Subject: Mariucci's final game with the 49ers?

Rod, thanks for missing me! I am still trying to digest what happened.

Reasons to fire Mariucci -- the offense did not seem prepared to play to their ability at the beginning of the game. After that great opening interception, what was with those first three plays -- they seemed like they were the usual scripted 19 plays. After your defense makes a stand like that, the offense needs to make a statement. And they did -- the statement was that they were not ready for the Buccaneers. And down by so much right before half time after a great run by Hearst to the 40, why oh why would Mariucci pack it in and not try to at least get a field goal? What did they have to lose? My impression was that the team did not believe they belonged on the field with Tampa Bay -- that's coaching.

Reasons to keep Mariucci -- The Bucaneers are a very good team, and even if the 49ers had played well, they probably would have lost. The injury to Plummer (along with Webster sidelined) meant the team was playing without BOTH their starting CBs. You can't blame the coach for that. There were a number of flukey plays in the first half that all seemed to go the way of the Bucaneers. And the 49ers had a lot of key penalties which were, I think, a result of trying too hard, which happens with younger players.

Reasons to fire Garcia -- he seems to want to checkdown and/or break out of the pocket a little too early. It seems to me until it no longer matters, he tends to be too safe with his passes. When he is under pressure running out of the pocket, often he mis-throws. I mean even on 4th down he threw it out of the endzone!!!

Reasons to keep Garcia -- The last 20 minutes of last week's game and other previous performances like that. He certainly is capable of doing the job. The only question is his consistency and his decision making process. I really wonder if the 49ers built an offense around Garcia, would he be that much more efficient. It is obvious that there are times that Garcia doesn't seem inspired by the play-calling. Whose fault is that? Marucci for insisting on the game plan? Knapp for lack of creativity? Garcia for being bull-headed? Walsh for inventing an offense which may not utilize all of Garcia's skills?

The one thing that bothers me the most is how is it possible for a 49er offense to only score 6 points! There is something terribly wrong. After a while the 49ers were moving the ball well, but could not punch it in the red zone. This has happened many games this year.

What should the 49ers do? There are some needs on the team -- DL, WR, OL, DB -- that need to be filled. But I wonder which way the 49ers should go -- Garcia and Owens' wide open offense way or Mariucci's more methodical balanced way. Could the coaches adjust the game plan to include more of the wide open style? And if they do, could Garcia force himself to play that way for a whole game, or will he continue to play it safe until the team falls behind?

Do you think York, Donahue and Walsh know the answers to these questions?
