Football Results Week One -- judi and Harm, 03:09:48 09/10/07 Mon [20]
This week, we had four who got all four correct so we had to use the tiebreaker. Harm is very excited about the winner this week because she's such a football junie. He's hoping she can teach him a few plays. So without further ado, here is the winner:

- Well...in defense of the Mountaineers, they are back-to-back defending Div. I-AA (or whatever the new name they're calling it now) National Champions. I taught some kids that are at ASU now (even one that made the football team) and I'm rather proud of them.     - As a Michigan fan, I am stunned by Michigan's losses. It will really hurt their reputation/recruiting. The first loss I could laugh off as a fluke, but this second butt-kicking is even more embarassing for them, I think. I t seems to be the talk of the state. Many are calling for the firing/resignation of Coach Carr. I have friends who live for Michigan football. They are not happy campers, to say the least. We had great participation last year and some of the winners actually picked based on the pictures they liked or their favorite cities. So you don't have to like football to play. After all, the grand prize is a night with Harm. But everyone wins - something, even if they bring up the .

Every week, we pick on 4 games and Harm gives his own analysis.

So come one, come all and lets get ready to Harmble!!!!

I'm posting the first game a bit early because I'll be out of town til September 6th, so here goes!!!!

Game 1 - The New Orleans Saints vs the Indianapolis Colts This game will be played Thursday, Sept. 6 to kick-off the NFL season. Harm says that while the Colts are the Superbowl champions, the Saints are a great team. They have Reggie Bush who tore it up last year and Drew Brees is a pro-bowler. Harm thinks it's going to be a great game.

Game 2 - The Pittsburgh Steelers vs the Cleveland Browns Harm says Big Ben had a great pre-season game the other night but is he back or is he still soft in the head from his injury? I guess only Martian Barb knows for sure. The Brownies have Brady Quinn now and Harm hopes he gets some time at qb. This is one of the great rivalries, so Harm thinks it will be a great game.

Game 3 - The Chicago Bears vs the San Diego Chargers Da Bears were in the SuperBowl last year and lost to the Colts. Grossman was less then stellar, but Harm says he's worked a lot in the off season and with their defense should be a contender. Harm thinks the Chargers should have been in the SuperBowl. Of course, he's a bit prejudice being from SD. But he thinks this season is theirs.

Game 4 - The New York Giants vs the Dallas Cowboys Harm says this is another great rivalry. These teams really hate each other. He says the big question for the Giants is "will he or won't he?" That is, will Michael Strahan retire? Harm thinks it could be a distraction. Of course, the big question mark for da Boys is which Tony Romo will show up?

Tie breaker is the total of the Bears / Chargers game. Don't forget to do this because if you do, you can lose a night with Harm.

I really, really love baseball and the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates have been playing so very bad this year and are in last place. They have had about 15 years of losing that the fans in the city are so very tired of it. It really is sad to see a team with such a long history and probably the most beautiful ball park in the country struggle like this.

My husband and I went to a game last week. For a Monday evening, there were a lot of fans at the game, but I never heard so many negative comments about the team, managers and the owmners. After watching the game for a while, I have to say, every comment was justified! The players have quit playing. There was no hustle. The manager of the team left the pitcher in the game after giving up 7 runs in the first inning! Who does that? The players were booed. It was so very sad!

The reason I am bringing this up is that Steelers Traingin season started yesterday. It seems like baseball is now forgotten. The people who were sitting behind us at that game started to chant..."Here We Go Steelers!"

I am so afraid that is something isn't done with this team over the off season, that people will stop going to the games and the owener will sell the team. We will then have a beautiful, empty ballpark and that will be a waste. I think the owners should wake up and get a team that will hustle and provide a winning season for the Pittsburgh fans. I know that I will continue to go to the games, but that is just me. I went in the early '80's when most of the team was involved with drugs. I just want to go to a game and see a win.

It is sad when the fans start to cheer the Steelers during a baseball game and it isn't even football season, yet.

- Barb, as I understand it, don't the Pirates have the smallest bankroll in baseball or one of them? Even with the luxury tax in baseball, still the Yankees, Red Sox and even the Rangers (and it hasn't paid off for them) just keep on spending money. It is sad, but the Steelers are king in Pittsburgh and always have been. In Dallas, despite the large payroll, the Cowboys will always be king there. That's the way it goes.   - Yes, they do, judi. That is the most sad part of all of this. Pittsburghers have always been behind the Pirates, but this is getting so ridiculous. I think it is the lack of caring from the management and the managers. For the longest time, the players were playing as hard as they could, but not, they also don't care. Looking for info on the sport of cross country -- shygirl, 23:01:25 08/24/07 Fri [8]
My son has chosen to participate in a sport none of us has previous experience in -- cross country. His first meeting is tomorrow, and we plan to go watch him run, but we don't know how this works. Do we park our lawn chairs at the finish line and wait for him to arrive? Would we possibly see him running in several course locations? Can someone enlighten me on how this works?

