“Cool. I’m singing lead on “Boy Please” this time anyway. It’s my fav-“
“Um, come back again Ly?” Roshay asked walking over to the microphone set up along with Lyla.
“I said I’m singing lead this time.”
“Baby girl please. I don’t think so,” Roshay corrected licking on her lollipop.
“No Roshay because at last practice YOU sang lead when I was suppose to. Remember?”
“So. You had a sore throat, but it’s still my turn, my day and I’m gon’ get it. Just go ahead and sing harm with Nicole,” Roshay demanded coming over to lean over on my shoulder, but I wasn’t paying much attention. I was thinking about Reggie.
“Naw, don’t put Nicole. That’s you and Lyla. Not me. Yall,” Nicole replied sitting on the stool. I let out a sign. I was sick of hearing them argue about this. “Are yall done yet? Fifteen minutes to waste with yall arguin’. Who gon’ do it or what? Or do I have to choose?” I asked standing up looking at Roshay and Lyla.
“Shit, let her go do it then. I don’t feel like hearin’ her black mouth no way. Bob Marley lookin’ ass,” Lyla mumbled.
“Wha, what you say? You just better sit yo’ country yella ass down before I have to say somethin’ I might regret,” Roshay warned getting away from my shoulder staring right into Lyla’s face. Not a good sign.
“Both of yall. Please, shut up. We all best friends like our inspirations. Now, would B2K appreciate yall bickering like this? I mean, soon enough one of yall gon' have to quit being lead and we can only have one and we'll all change up singing parts. Dang, don’t be wastin’ time let’s get to work,” I enforced and we finally started singing. It sounder great and we started making changes to our song “Boy Please.” We thought it was a hot song and hopefully other people would to. We’d all liked the song because we wrote it together and plus it related to each of us in ever way. We each wrote a pretty good verse of the song getting help from Lyla’s brother and Roshay’s dad. I wrote the catch and the rap myself so I’m glad about that.
All of a sudden things were going downhill. I had wanted to hear Lyla sing the main verse now. I love Roshay because she’s my best friend that I’ve know forever. One big deal about it is because she’s dark skinned. I mean she’s dark, but the girl ain’t purple and she’s a beautiful girl. She’s fun and funny and the girl can really cook. She ears braids all the time. That’s hwy Lyla made that ignorant comment. She even braids her own hair and everybody else’s too. She got them in the smaller version of the jumbo braids way before people use to wear the kro-shay and freestyle braids.
Lyla is of course is light skinned. She use to be lighter than that, but she a street runner in the summer and has a bit of a permanent tan. She has sort sandy brown hair, so she’s usually known for wearing weave ponytails and such. From time to time Ro calls her ponytail “bush barn” because it look like she don’t never want to comb that mess.
Nicole, she’s just there and around and much like my little sister. She’s my skin tone, an ebony brown and has curly hair and I have straight hair just about shoulder length. She Indian and black. Her mom’s Indian. Straight up. Her dad is black, but he’s from California and he was down in Brownsville, Texas, I think, I always forget, so that’s where he met Nicole’s mom. She’s the youngest of us at 15, but I’ve known her for a while and I know she has a great voice. The rest of us are 16 and I’m the oldest.
Did I mention I of course am the founder of Dynasty? I think I did. Yup. I was singing one day, yes I can sing and Darius told me I should try to put a group together. First thing I did was call up Roshay and we got Lyla and Nicole. It wasn’t because we were all best friends, but I thought we’d all be the best choice because we all had a musical tracked mind. Plus, we we’re all big fans of B2K and we’re inspired by their hard work and fam. Okay okay we’re maybe crazy and obsessed. What I’ve always learned is, “Why watch them when you can be one of them?” and so I follow that strongly these days.
I know I shouldn’t have mentioned anything. I knew it. Now, I’m stuck with this mess.
“You know, Macy is right. I have a stronger-“
“Breathe! I got better vocals that you Lyla. Macy, what is wrong with you?” Roshay interrupted. Lyla and Roshay just staring and me and Nicole went and sat back down in the back. Once again, spotlight on me. They always do this.
