Subject: D-Day, June 6, 1944, Normandy Beach

Gents,
As VSPA's homepage, "This Day in Military History" notes, today is recognized for "June 6, 1944. WWII:
Normandy D-DAY: 1944 Jun 6: Operation Overlord was the invasion of n/w Europe during World War II by Allied forces. The operation began with the Normandy Landings on 1944 Jun 6 (commonly known as D-DAY), among the largest amphibious assaults ever conducted. Nearly 160,000 troops crossed the English Channel on 6 June, and more than 3 million troops had landed by the end of August.
D-DAY Allied Casualties: U.S.: KIA: 1,465; WIA/POW-MIA 5,138; U.K.: KIA/WIA/POW-MIA 2,700; Canada: KIA: 500; WIA/POW-MIA 621. Total: 10,264.
Axis Allied Casualties: Between 4,000 and 9,000 KIA/WIA/POW-MIA."

America takes National Holidays to recognize our national treasure in the Greatest Generation, and all others who have Fallen in our nation's battles--some 1,300,000 and more, with "Memeorial Day." And then we celebrate All veterans, living or dead, who have served our nation, with "Veterans Day."

Most of the country have turned these events into a BBQ day, which is fine (Veterans like BBQ), because there's always a veteran or two around to set the celebration's cause straight for the youngsters and some slightly forgetful eggheads (nicely, of course).

No holiday today. Just remembering, as a Son of the Greatest Nation, what our Fathers went through during their war when early on, horses still pulled caissons through the mud, some nations warriors used spears; and then American ended WWII by twice splitting the atom changing the world forever.
