Bite the bullet & clean house & keep building for a coaching staff & players for the future. I agree TANK, there needs to be some serious personnel upgrades with players and coaches and QB, otherwise we'll keep getting this impotent & inconsitent garbage. We had a bad year with injuries but that just further exposed areas of weakness (coaching and quality personnel depth). IMHO I think the best case scenario would be :
#1 - Jacksonville, Detroit, Cincinatti, someone out there "steals" Mooch away from us with some decent compensation (1st & 3rd this year, 2nd & 4th next year).
#2 - Trade Garcia for some good draft picks or players while he still has somthing left.
#3 - Sign Jake Plummer (QBOTF) & Boston (compliment for T.O.) from Arizona.
#4 - Draft for quality & depth on the DL, OL, TE, WR & DB.
#5 - Sign at least 2 quality veteran CB's.
#6 - Bring in Dennis Green or George Seifert to be head coach.
#7 - Bring in Ray Rhodes or someone comporable to him to run the defense.
#8 - Bring in a competent OC who can run a the Walsh WCO
#9 - Unload some dead weight : Stokes, Okeafor, Moran, Flanigan, Stubblefield?
If we could accomplish the above and infuse new talent from the draft, FA & players lost for the year like Winborn, Curtis, Terry Jackson, Jimmy Williams it might take us a while to get things going but at least we would have a good, young, quality foundation to build from.
Personally, I don't think Mooch, Mora, Knapp & Garcia are the answer to return the 49ers to what 49ers fans of old are used to. It will be interesting to see what happens.
