Subject: Open registries

Rightfully so, the working ability of the Boerboel has always been a strong issue but I notice that the registry systems are not. The fact that a breeder like Anasha has developed a database with all of the different bloodlines and that the organizations do not have this, is confusing to me.

Is there a good reason as to not having the pedigrees from the different orgs. open to the public?

Wouldn't it be a great benefit if the database also had all of the health problems that are in the pedigrees. Even though I can see why many breeders would be opposed to this in the beginning, I also believe that they will benefit from it the most. Afterall, isn't breeding toward a better Boerboel the priority rather than breeding a better line than such and such? I think that most would agree that no matter who you are and how well your breeding program is going to be, you will always have genetic problems to correct in your lines. So wouldn't it be great to have more information to know which lines have what problems and which ones you can introduce into your line?

Melinda, in one of your posts, you mentioned Dr. Padgetts book. As you know he goes into detail and is a great advocate of the open registry system in his book and his seminars. He has helped other breeds develop this system and they are succeeding. Do you also advocate this open registry system?

My personal example is this. I spend two years looking into this breed on and off and being careful before jumping into it. I attended the clinic last year and for some reason I was hooked and so I started to look into it very seriously and ask as many questions as I could. I was disappointed with the lack of quality information available and decided in the end to take a risk with someone that I had met and felt that I could trust. I also knew that it was essentially a shot in the dark and that hopefully I made the best guess that I could. To me that should not be good enough. As a buyer, wouldn't it be great to be able to study the lines in depth instead of taking a shot in the dark?

So to all of the others please remember that whether you are new to this breed or an experienced breeder, your opinion no matter what it may be, helps shape the future of the breed.