- Probably too late to do you much good, but my limited experience with cross country meets gave me the impression that most people watch the start, then depending on the course, may be able to walk across and see another stretch, then go back to the finish line. - Thanks for your comments! We just returned from the meet and your recollections were right on. This particular course was squeezed into a compact space, so we were able to move about and holler at our son in several different places. By the way, he did fairly well for his first time out. - I didn't get to see the men's final, but did anyone catch Venus Williams' win in the women's final? She had a great tournament and the lowest seeded player (I'm assuming in WTA rankings, because she was listed as ranked 31st) to win the championship. Seriously though, off the top of my head the sports team would be the Saskatchewan Roughriders - they are the CFL football team there (the Cdn version of the NFL). My wonderful new city, Portland, got the first pick in the NBA draft. And they drafted Greg Oden from my alma mater, Ohio State! YEA!!!!!

For Carly and Bucklies, I've been listening to a lot of talk sports and locally, they say Oden is the BEST player to come out in years. He's a dominant big guy who will help get the Blazers winning again.

This year, I'm going to try and follow the NBA though as most of you know, the NFL is my first love.

U.S. Open Week -- Martian Barb, 11:52:09 06/13/07 Wed [8]
Is anyone here really in to golf? Well, this week, the U.S. Open is here in Pittsburgh at the Oakmont Country Club. My husband drives right past the country club on his way to work and has had to change his route for the last TWO months because of all of the prep work for the Open. It takes him almost twice as long to get home because of it.

I am just not sure having it here in Pittsburgh is really worth all of the inconvenience. The parking alone for the Open is a major hassle. People are parking almost 10-20 miles away and being shuttled to the Club. Homeowners have actually moved their own furniture out of their homes and put it in storage and rented out their houses to people for the week because they didn't want to be around the area for the week.

Then there is the "exclusivity" of the Country Club setting (You can tell that I am not that type!). Our very young Mayor of Pittsburgh had only one wish, to meet Tiger Woods. He called the Country Club and was DENIED the request! Have to give him credit, though because he got in his car and went to the Club and "crashed" a luncheon. The security would not let the Mayor of PIttsburgh even get one picture with Tiger. I know that he was wrong in doing this, BUT, having the Mayor of the host city attending the luncheon would have been proper. The club said that it was a private affair hosted by American Express and they were responsible for the invitations.

My husband is going there this afternoon for the last of the practice sessions, No cameras are permitted, no purses, bags, only wallets...so you can spend your money. This is also the only place where you can buy anything associated with the US Open.

I don't know, it was here in 1994 ans it wasn't like this at all and I just don't think it is worth it.

My husband's little brother, who isn't so little anymore standing at 6' 4" is only 17 and every college and major league baseball team in the country is beating down his door to get him to sign with them when he graduates in June. and i know there are some great players in the state who because of where they play(the portland area)get more press than farrell but i have to tell you i think he's the best player in oregon. he hit a bases loaded bomb tonight that may not have came down yet.he also had a triple and a double and i think 6 rbi's. he has yet to lose a game pitching and was an all state outfielder last year and is once again playing a great outfield. all this and he is class all the way on and off the field.

- Gibson, last year the All Star game was in Pittsburgh. The tickets were sooooo expensive and soooo very hard to get. I have season tickets to the Pirates games and couldn't even get an outfield seat for the game. It was amazing. I settled for watching it on TV. Josh Hancock was killed in a car crash last night in St. Louis. He was 29. The game against the Cubs has been postponed due to the tragedy. This is the 2nd time in 5 yrs this has happened to the ball club. Ironically it was another pitcher who had a heart attack and died when they were scheduled to play the Cubs.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Cards and the Hancock family.

- Things are coming out regarding the events leading to Josh Hancock's crash. It's being reported he was involved in another car crash after leaving the East Side (where all the strip clubs are located across the river) at 5:30 a.m. a few days before his death. The same day, he reported late to our day game vs the Reds saying he woke up late. The night of his fatal crash he was offered a cab ride home at Mike Shannon's restaurant and declined. I want to say that I am thoroughly and completely disgusted with the way certain fans have behaved after the last two races. If you're not a fan, you might not know, but you'll probably hear about it anyway if you watch sports news on tv.

