CLOSING CURTAINS AND BLINDS, SWITCHING ON AND OFF LIGHTS, ETC. THE RACIST WHITE BRITISH AND CANADIANS ARE FULL OF INFERIORITY COMPLEX THEMSELVES DUE TO THEIR IMPROPER UPBRINGING THAT IS REFLECTED IN THEIR WHITE RACIST SCUMBAG BEHAVIOUR OF INHERENT RACIAL INTOLERANCE OF THE ASIANS IN CONNIVANCE WITH RACIST WHITE SCUMBAG POLICE.
ABUSING PRIVACY AND HARASSING HUMANS - LIVING CREATURES OF GOD, IS HARMFUL TO MIND, BODY AND SOUL. THUS, THE TERRORIST BRITISH AND CANADAIN POLICE HAVE BECOME THE PERFECT ANTI-CHRIST. THEY WILL BE DEBARRED FROM THE KINGDOM OF GOD. EVADING TACTICS SUCH AS WHERE IS GOD, ETC, WILL NOT ABSOLVE THEM OF THEIR SINS AND THE BRITISH AND CANADIAN POLICE WILL NOT GO UNPUNISHED FOR THEIR HEINOUS CRIMES OF ABUSING PRIVACY.
THE TERRORIZING BRITISH AND CANADIAN POLICE ARE ADDITIONALLY USING HIDDEN LONG-DISTANCE CAMERAS FROM STRATEGIC POSITIONS TO TARGET THOSE WHO EXPOSE THEIR UGLY DEEDS. USING THESE CAMERAS, THEY BEAM THE VIDEO IMAGES TO THEIR POLICE CARS ROAMING WASTEFULLY WITH THEIR BACKS TO THE TARGETTED PEOPLE. AFTER THEIR AFOREMENTIONED UGLY DEEDS WERE EXPOSED, THEY PRETENDED NOT TO BE COWARDS THROUGH AVOIDING ROAMING WITH THEIR BACKS TO THE TARGETTED PEOPLE AND INSTEAD APPROACHING FROM FRONT. HOWEVER, THE FACT THAT THEY ARE COMMITTING THEIR HEINOUS CRIMES OF VIOLATING OTHER HUMANS PRIVACY THROUGH EVIL MEANS AND INSIDER INFORMERS AMID NEIGHBORS REFLECTS THEIR COWARDICE AND STILL MAKES THEM ABSOLUTE LOW CLASS COWARDS COWARDS COWARDS COWARDS. COWARDS ARE A SHAMEFUL DISGRACE FOR HUMANITY. THUS, THE TERRORIST BRITISH AND CANADIAN POLICE ARE THE ANTI-CHRIST COWARDS HARASSING THOSE WHO EXPOSE THE UGLY DEEDS OF POLICE HARASSMENT AND INVASION INTO PRIVACY OF PEOPLE AT HOME AND WORK, THROUGH VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE AUDIO AND VIDEO DEVICES, WALL SEE THROUGH TECHNOLOGIES, OFFLINE COMPUTER HACKING USING KEY LOGGERS AND ELECTRO MAGNETIC RADIATION (EMR) EQUIPMENT TO RETRIEVE IMAGES OF ANYTHING BEING TYPED ON PERSONAL COMPUTERS OFFLINE AT HOME AND WORK, AS WELL AS ONLINE COMPUTER HACKING THROUGH THE INTERNET, THROUGH ILLEGAL ACCESS UNDER THE FALSE PRETEXT OF SURVEILLANCE AND PROTECTION AND SECURITY, THEREBY VIOLATING PEOPLES HUMAN RIGHTS AND PRIVACY, INVADING THEIR LIVES AND CREATING DISTURBANCE AND HARASSMENT THAT WILL WEIGH HEAVILY UPON THEM IN THE JUDGMENT OF THE ALMIGHTY LORD OF CREATION THAT LEAVES NO WRONGS GO UNPUNISHED EVER!

Part II - task 1 -- Liliane, 07:31:43 05/14/09 Thu [36]
Hi everybody,
From now on the interaction will be developed just with Brazilians, once the Americans finished their semester of study.
The first task for this second part of the course is to write about the Brazilian values. Based on the text you read about American values, try to compare the attitudes of Brazilians towards the same values and talk about the ones that are more particularly associated to Brazilians.
Correct two mistakes made by your partner.

