I can’t believe that no one has commented on the Olympics! -- doc, 15:54:04 08/21/08 Thu [13]
I’ve really been enjoying the games, although it has thrown my bedtime schedule totally out of whack. For me, the first week was by far the most exciting. The swimming events were absolutely great! What’s not to like about a 41-y.o. mom coming back to compete against kids ½ her age, & winning 3 silver medals to boot! And Michael Phelps’ 8 gold medal…absolutely amazing!!! And even more important, he seems like such a nice kid. I loved how much credit & respect he gave to his mother for his work ethic & success.

This second week hasn’t been nearly as exciting, but you have to give credit to both the men & the women’s team sports. The one big disappointment this Olympic games has been the performance of the USA track & field athletes, a few of have shone, but most haven’t lived up to the hype. Neither of the relay teams even made it out of the first heat! What’s up with that?! The relay competitions were always the most exciting events in track & field. That’s not to take anything away from the Jamaican team, which has been amazing in the sprint events.

How about the rest of you? Has anyone else been watching the Olympics? Which events & athletes have been the “best of the best” or the most thrilling for you?

I just heard that Skip Caray, long-time announcer for the Braves, passed away today in his sleep. He was 68. My dad is a major Braves fan, so I grew up listening to Skip calling games. They weren't (and won't be) the same without him. I didn't know if there many Atlanta fans here or not, but I thought I would share.

I was trying to find info on the Dallas Diamonds v Chicago Force final in Chicago, when I accidentally came across a live radio play by play. When I tuned in, the score was 29/29 with a 49 seconds to go. OMG it was so exciting. I couldn't see what was going on and didn't really understand what the guys were saying, but I could hear the excitement.

Then it went into sudden death and DALLAS won!!! Why do I care? Because manette and her family flew to Chicago to see daughter Emily, play in the finals. Emily is the Diamond's amazing kicker.

Manette will be going beserk, and she won't be able to talk for three weeks! Judi and I were lucky enough to see the semi-final game in Seattle and that was a blow out almost for Dallas.

So YAYYYYYYY Dallas Diamonds, YAYYYYYY Emily!!!OMG, what a nail-biter!

Really disheartening news about the Pittsburgh Steelers.... -- Martian Barb, 21:24:33 07/09/08 Wed [5]
Most of you know that I am a die hard Pirates fan, but I still love the Steelers. Well, this week there have been all kinds of reports about the Rooney family and the ownership of the team. It seems that this year the NFL in all it's wisdom has changed some of it's rules. Team owners are no longer permitted to have any part in any race track or any type of casino ownership. It makes sense in this day and age, but the extended Rooney family has part ownership in several racetracks. There are five Rooney Brothers, Dan being the most noteable with the Steeler organization. They all own 16% of the team along with a cousin who also owns 16%. The team is estimated at being worth over 900 million! Dan Rooney wants to buy out each of his brothers and cousin at a rate of 5% a year over so many years until he has controlling interest in the team, but his brothers don't think that is enough money! Can you believe that. Now another investor is interested in buying controlling interest in the team. that would mean that the Rooney fmaily would no longer have controlling interest in one of the most valuable football teams in the NFL. This man could also move the team from Pittsburgh, although he said that he is a die hard Steeler fan, but nothing is set in stone. This is just about as upsetting as losing the Stanley Cup, as upsetting as having another losing baseball season...well, that is expected, but nevertheless upsetting. We just can't have the Steelers move to another city. That would be a disgrace to Art Roney's memory and a disgrace to this city and all of it's fans. I think that Dan Rooney's brothers are acting like spoiled brats and their father would be ashamed of them. OK, that's my rant for teh night! Thank you very much....

- Hey MB-- this is OT...but the Pittsburgh Passion is playing the Chicago Force for the Eastern Division championship on Saturday as well....so if the Diamonds win in Seattle we might play the Passion for the championship game July 26th...in Chicago.... My husband's baby brother Kyle Farrell, who was 3 years old when I started dating my husband, and is now a beautiful buff 19 year old kid with a fast ball in the high 90's, just signed with the Atlanta Braves this morning! I'm so proud of him!

The Dallas Diamonds defeated the Seattle Majestics 38-6 on July 12th so now they move on the National Championship game in Chicago on July 26th. Chicago beat Pittsburgh on July 12th as well. -- manette, 21:40:52 07/21/08 Mon [6]
We will be home team-- even though it's played in Chicago. The city was chosen before the season and Chicago was lucky enough to be playing in their home town.

I had so much fun cheering them on in Seattle and judi and Cece were nice enough to go to them game with me. Cece didn't know much about football, but judi did a good job explaining it..lol. Emily-- my daughter-- made 5 extra pts and a field goal. yay Emily. (judi and Cece were also nice enough to show me Seattle and Vancouver in the limited time I was there-- and both cities are gorgeous! Thanks you two!)

We are all flying to Chicago Friday night for the final game of the season..so wish us luck-- unless you're from Chicago and then -- may the best team win!

- I always post on the Football pool, but until I watched this game, I'd no idea what the heck it was all about. I really enjoyed watching Dallas beat up poor little Seattle (who had Canadian players too.) Mama manette, told me I couldn't feel sorry for the other team....LOL. Seriously, even I could tell Dallas played great despite the unfair penalty calls. And Emily was a star! I wish we could be in Chicago cheering on the team. I'll be cheering from afar. Brag time! My daughter's team starts the playoffs this Saturday against the California Quake. Both teams are undefeated going into the playoffs so it should be a good game. If they win they will probably go to Seattle to play-from what I hear it's within walking distance of judi's new digs-- and if they win that game, they will go to Chicago for the championship game on July 26th!

They will be playing at 3 o'clock in the Texas heat on Saturday. Go Diamonds!!

Wow what a game Sunday. I went to work for 12 hours yesterday a very tired nurse. I tried very hard to stay up to watch the 3rd OT. Made it to the end of the 2nd OT. I had it on in the bedroom and was holding the remote control in my hands when my husband came into the bedroom and took the remote out of my hands, turned the TV off and told me that the Pens WON! I can't beleive that I fell asleep. I had to get up at 0500 for work and work 12 hours. Everyone was just a little tired from watching the game. Most stayed up until the 2nd OT. It was definitely worth staying up and being a little tired. I just hope that Gonchar and Malone can play tonight. You know, at this point, even if they don't win, they proved that they deserve to be in the finals. The game in Pittsburgh is s ell out tonight and the big screen will be out in front of the igloo again tonight. Hopefully, the storms will stay away. The white out will be there again. It is sad that they lost last Saturday night. It would be a different game tonight, but, I still have faith, it will go to game seven and teh Penguins will win.

Finals time for all of those who have played the pool.

Final is between

Crusaders who have only lost two games all season and are at their home ground. This is the coaches last game with them before he heads off to coach the Australian National Team, he has been there for a long time, so the troops will want to give him a good farewell vs

Waratahs who have had a mixed season, but they too will lose their coach (albeit in very different circumstances). As a tribute to the fact that it was management and not players who wanted to terminate his contract, they will want him to go out on a high note.

So, pick the margin, any score that you want. Remember, tries = 5, conversions = 2, drop goals and penalties = 3

While I have to admit that it would be nice to have the Pens win at home, I really want them to take the Flyers in 4 games. Sorry all you Philadelphia fans.