Last week, Jeff Gordon won at Phoenix, tying the late Dale Earnhardt's total win record of 76 wins. Jeff hadn't won a race since last fall, and had been waiting for that win for a while. His team had carried a #3 flag in their hauler ever since in anticipation of #76. Jeff drove around the track last week with the #3 flag flying from his window in tribute to a great fellow driver. "Fans" threw full beer cans, trash, and even whole coolers full of melting ice over the fence and down on the track - AT GORDON.

Dale Earnhardt, "Junior", visited Jeff in Victory lane for a congratulatory handshake, and told reporters that he was happy for Jeff, that Jeff and his dad may have been rivals on the track, but had a mentor-student relationship off the track, and that he wasn't happy with the way the fans reacted. He said so again in a press conference on Monday. He even told the fans that if they felt the need to throw something, at least throw toilet paper.

This week - yesterday - Jeff won again at Talladega, effectively passing Dale, Sr. in all-time wins, and moved up to 6th place on that list (Richard "The King" Petty is #1 with 200). Yesterday would also have been Dale, Sr.'s 56th birthday. The fans were warned that if they threw things on the track after the race, they'd be arrested. They threw things, and the cops arrested some, but couldn't get them all. Jeff curtailed his on-track celebration (usually a long burn-out along the front of the main grandstand) and headed straight to Victory Lane. Security was called to escort Jeff's spotter (the guy who stands at the top of the grandstand and "spots" trouble from a bird's-eye-view) down through the stands and into Victory Lane.

What is WITH those people? I mean, I know most of them are drunk, and after sitting in the Alabama sun for 5-6 hours, anyone would be a little loopy, but what kind of mentality thinks it's okay to throw dangerous objects at winning opponents???

I understand that many were saddened and grief-stricken over the loss of Dale Earnhardt on the last lap of the 2001 Daytona 500, but some of these people have turned him into some sort of demi-god or saint who needs defending at every turn, and that all NASCAR records be frozen in order to keep Dale's records in tact for the ages.

Although Gordon and Earnhardt had a long on-track rivalry, the fans were the ones who made it an all-out war eclipsing any prior feud in history. The Hatfields and McCoys, the Montegues and the Capulets, the Sunni's and the Shi'ites... They ain't got nothin' on the animosity that exists between Earnhardt and Gordon fans.

But the thing is... I've NEVER seen Gordon's fans throw things at "Junior" when he wins. The Crown Prince of the sport descended from moonshiners may be a favorite of the ladies and a hot endorsement deal, but he doesn't hold the same sway over the fans as his father did. I suspect there'll be a statement from Junior's camp this week, but it won't do any good. Any driver accomplishment that threatens to push Senior's figures to the back pages of the history book will be scorned and the driver hated. And the "conspiracy theories" will multiply.

Personlly, I'm a fan of both Jeff Gordon and his teammate Jimmie Johnson, so this is not the first time I've seen disgusting acts of unsportsmanlike conduct displayed toward my favorite driver(s). But it doesn't matter WHO it is, it's still disgusting and unsportsmanlike (not to mention dangerous), and has no place in a civilized society.

Someday someone else (maybe several someone elses) will surpass Dale's win record - and possibly even Gordon's, too. Dale has 7 championships to his credit. Jeff has 4 and is looking on track to add #5 this year. He could potentially tie or pass THAT Earnhardt record, too. Will these fans continue to show the world the most debased side of NASCAR? Is THAT the image they want for their sport? NASCAR is still considered the last bastion of everything wrong with "white Southern males", and the fans who show the world their hairy a$$es when Jeff Gordon wins will simply continue the prejudices.

Class and good sportsmanship go a long way, and the fans could learn a few things if they actually paid attention to the way their favorite drivers behave OFF the track.

This is the most interesting team to come around for a long time. There are only two members of the team who have every been on a playoff team. Heck, there are only two members who are even in their 30's. Most of the team are either teenagers or early 20's. This is one amazing team. At the beginning of the season, no one, even the people of PIttsburgh thought they would ever win any games, let alone be in the playoffs. Everyone in the city thought the team was going to move to another city. Now, we have this amazing team, we're getting a new arena, and the team is staying here in Pittsburgh. It's truly due to the dedication of the fans, the young mayor, the county executive and of course Mario (I know he wanted to move it, but he held out to get what he wanted).

Even if they don't win the Cup, they are definitely winners to every Pittsburgher. Go Pens!

Boston College lost to Michigan in the National Championship Hockey game in St. Louis Saturday night.