Farewell message / mensagem de despedida -- Liliane, 06:47:12 05/11/09 Mon [15]
Dear students,
Now that our interaction came to an end, I’d like to thank you for the shared knowledge which contributed so much for the improvement of our language skills.
I wish you success on your journeys. If you would like to practice your Portuguese in site, we would love to have you here in Brazil. In July, we have a winter cultural festival and we receive many visitors from abroad. This year, among the many mini-courses and workshops that are generally offered, we’ll also be offering Portuguese as a second language. If you are interested in taking part, just let me know. As I have already talked to Linda, if you wish to come to Brazil, we can make arrangements to have host families or students receiving you in their houses; that would help lower your costs. Anyway, we hope we can interact again in other occasions.
To finish this up, I’d like to leave you a special message:
“If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always got” (Anon) “Embrace adventure and dance with the unknown” (Tanak Akay).
Thanks for the learning adventure!!!!
See you,
Liliane.

Family Histories - Margaret Feeney - My Irish journey -- Michele, 15:36:09 06/08/09 Mon [1]
Margaret Feeney wanted to know about her family history, especially because after her father’s death there wasn’t anyone who could answer her questions about it. What she knew was that there were three generations of longshoremen in her family, as it was usually to the Irish men, during the early years of the 20th century.
She decided to reconstruct her family history starting from her grandfather Martin Feeney, but, it wasn’t so easy because in every record in what she searched was written just that he was born in Ireland, but not in which city.
After a series of disappointments, Margaret had the help of a researcher and finally discovered that her family came from Lettercalla on Leitor Moire Island. She went to there and found the house where her ancestors lived and she discovered also that there were a relative of hers who still lived there.

Class Task (2) - Ads -- Dalila, 09:20:19 06/04/09 Thu [1]
Hi there!
I have some ads from Houston (Texas) and Nashville (Tennessee). I'm not sure about the values that they talk about, I'll try to describe them.
Firstly, about Houston I have a flier about "Space Center Houston", where they have many attractions related to space, as "Space Center Plaza", "Space Center Theater", "Living in Space", "Flisht Simulator", "Starship Gallery", "NASA Tram Tour", etc. I can say that it shows an important value for us: the hard-work, they show their advanced status, as a nation that ocuppies the top of the First World.
I have another flyer about shopping (thats it for international visitors), it's a guide to receive a refund of the Texas Sales Tax paid on purchases in Texas, in it there are a lot of ads showing their material wealth, it is in different languages, it shows their worry about foreigners (visitors). The last one its about Nashville, the music city; It is the second most populous city in the state of Tennessee after Memphis. Nashville is a major hub for the health care, music, publishing, banking and transportation industries. This ad shows the cultural diversity there, mainly through the music: country, jazz, christian pop music.
I'll show them to you next class, to see if you agree with me.
That's it!
See you!!

Summary Jennifer Petrino -- Fernanda, 13:30:11 06/03/09 Wed [1]
Jennifer Petrino's family is Italian, but they've been in America for three generations, and over time, the connection to Italy has grown weaker. To find out more about her great grandmother, Caterina, Jennifer went to her local Family History Center, a genealogical resource run by the Mormon Church. In the microfilmed records of the ships arriving at Ellis Island, Jennifer learned much about her family's immigration history. Jennifer had found her great-grandmother's younger sister Caterina, who returned to Sicily after a brief stay in America. She was 18 years younger than her sister, and in a decision that would cause some confusion later on, their parents had chosen to name them both Caterina. Now Jennifer wanted to know if the younger Caterina had any descendants in Italy. A few months later, Jennifer travelled 5000 miles from her Florida home to the small town of San Giorgio su Legnano, outside of Milan, to meet the younger Caterina's daughter, Francesca, and her grand-daughter Barbara. Jennifer brought along old photographs given to her by her grandmother. At the Civil Records Office in Misilmeri, Jennifer learned more details about her family tree. She also learned that dozens of her relatives still lived in Misilmeri, and the mayor had invited them all to the town hall for a celebration of the unique bonds between Italy and America.

Summary about Putting My Family Together -- Joseane, 13:33:07 05/31/09 Sun [1]
Char Bah’s family are African-American and she want to put her family together. The Char Bah’s search began at the Cross Roads Baptist Church in rural southern Virginia. In tracing slave ancestors, she is challenged by a lack of records. Slaves often took the surnames of their owners, which could change when they were sold. She began by recording oral histories with family members from different lines, because many documents were burned at Civil War. Then she found a name and a owner name and than she was found her ancestors with 95 different names of owners. And like she says “to know who my ancestry is, is not to bring shame to what they were; it is to elevate them to what they made possible for the generations after them.”
