In reply to: Jim W 's message, "Aditional thoughts and questions from the student teacher thread" on 11:14:24 03/20/25 Thu

A friend (or rather, the older brother of a roommate) and I were out on an approved outing, from the school one evening, and we got separated.

But he figured that I could catch the bus from the bus-hub back to the school before our Exeats were up. Unfortunately, I had arrived just after the last bus (that was heading towards our school) pulled out.

So I was forced to call the school to try and get them to bring me back themselves. The first person to answer, I didn't recognize the voice. "XXX XXX, how may I direct your call?"

I had actually never called the school from outside, before this. So I was winging it a bit. "Yes, my name is W-xxxxxxx-k... I go to school here... I was supposed to..."

"Please hold, I'm transferring you to student services."

Well that was rude!

(Next up was a guys voice, it was not Lincoln, obviously not Mrs Hendrix... who the heck is at Hendrix's desk?) "Student services, how may I help you?" He simply said.

So I tried this again. "Um... yes... My name is W-xxxxxxx-k... I go to school here... and I..."

"I know who you are, son. What do you need." He interrupted me.

Rude!

Me: "If you know who I am, then you have a big advantage in this conversation."

"This is MacMillan speaking! Now please, I'm busy, so what do you need?"

(MacMillan? He hates me. This just got a LOT less fun!)

Me: "Okay! What the heck, I missed my bus and need a ride."

I heard typing on the keyboard. This sound was immediately followed up with the words, "You are out on an end-of-day Exeat, with Kennedy, to town, 'to purchase gear for weekend scuba diving' she says. At what point in this story does a 'bus' come in?"

My reply: "Yeah, Kennedy wanted to... make an additional stop before returning to the school. So he left me at the bus port, only the last bus that goes..."

"What aditional 'additional stop' could Kennedy possibly need, that would NOT include bringing you back home?"

Oy! He would ask that. I had think on my feet of some way to explain this, that didn't sound like Kennedy was off chasing tail. (Which there was a high degree of likelihood, that was actually what he was doing.)

Me: "Well... there's a mermaid on Park Avenue, and I..."

"STOP!!!" He interrupted! "Stop right there, son!"

(In my defense, in context, the mermaid was a statue, and had I gotten the chance to fully explain, it at least sounded pretty good in my head.)

MacMillan continued, "Are you at the bus hub, SAFE, right now?"

"I am."

"Near the ticket clerks?"

"Till they go home, in half an hour."

"listen to me VERY CARFULLY, son! Stay right where you are! I will send a teacher or senior, WHO'S FACE YOU WILL KNOW, to retrieve you! When you arrive on campus... do NOT check-in at student services! Return straight away to your dorm, DIRECTLY, let Hess know you've returned safely, and then STAY there... for the rest of the night! DO YOU UNDERSTAND?"

Me: "Yes, but what about dinner? I haven't had a ch...."

"JUST... just follow directions! Let me worry about the details!"

(OMG! Did he just ground me?)

It was far less than half an hour before Hitchcock (a senior and Mrs Hess's usual assistant that semester.) showed up. And he did indeed feed me.
