TIM: I read the Tribune article. I enjoyed it. Yes, I would like to see less predictable play calling. Those second and ten handoffs after an incomplete pass infuriate me. But, there was one telling sentence by the Tribune writer that makes me leery: "Design plays that allow Jeff Garcia and Terrell Owens to free-lance and do what they do best."
You see! That is what I have been trying to say. "Freelance" isn't West Coast offense. Freelance is Garcia Ball...wide open, CFL inspired, throwing on the run, with Garcia rushing for first downs (not running backs). Garcia Ball is what Garcia excells at. He is dynamite!
But, do we scrap the WCO for freelance? The offense would be more explosive...and probably score more, more consistantly. This isn't ball control, clock eating stuff. But, everything would be riding on Garcia staying healthy. Rattay can't do Garcia Ball. What do you say, TIM, should Walsh hire an offensive coordinator from the CFL to better utilize Garcia's talents?
Hodge went 4-0 last week? That is promising. But, did you realize the 49ers haven't covered the spread in nine weeks?
Considering that the Bucs' don't turn the ball over, it is imperitive that the 49ers don't make any mistakes, either. A muffed punt, or stripped ball would be brutal.
With regards to Dennis Green, I work with University Presidents...a group of people whose egos are rivaled only by NFL head coaches...and it is common for them to withdraw their names from consideration when it is apparent that someone else is going to get the appointment. It is a way of saving face. i suspect that is what went on in Jacksonville. Green wasn't going to get it, he could tell, so he withdrew his name rather than have the Jaguars say they preferred someone else.
Willie Shaw was fired by the Vikings. His defense was ranked 26th this past season, but it sure would be interesting to see his intimidating, smash mouth, aggressive defense that he built in Oakland repeated here.
I don't know why a coach would want the GM responsibilities. Look at Holmgren. He learned his lesson. It is just too much on one man's plate.
One of my great frustrations is with the LDE. And, i have grown increasingly disappointed with the lack of "big play" production out of Stubblefield and Young. It makes me wonder, what ever became of the notion of shifting Young to LDE? Green Bay fans I have talked to thought BY was a force on the end last year. Why not put Shaw or Flannigan or Moran in the middle with Stubby and have Young collapse the left side opposite Carter. It would free up Young from the double teams he is seeing inside. He has to be better than Okeafor or Engelberger. The backup DT's are better than Reggie McGrew and John Schlect were last year. Whether it is Flanigan or Moran or Shaw, I would hope they can hold their ground in the middle as well as Young has this year. Just a thought...I don't know why it was abandoned. The LDE just seems so undersized and overmatched all season.
At the least, it would give Brad Johnson's rusty mind and stiff back something to think about that he hadn't prepared for.
