The last real winner from taiwan they sent to represent was in 1999. In 2000, they sent a runner-up from their 97 pageant, that's ok I guess. But in 2001, they hand picked the girl to represent who also just happens to go to all the international competitions but have never competited in Taiwan. The organizers suck because there are soooo many beautiful and talented and smart and intelligent girls in taiwan. Do you think they'll send this year's representative from Miss chinese international to competite in Miss Universe? God I hope not!!!!! According to the secretary general of the organization responsible for electing this year's MU China, the MUO is having the intention of holding the world finals of Miss Universe in Shanghai, China in 2003. Through the pageant, MUO would like not only to introduce the concept of beauty pageant to China, but also give an impetus to the beauty-related industry, as Shanghai is the main gateway for foreign brands to enter the Chinese market. Preliminaries of the pageant are still underway in different parts of China. But it is said that the pageant is not publicized enough. My experience tells me too. It's been very hard to find any news, ads or whatsoever regarding the events from the Internet. I happened to read only 2,3 news related to it since Sep last year. Conventional beauty pageants had not been approved by the Chinese gov't. Back in 1994 an organization assigned by Miss World Org. had elected a representative thru a pageant namely 'Miss Orient' but failed to get the approval then. (I still vaguely remember how the winner looked from the newspapers. The lady that actually represented China that year was not her, probably a hand-picked model....she was in fact the 1st MW delegate from China; her picture can be seen in globalbeauties.com). In fact, Manhunt Int'l 2001 in Beijing China was held under the name of a modelling contest. And the pageant to which MUO has given the MU China rights is held in the name of "The 'Nice' Brand's Showcase of the Styles of the Ethnic Minorities of China in the New Millenniumm" Contest (what a long name!) But pageants of various topics & natures (for both men & women)like modelling contests, image ambassadors, Miss Internet, etc. have been flourishing in China for the past 10 years or so. So it's just about time for a conventional beauty pageant to be 'officially recognized'... should be very soon. Thanks for your attention! P.S. Actually Miss China World Bing Li was also hand-picked, from a group of contract models signed to the 'New Silk Road Model Inc.'(a major modelling agency in China) which is now MW's China franchise. The agency discovered her 2,3 years ago for her modelling potential. She then participated in '99 Ford World Model Contest & ended in Top 10. It is said that one of the reasons for choosing Bing Li was due to a French business acquaintance's comment on her 'international appeal', amongst other qualities. Such a tough decision...I think she should go to college and in the meantime, try out for more pageants like Miss Canada Universe/World. No, they usually don't do much training for any pageants. They will provide the necessities like clothes but that's about it. Not like Miss USA or Miss Ven they give their girls so much help. I think the pageant industry isn't that huge in asia. They will only do promotions that will bring in more profit like commericials or ribbon cutting. Miss China placed top 5 this year at miss world b/c she was stunning and she did it all on her own...I promise she received no help from anyone except support and advice from her friends and family at the most. Who is going to represent Taiwan, Singapore, China at Miss Universe? Is Bing Ling going to represent China??? She could have said "You don't see immediate results on every part of ur body. Losing weight does not happen overnight". Something like that is much better than "I dunno". Isn't Christie supposed to be "intelligent"? Like ya'll said. 3) For the talent. Judges wanna see something diferent other than ur typical singing/dance. FTV news showed a clip of Van playing the cello and i was impressed by the 5 seconds i saw. Points for da cello player unless u have an voice that can woo the judges. 4) I know that everyone has their own opinion and i don't mind some comments about Van "like chubby legs" but saying that she looked like she gotta nose job is rude just b/c ur mad that TO lost! 5) Van tried too hard to get attention. I would do that too. Why not? I'm not gonna sit and watch someone like Christie getting all the focus and bore myself. Not everyone gets to go to MCI and u go only once. Have fun, make the best out of it. 6) "Christie is so nice and perfect" Do u know her personally, huh? Same w/ Van how do u know she's fake? U can't get to know a person just by reading a few lines in a newpaper. Christie spoke highly about da other girls at MCI, it doesn't mean she's nice. The pageant was fixed, because just after the top 5 were announced, on the TVB.com MCI site, the winners were already announced... so it was clear that the winner was fixed as vancouver... she looks like a fool.. tvb is gonna wish they had picked Christie! What do you guys think of her?She's cool and very striking.Yeah,she's looks horrible in her official pic!But she is superb during the local pageant.I'm very sure of her placing among the top 5 but the top 3,it's a big challenge!if Miss HK make the final cut into the top 3,then she's doom!!!Look at last year,Miss Malaysia, Law Shiau Pyng,she is the best!Even better than Vivain Lau.However,she end up in the top 5.Well,good luck Angela!

The award was the SVELTE BEAUTY AWARD. The girls were remeasured and individually paraded down the cat walk, and apparently Miss Toronto weighed like 97 pounds or something. you can call the san francisco chinese chamber of commerce to ask for an application on miss chinatown usa. however, it's too late to compete this year. you have to have a talent and a sponsor who is willing to pay for the fees. it's a 2 week stay in san francisco, 1st week is mainly rehersal and 2nd week is visitations and the coronation ball and the parade. If you think Michelle Ye was not very pretty, your opinion is already more positive than mine. I found her quite annoying actually when she competed (and when she host the 2000 pageant in Las Vegas) and I didn't like her at all. I was very surprised that she won, perhaps because she looked too mature for her age. I was not impressed with the 2000 show: it was dry throughout, not too interesting. Sonija Kwok from HK won, when the first RU was LA was so much more beautiful. Second runner-up from Vancouver was quite attractive as well, prettier than Sonija, but L.A. ruled the stage. Yes, Miss Taipei was Wang Wan-Fei, who was at Miss Universe '99 and was 4th in Miss Asia Pacific '99 in the Philippines. The article says #5 Miss Toronto is the favorite esp. with her big chest of 35D. She also has a sweet smile that captures the audience and media attention.
The article talks about the vests and clothes they're wearing and visiting and taking photos at the zoo.
Even though they're wearing jackets, it's hard to cover up their fit bodies. No5 and No19 seattle's bodies are stand outs. They asked No5 if she's will wear the crown, she said "Actually, every girl has a chance to win, there are 19 winners from diff. parts of the world, everyone is confident"
No6 Montreal was scratched by a white tiger, she said she's fine and that every contestant is beautiful.
No12 Hong Kong says she misses her family and that the schedule is tight, they have to rehearse all day. She also said No5 has a great body. Miss Hong Kong says she's very happy and please with herself so far, every girl is from a different place and they are all very pretty. She's not giving herself too much pressure.

The article says that the 19 delegates continues to visit the zoo and use the zoo as background for photos. The ladies wear animal print shirts with black short skirts...however, a few of the contestants are a victim to Thick Legs. No19 Miss Seattle and No7 Miss Vancouver both have thick legs. Many people are also very shocked at Miss Toronto's big chest which obviously is her best asset thus far.
The articles says everyone's trying to keep up with the tight schedules with small naps taken on the bus.
