Subject: America has always been like that

We are a country of snobs and arrogance. We think we know everything because we are powerful. We think we are advanced, when in many ways we are stunted; spiritually, sexually. We are loud, obnoxious, and ignorant. When I visited Europe, I was told many times that I was not like the American norm. I took this as a great compliment. Of course, a lot of young people visit Europe, too, in coming of age rituals which they spend in excesses. This gives us a bad name. Nevertheless, it is a typical stereotype. I think that many of my friends here would not be viewed in this way, for they are certainly not socially like most Americans, but the American stereotype exists for a very valid reason.

I can remember sitting in an outdoor cafe once in Holland. One table was being particularly loud and obnoxious. We turned and, who did we see? A group of Americans. It was not the last time I would see it, either. We are a cocky nation. We are innocent, too, in some ways. We have good qualities, too, but first impressions say a lot...