“I just wanted to hear her sing lead Ro. It’s not a big deal. Why you trippin’?” I asked walking pass them over to the other lawn chair next to where Nicole was sitting.
“I’m singing it. I’ve practiced it more than she has anyway. Let’s settle the dispute and leave the verse to me,” Roshay replied crossing her arms confidently waiting for someone to protest. Usually, no one did until now.
“Screw that Ro. You’r emy girl and all, but I surely don’t think you should be lead. It’s all about being seen and known and that’s just not you girl, it’s not. I’m not backing down…” Lyla replied. “Oh yeah? So, why you think you should be lead huh? Why? I do have a better vocal variety than you. I mean, you, of course have a great voice, but I’m a bit better. I love you Ly, but this verse ain’t for you. Yall agree right Macy, Ni?”
We was quiet. I never answer they questions when they in an argument it just turns into a worse situation.
“It’s…” Lyla started. My heart skipped and beat and knew Lyla was going to go there. She knew I didn’t wanna go there yet. She was going to go there. She going to tell Ro about the conversation we had on the phone. “Well?”
“It’s you. Ugh, I ain’t gon’ go there just forget it. This isn’t going to work…” Lyla said. I KNEW IT! Lyla is a damn mess. She already den told her a bif of it and was going for the kill. I had to do something.
“Forget it Ro. You got the verse aiight? It’s coo. Now, let’s jus-“
“No! You must know what she gon’ say, huh? Nicole? What is going on?” Roshay asked looking more confused than mad because it was all basically a plot. A big mixed up plot, and we shouldn’t have done it. We should have left it as is.
“Ro, it’s like this okay? I mean, I don’t mean to be started nothing because I been holding it in and I really just need to let you know how I feel,” Lyla began sitting down on the ground and asking us to make a circle with us. What kind of shit is that? We ain’t five year olds. I wasn’t going to argue because I guess t had to be said now or later and I guess the time was now. It wasn’t even meant to be like this.
“Listen, I talked to Macy on the phone one night and we were discussing Dynasty. Straight up from my heart I was concerned for our image because you’re the only dark skinned girl and well I think that’s a down fall” Oh shit. She flat out said it. Roshay didn’t say anything.
“Basically, I feel that’s why 702 is like so messed up when Kameelah was there. I just doesn’t work and well 3LW are pretty hyped because they have a light skinned girl as the lead and that’s pretty catchy. Flat out, I don’t believe you should be lead because of that. Image means a lot in this business and I don’t feel like…it’s something we should change and that things need to be the way they are. Flat out. That’s it,” Lyla finished looking from me to Nicole to Roshay. Roshay just nodded her head and looked at me. “So, you felt this way to?”
“Um, well you know after the discussion I had with Lyla I kind of understood where she was coming from and…”
“Basically, she agrees with me and I think that you should too,” Lyla cut in trying to answer for me, but that’s one thing nobody can do for me. I can speak for myself. “No, I feel like she has a point you know? Then again, we can always be different, but I was going to-“
“But you didn’t Macy. You went and told Lyla and didn’t even discuss this bull to me when I seem to be a big mistake in Dynasty. What the fuck? What is wrong with you people? Lyla?” Roshay asked seemingly upset. “No. We love you Shay and I think that’s why I feel as if I should have told you because I feel strongly about our image. What’s more than image?”
“Your damn music Lyla. I mean why don’t we just be models then if we’re worried about looks and image and all that mess. I mean it’s just really hurting and ridiculous to know my friends feel this way about me. I mean, what’s worse than hearing my friends don’t want me to be the lead singer because I’m darker than the rest of you. I’ve never heard of any such thing and never been more embarrassed in my whole life. I’ve had to deal and feel this shit when I was younger, but to grow up and see that my best friends…you know what? Forget it. I don’t want to discuss this alright. Being Kameelah is my cousin I mean I didn’t think you guys thought she was obviously a bad part of 702. Man, I’m out,” Roshay said getting and I tried to say something, but for the first time I was actually speechless and didn’t have not one word to say.
