  • True. It is a long way until Oct. 15, 2011. Hopefully he does indeed sign with DU and he has his academics in order. Spring recruiting is a different animal. Teams lose out on prospects in the fall and players leave in the spring so there are openings at BCS schools that need filled. • After reading the Trib story again his coach calls us the front runner. Then he says he's going to sign but not till spring. He didn't say he was signing with us.   • I agree. The quote starts with "they're in great shape"...of course one way to read that is that the team will be in great shape basketball-wise with a player of this caliber.     • That's quite a bit of speculation, isn't it? Especially about a coach that you know nothing about save for a few quotes over the past two days. Isn't it also possible that this coach is looking out for a kid who verballed to the first place he visited, and just wants him to slow down a bit? I'd probably be telling the kid the same thing -- why don't you wait and see what other schools come offering during this, your SECOND season, in which you have yet to play a game. Look, for all I know the guy is a scum as you describe, but I don't see anywhere where he said anything about them "not going through" him. If he is mentoring the kid (as a good coach should do) then I see nothing wrong with him saying, "son, there may be a school that's a better fit for you, maybe you should visit some other places just to be sure."           • ...and just to be clear, I think it's possible that not a single person in this story did anything "wrong." The coaches recruited and got a verbal from the kid (that's not binding, BTW), Mackall got the info, followed up with the current coach who seemed to confirm it (miscommunication), and the current coach went to the kid and said "I think you should be more patient before making a final decision."           • Slim, that quote is in the blog that is linked above. It did strike me a bit funny too. No offense to the coach, but Duquesne is dealing with the player and his family, and that is how it should be. Unless we have violated some type of NCAA recruiting rule, which doesn not appear to be the case, then he is off base. And if he steers the kid away from DU because his ego is out of joint, that word will get around among the coaches too. What's important, all the way around: Do the right thing. AND The player likes the school enough to say I DO- I am assuming this happened. It is the player and his family's decision. That's the way it worked for me.
