Matteo,

Buddy, I appreciate the kind words offered in regards to my sketch writing ability because I, as any human will tell you if you inject 'em w/ truth serum, like praise, even if it's from someone who I really didn't appreciate writing harshly about several other writers here. In this particular post, you give CCS the ol' verbal Roto Rooter, and I'm thinking your missing something. First of all, CCS's posts in this thread hardly come across as angered or purposely challenging, which is apparently what you're begging for, given your wickedly acerbic retorts. But I got news for ya...he, along with most of the known human race, isn't a mind reader, nor is he obligated to challenge you. Lay off, man.

Now, for some real truth. Matteo, you may have started a trend, an ugly trend in some respects, of "no-holds-barred" reviewing, even though there are some oldies here that dispute even this claim. However, you have not changed or altered the overall temper of this site and its message board. People, in general, come here to post their work, hoping that other people might enjoy it. If there is any competitiveness or seriousness taken by anyone with respect to their work, it is a function of the universal notion that people want their art to be respected and liked, and oftentimes, this causes us to inadvertently do and say things to aggrandize ourselves, even at the expense of others. You don't have to take the blame and responsibility, or joy and pride, for that matter, for producing this because you didn't. Fortunately, you are not the progenitor of each writer's insecurities and fallacies. Blame human nature, God, mother earth, or whomever you pray to at night. (I prefer praying to my LFNY book...and occasionally a copy of the "Connect Four" rules)

Here's another truth: people have a hard time taking seriously the reviews of a person who has not proven themselves in the arena of sketch comedy. Simply put: we don't care as much about what you have to say. Here, you do not regularly post sketches, and the consensus regarding your previous work is that you are, at best, a writer who needs a ton of practice. See, I respect CCS and Jen and JP and whomever else reviews my work because I know they're putting their shit out there to be reviewed alongside mine. Also, I've seen each of them excel in ways that I might not be able to, so I know they are, in their own ways, unique and interesting talents with POV's much different from mine. You, on the other hand, have not proven such things, and therefore aren't going to elicit the same passion and fervor with your opinions.

The final truth: you can't come to a site and be a "crowner of kings", as you once so audaciously put it, until you've shown you are a king. Maybe Lorne Michaels, Adam McKay, John Cleese, or Bob Odenkirk...maybe they could hold such a lofty title, but not a dude who has wrote a grand total of 3 sketches. In essence, I don't mind that you come here and observe, post, and review. I'm always interested to hear what you say, and love your praises and suggestions, even if I don't always agree with the latter. However, don't expect me to become as impassioned with yours as I might with CCS's, Jen's, or Raulie's, because I know they have written excellently and have gained respect by simply writing pieces themselves. Assume this is the case with everyone else, and not that people are somehow fearful of you.

Don't stop posting, don't stop coming here...no one wants that. Just start writing, dammit. Practice, practice, practice...take the suggestions of others, and work on your craft. It won't take long, and you'll have some classics out there that will bring you the respect and dignity that will elicit those impassioned and challenging responses you so desperately seek.

JPIII
