Hello Keith,
This is a difficult one due to the time period he would likely have served.

Following the closure of the Third Seamen's Register in 1857 no central register of seamen was kept for 56 years. The Board of Trade felt that the Agreements and Crew Lists provided an adequate means of recording information about the seamen without the need to create a separate register.

The Fourth Register, (Central Indexed Register), was started in October 1913 and continued until 1941. Unfortunately the entries for 1913-1918 were destroyed therefore the register covers the actual period 1918-1940.

If he served in the MN between 1918 and his death in 1930 then there may be something in the Fourth Register.

The Fourth Register of Seamen's Service is held in microfiche at the National Archives and not available online. However, the original cards are held with Southampton City Archives and an email to them is the way to go here.

I am lead to believe they will make a £10 charge for a search.
