• I wasn't really thinking about doing a "blue-out"up there. I want to see us do one at Palumbo. Considering that we can't half fill Palumbo, I'm not very optimistic that we would get many fans to travel to a remote place like State College, to see us play a very mediocre opponent.   • I'm thinking of Lehigh Valley folk, NJ folk, Amish area folk, Maryland folk, NY state folk, etc. It's a Saturday, it's a (former) traditional rival, it's a winnable game.       • I don't know about coming from Maryland, but access to State College has been greatly improved by the completion of segments of new Interstate 99. Be careful to follow the road signs if you use GPS which doesn't seem to have the updates and will try to send you the old way. The weather should still be decent then, thousands of good seats available, good food and drink, it's a party town, winnable but competitive game, what's not to love.       • I come to games at the AJP from Maryland several times a year, and I will also make the trip to State College for this game. I usually pick one week out of the season and follow the team for each game that week. This past year was St.Joes at AJP, Temple in Philly, and GW in DC (although I missed that game because of the snow, even though it was the closest to where I live...lol).     • Really? I just had to go out Route 22 and about 3/4s of the road between Murraysville and Ebensburg was still under construction. Also, a year ago I needed to travel on I-99 towards State College, and they STILL were working around the pyrite vein that they struck that polluted the area water sources.   • While admittedly the Dukes' playing Penn State will not carry the stature of an opponent such as Duke, Villanova (who owes us a home game from way back, as I recall) or Ohio St., I view it as a positive step in improving the Dukes' non-conference schedule. Even though PS is not a b-ball power in the Big 10, the addtion of a team to the schedule from a conference that has an RPI rating higher than the A-10's, is generally an improvement over playing a team from a conference with an historically low RPI rating, such as the NEC.     • PSU's RPI ( 194 ) from last year would be lower than the RPI of 6 of our ( 2009-10 ) non-con opponents and be higher than 7 of our non-con opponents. Generally speaking the RPI's of top teams in the lower level conferences ( Iona , Fairfield, Sam Houston St. ) would be better than the RPI's of bottom feeders in power conferences (i.e. Indiana, Iowa, PSU )due to the way RPI is calculated.       • The average fan is more excited to see DU play Penn State than Bobby Mo, just because of the recognition factor. Granted, some would believe that JoePa doubles as the hoops coach, but so what? I'm happy to see the rivalry rekindled.       • I was aware of Penn State's lower RPI from last year. I don't believe that PS will always be at the bottom of the Big 10. My point is that Penn State makes a more natural opponent than any of the schools you mentioned, perhaps with the exception of Bobby Mo. (Didn't the Dukes with a .500 record have a higher RPI than NCAA Tournament participant Bobby Mo?) Furthermore, Penn State will out draw any of those teams when the Dukes play them at home.         • DU final RPI was 114 - so slightly better than RMU ( 129 ). If the goal is to max-out the RPI effective scheduling of upper level teams in lower conferences is usually preferable to bottom teams in power conferences. If the goal is to draw fans PSU is the call over Fairfield ( i.e. ) no doubt. Have a hard time seeing PSU elevate to the upper levels of the Big-10 in the next 2 years. Questionable, at least to me, is if they can elevate to the middle of the Big-10 standings. I suspect Indiana ( equally poor in 2009-10 ) has a good chance to rebound faster than PSU.           • Your theory of scheduling assumes that one can predict that certain teams, some of which you mentioned, from conferences with low RPI ratings will have equal or better RPIs than they had in the previous season. I believe that one must schedule at least some teams from conferences with RPIs better than the A-10. Frankly playing at least one Big 10 team a year can't be all that bad.             • Predicting which teams in the lower conferences will have "Helpful" RPI ratings ( within a certain range ) would seem to me to be somewhat easier than trying to predict the major conferences ( bottom feeders ) teams RPI's. Remember that 25% of your RPI is based on your opponents / opponents. To predict accurately in either scenario ( bottom of Big 10 vs. power team of a lower echelon league ) is very difficult. As I said, schedule PSU as some benefits will accrue, but do so with the understanding of where we hope DU is in the "Success cycle" that PSU will probably not benefit your RPI.
