Subject: What do the potentials have forced upon them?
In reply to: Sunshine 's message, "Re: Willow's Apologist" on 11:24:33 10/27/05 Thu

Dreams is the only argument you can make. But they likely already had dreams.

Nothing else is forced on them that is in any way different from the lives they were leading earlier, except that they don't have to be wimpy suckies if they don't want to be. They are still free to live their lives. Just because they get slayer strength, doesn't automatically mandate their participation in the defunct Watcher's Council's cause. They can do what they want with the power inherent in them just as they could before. That the power inherent in them is enhanced doesn't seem to me to change that freedom, except perhaps to open it wider.

But I think you have hit exactly why the addiction theme was necessary in season 7. Your description of the victim syndrome run amok describes exactly dysfunctional Buffy's attitude towards her life in season 6. She crawls out of the grave when she gets past that attitude. Since the show is ultimately about Buffy and the big bad struggels are supposed to relate back to Buffy, a discussion of only abuse of power would not have done the trick. Buffy's evasion of responsibility was the point, her wish to not live in the world she actually was living in, not that she thought she was too powerful.
