Dan,

I do agree with the idea of having all the information available. Had I known then, what I know now about certain dogs pedigrees that were purchased origninally by Randy when he went to South Africa, we would not have purchased those particular dogs. That information would have been great to have as a new person and would have saved me a lot of money. Now with respect to that thought here's the kicker...no one breeds perfect dogs. The problem with a totally open registry is that the information is not used to better the breed but to slander and defame the breeders who participate in it. That is the biggest problem. Also when you have multiple registries going on you end up with "Well those dogs are from the XYZ registry and you can see all the defects in them by their data base. Our dogs don't have those problems".... That is the issue that you end up with. I had DNA pulled from all my dogs and it went to Texas A&M for genetic research. Why? Because we need new and better testing methods to help unravel the HD issue, vaginal hyperplasia, entropion and ectropion issues with the breed. We need to know how it is passed along from parent to pup. Yes I know there has been tons of research done with HD but not with Boerboels. I also want to know what makes this breed of dog live so long as compared to other large breeds that are dead at 8 years old like my American Bulldog Max. That to me is totally unacceptable. I do agree with the open registry idea I don't agree with the way the information can be used. I am going to South Africa this summer for historical research. I want the historical information on the breed. I need to know to make better and more informed decisions about breeding these dogs. No one needs to think they know it all about these dogs. They don't I can assure you. There is much more and we are barely scratching the surface of what we know about this breed. I will be there for 5 weeks doing research to bring back to share with everyone. It's not going to be "Top Secret" information. We all need this information to do a better job at what we are doing. Open registries are a good source of information, but the way the information is actually used is usually a very bad thing. Melinda
