 I agreed that the being 'head' as being understood by most Christians are actually very sexist.

Yeap. The role of husband and wife within marriage should depend greatly on their ability and reality. If the 'wife' is more decisive and better in leadership, wife should lead the family.

But I have also read that the term 'head' mean that the husband has the obligation to 'defend' his family by being the 'head' to face anyone who threaten the family. The 'head' mean 'heading in battle'.

Of course, that is sexist too. If the wife is better than the husband in battle, the responsibility should fall on the wife instead of the husband.

Getting a little more background on the culture practice of the time. The wife could be a 'teenager' while the husband could be 10+ years her senior. A lot of sexist 'scripture' could be better understood with the age difference and the lack of opportunity for women to be educated at that time.

The sexism in scripture reflected the 'culture' of the time and would no longer be applicable in a gender equality society of our time.
