See, I go away for a short break in NYC and I miss all the fun.

I have no idea whether or not fixed or freewheeling produces the most drag, as the good professor says, both produce drag but of different types. Who knows?

What I do know is that the wear from allowing my prop to freewheel for thousands of miles would have been considerable. Quite apart from the gearbox bearings you have the sterngland and the cutlass bearing to consider too.

As far as restricting the movement of the rudder goes, this is a standard feature of all 501s and I'm not convinced we lose that much by it. However I'd need a considerably larger budget before I would have considered a folding prop, particularly the three bladed types. I'm sure there must be savings in drag to be had but given how much most people use their boats it seems a bit dubious. When I was sailing a lot I would do around 1200-1500 miles a year and I still wouldn't have had a folding prop as my first choice of investment.
