The VA does not decrease disability compensation when a veteran turns 80. In fact, age can offer additional protections.
Once a veteran reaches age 55, the VA generally stops scheduling routine reexaminations for disability ratings unless there's a clear reason to believe the condition has improved. By the time a veteran turns 80, their rating is typically considered stable or protected, especially if:
- The rating has been in place for 20 years or more (protected from reduction unless fraud is involved).
- The condition is considered permanent and total (P&T).
- The disability is static (not expected to improve).
So rather than reducing benefits, the VA tends to preserve or protect them as veterans age.
