Angel/Angelus are the same guy, always have been. Angelus would think his leash had been taken off, but I don't know. I see Angelus as someone who has felt he has been cheated of something, and if he can't have exactly what he wanted, hell, kill everything that moves.

The Prodigal

Dad: It's a son I wished for a man instead God gave me you! A terrible disappointment.

Angel: Disappointment A more dutiful son you couldn't have asked for. My whole life you've told me in word, in glance, what it is you required of me, and I've lived down to your every expectations, now haven't I.

Dad: That's madness!

Angel: No. The madness is that I couldn't fail enough for you. But we?ll fix that now, won't we.

Those two were in a contest where the rules were unspoken and the results deadly. Liam was drinking himself into an early grave, he had given up as he felt his potential wasn't ever going to realized. His father couldn't understand what the heck his kid wanted, and wasn't interested in listening. Then Darla hit the pub circuit.

Darla knew one thing, how to pick the monster of the week, and she got that and more in Liam. Angelus was not born when he clawed out of his grave, it took an initiation to become reborn.

Angel: Strange. - Somehow you seemed taller when I was alive.

Dad flattens himself up against the wall: Lord, bind this demon now.

Angel: To think I ever let such a tiny, trembling thing make me feel the way you did.

Dad crosses himself: I pray ye, give me your protection, Father.

Angel: You told me I wasn't a man. You told me I was nothing. and I believed you. You said I'd never amount to anything. Well, you were wrong. You see, father - I have made something out of myself after all.

The contest was won as far as the reborn Angelus was concerned. The person who made him feel insignificant was no longer capable of saying another word, ever. And Darla the crafty gal she was, knew it. So, instead of getting a minion, she created something even she couldn't totally control. But like his dad, Darla knew where to stick it to Angelus.

Angel: Now I've won.

Darla: You're sure?

Angel: Of course. I proved who had the power here.

Darla: You think? (she's about to kick him where it counts)

Angel: What?

Darla: You?re victory over him took but moments.

Angel : Yes?

Darla: But his defeat of you will last life times.

Angel: What are you talking about? He can't defeat me now.

Darla: Nor can he ever approve of you. In this world or any other. - What we once were informs all that we have become. The same love will infect our hearts ? even if they no longer beat. Simple death won't change that.

Angel: Love - Is this the work of love?

Darla : Darling boy. - So young. Still so very young.

Darla, Darla, Darla...whose heart ended up beating? But, she's right and got Angelus right where it hurt. He could no longer see that his longing was for his father's approval. With that chance gone forever, Angelus went about making sure everyone, everyone! suffered. Now, that's ART! At least the deluded Angelus thought so when he created Dru, killed his way into the number one spot of evil. Once the soul got put back in, he still had Angelus there, cept some unliving experience was seen through a conscience.

And as life would have it, the tables would be turned on Angel when he had a son he could love, yet be unable to be understood by. I think Angelus said that Holtz's wife repeated on him...too bad the same could be said about the soulled Angel who seemed to find life an unexpected trial. Connor is the redemption for Angel as he has the chance to have that part of himself live on, live in a way that Angel could never have enjoyed. He can't take away the past, but he could send some hope into the future...which if the WB had allowed would have become more and more interesting.
