Subject: The Hits just keep on coming. My Husband, Mike got laid off from work yesterday. It's the first time he has been without a job in 40 yrs. He's wondering around trying to figure out what to do next. He is a diabetic and has depression. He's afraid no one will hire him at 59 yrs. with his health problems. But, he did up date his resume today and started sending them out. We both need health insurance. I'm on Disiably after working for 38 yrs. Life has been tough since 2007 and doesn't seem to be getting better. Thanks for listening to me vent.

[> yeah and they keep trying to tell us the economy is in an upswing- I can't help but wonder what world do the people making these calls live in - anyhow- it is a frightening thought but I've had my neighbor in sales lose his job a couple of times at over 50 years of age and both times he got good replacement work - took several months each time - but he did get it - so there are a few folks out there who appreciate the experience - it's just a matter of finding them. Good luck, -- chris k, 06:05:12 03/31/11 Thu [1]

[> [> I agree with you chris. How can the economy be on an upswing. This last week, my hospital laid off many employees, eliminated positions in my department, and strongly encouraged people to take the early retirement. So sad. Then my brother-in-law was laid off after 38 years with his company. He's 61 and where does he get another job. They didn't even offer him severance. -- Martian Barb will pray for you, Cathy F and your husband., 06:10:18 03/31/11 Thu [1]

[> [> [> Oh, my hospital's lay offs came only 6 months after opening a brand new state of the art new hospital! My department, L&D was not a part of the new addition. [> All I can say, CathyF is to try to keep positive and to support each other to keep yourselves calm and don't lose HOPE and faith. inside -- mj, 11:32:43 03/31/11 Thu [1]

Take as good of care of your health as possible -- eating right, getting enough exercise, and stay socially connected, somehow. Don't let yourselves get too isolated from friends and family networks. Sometimes, through the church or friends of friends, new opportunities arrive. I've also had to learn to keep a strict budget again -- after YEARS of living the good life. So many people who we thought were our friends dropped us -- they were only interested in the money and hobnobbing when we were the 'IT' people! Bah! I've actually enjoyed simplifying and budgeting. Oh, don't think it was easy for me, but I have learned through all of this what and who REALLY matters in life. I wish you well and will pray for you and yours.

[> Americorps has a hiring program for mature workers that, I understand, includes health benefits. Also there are federally funded Senior Employment Programs for persons over the age of 55. -- Araninda, 08:57:36 04/01/11 Fri [1]

[> [> Really? I had not heard that. I have now heard of several "mature" workers who have been laid off or not had contracts renewed. When unemployment is low again, I hope these companies can't find people to work. -- TH, 19:48:21 04/01/11 Fri [1]

[> [> [> [> Yes, but based on their website, they want people to work for minimum wage. I guess if you don't need income but need health insurance, then it's a good deal, but most people I know need more income than minimum wage. -- TH, 19:30:57 04/03/11 Sun [1]

[> [> [> [> [> I think it's actually below minimum wage in most cases. It's more like living expenses - at least it was when my son was in Americorps for 2 years. That said, everyone I know who has been in Americorps has managed to use the experience to find a real job at the end of their service. It's a great idea for young people, IMO. -- Ann, 20:06:13 04/03/11 Sun [1]

I can only speak for Florida, but while you're on unemployment, you have to "claim" any wages you make, whether from part time work, temp work, whatever. If your gross wages are less than the amount of your unemployment benefit, then unemployment pays the difference. The problem is that there is only income tax on unemployment compensation. On any true wages earned, you have to also pay social security and medicare. So you could actually end up with your net pay being LOWER for the week if you work.

It only pays to work while on unemployment if you can be sure that you earn MORE than unemployment--and not just slightly more--it has to be enough to cover the extra payroll taxes. Otherwise you might as well just stay home and get the unemployment and enjoy your free time. As bad as that is, that is the way the system works, unfortunately. They want you to look for work, yet you are penalized financially when you do find something small.

Also, there is the added problem that if you are working, you have less time to look for a better job, less free time to go to interviews, etc. So you could end up stuck in a job that is nowhere near enough to keep your bills paid.

Isn't that disgusting? The DIS-incentives for people to work are ASTOUNDING! When you can collect more money from the government for staying HOME, then something is incredibly wrong!

I have a friend who owns a growing local business. He said that since the Recession started in 2008/9, people come in all the time looking for work, take a business card and leave w/o leaving a resume, setting up an interview or anything. All they have to do is say they "looked" and staple a business card to "prove" it. They really don't want a job, they just need to jump thru the hoops so they can get their next government check.

[> [> LOL- that reminds me of how I met Glenn Morchower's father. Mr. Morchower retired from his family owned business. After being home only two weeks - his wife presented him with a key to his own office - across town from her house and across the hall from my husband!! lol He would come in every day at 10 - talk on the phone - read the paper - watch the news- and go home around 3 or 4pm - lol. -- chris k, 20:37:50 04/02/11 Sat [1]
