In reply to: Alexis/Monet 's message, "The Mountain Pass" on 16:16:10 08/21/03 Thu

Jeff hesitated, looking with trepidation at the two towering stones that marked the entrance to the mountain pass. Beyond, the path melted into shadow.

"Er...shouldn't we stop for the night?" he asked.

"Don't be such a baby," Angie called back, already striding up among the rocks. "We can at least get a little way into the pass. It'll take all day tomorrow to reach the top, and it'll be awfully cold while we're up there, so we might as well put as much distance away now as we can."

Jeff sighed, brushing an errant strand of auburn hair out of his eyes. Then his gaze fell upon Alexis as she stood waiting for him, and suddenly the mountains seemed of little consequence.

"Alright," he said, "let's get this over with."

He passed quite close to Alexis as he stepped between the stones, and his heart gave a little leap in his chest. She was so beautiful, so kind and understanding of his shortcomings, and he found it quite easy to forget about her alliance with the Cheysuli-demon, and the times she had lost her temper with him, when the light of adventure shone in her crystal eyes and she turned that brilliant smile upon him.

And so it happened that Jeffrey Gage Ryan entered the pass of the Forbidden Mountains, and every step he took was for the sake of a moon-bright girl with a tiger hidden beneath her skin.

Angie snorted, and her dark eyes smoldered as she squinted to make out the path ahead. The boy was growing more annoying with every smile Alexis gave him. Wonder what he'll say when he finds out she's Cheysuli, she thought to herself, and felt both guilt and wry anticipation at the idea. He's building his world around a lie. When the truth finally comes out, he'll be crushed.

She smiled to herself suddenly as a truly devilish thought occurred to her. Encourage it. They don't care about you, and they never will. When all this is over, one way or another, they'll abandon you. No reason why you can't have a little fun in the meantime.

::Hey, Alexis,:: she sent in a perfectly normal voice. ::Don't let Fuzzy back there trip in the dark. He hasn't got your cat eyes, remember.::

Indeed, Jeff seemed to be having a little difficulty finding his footing in the deepening darkness.

::You might want to give him a hand.::
