      • ND compared to UAB - I agree. I was hoping that they would choose some of the "little guys" like they did some years back. Buffalo and Holy Cross have solid arguements but lack the big conference like bubble teams NC State or Iowa. On another note, how can they justify Iowa over Indiana?         • I think the Iowa over Indiana boils down to the entire season. Iowa ended 21-11 (OOC SOS/RPI of 67/11), Indiana ended the season 15-13 (OOC SOS/RPI of 11/116). This proves once again that it does not pay to overschedule in the OOC, plain and simple. St. Joe's with an OOC SOS/RPI of 7/129 is another example of being hurt by not winning out of conference with too tough a schedule. 14-2 in conference is going to get you nowhere if you go 3-8 OOC.           • If St. Joes beats URI at URI on ESPN the other day they finish 9-1 to end the season. That would have made them the last team out. As for the Hawks OOC.. I never thought in the begining of the season that Drexel, Bucknell, Penn, ODU and Villanova were killers but if they win two of those games they would have made it... The Iowa/IU problem, to me, was that they couldn't have justified taking one over the other and therefore neither should have made it. You can't have it both ways - tough OOC got penalized here.             • You are absolutely right J92, you cannot have it both ways, but somehow the NCAA Selection Committee has it both ways every year. For one team they will argue the conference record and for the next they will argue the out of conference. In my opinion they do not look at SOS all that much, at least not in the OOC so it and as long as teams do not load up solely on cupcakes, it pays to schedule winnable games. I think what hurt St. Joe's the most was that it was hard to argue that they had a rough start when the loss to Penn and drubbing by Nova (a good team) were during the conference schedule and they also lost to URI late, albeit right after the Temple goon-gate situation.           • JoDete, Iowa got in over Indiana because outside of the league, they beat Louisville, Texas (w/ Tucker), Iowa State, and Texas Tech, while outside the league, Indiana beat Oral Roberts, while losing to a number of real good teams including UNC, UConn, and Kentucky. I think you are relying way too much on the actual numbers. Iowa's 4 wins outside the league to Indiana's none (quality wins) is the reason why they are in and Indiana is out despite finishing 3 games back.             • I think you are trying to prove a point to the wrong person. I was the one explaining why Iowa got in, not why they did not deserve to be in. Their overall season record is better than Iowa's and their out of conference strength of schedule and RPI are solid enough to get them in. Maybe all the numbers I provided confused you into thinking that I was arguing that Indiana should have been included, but I was not. My ultimate point is that the committee is showing that it does not pay to have a top 15 to 20 OOC SOS if you do not win. It therefore makes more sense to have an OOC SOS close to or below 100 with a few added victories. Both Indiana and St. Joe's are proof of that, though GW getting a 12 seed makes me wonder a bit about that b/c it looks like they would have been out had they not won the A-10.     • St. Joe's played a brutal OOC without their best player and were adjusting to losing two players to the NBA. Then they go out and win the A-10 regular season and get to the finals of the A-10 tourney. That merits a bid over a UAB. And they were certainly more deserving than ND, a team that stumbled into the finish lines losing two games that could have gotten them a bid against UCLA at home and a terrible Rutgers team on a neutral floor.   • Look further up for a post titled A-10 POST-SEASON INVITES by Joe S. ' 58, it gives a beakdown of NCAA and NIT invites for the past decade. There are 2 instances where we sent 5 teams and 2 where we sent 1, multiple instances of us sending 3 and 4. It may average out to 3, I have not done the math.
