This kind of thing is nothing new. Just look at (first example I could think of at the top of my head), the soccer world cup. You have qualifiying rounds on all continents, and only so many teams per continent make it to the final tournament. Then what do you get? Powerhouses like England need to stay home, Saudi Arabia qualifies (just examples!!!!), all in an effort to make the tournament more diverse. Makes good tv, but not the best sport. Oh, btw, I don�t think this has anything to do with political correctness, it�s a money issue. The more athletes from all over the globe compete for medals, the more people watch. The fewer countries are dominant, the less interest is there in the outher countries, the less sponsor money you get/tv rights you can sell. I was looking it up, and I think it was THREE until 2004, or something. Not sure. And even if it's about money, it's still horrible. Oh, hey, you're the 3rd best in the world, but of the 24 who will compete for the medal, you'll be sitting out so Uzbeckistan can watch their 100th best in the world athlete on tv in prime time so their Uzbekistani widget sellers can have more air time for their ads. The only thing is with Soccer and other team sports like that, at least they all compete for the spots in rounds, like with the world cup. If you didnt sort out winners from certain continents, then soccer would have to start weeks before. But to not even be given a chance due to a stupid rule is crazy when the competion is right there and you have to earn it just like some of the 3rd world countries in team sports..
