New Years Day landed in Da Nang, went AWOL to see my only brother EO3 Howard Landis, a SeaBee in Chu Lai and they sent him home the next day. The whole place stinks, I'll never forget the smell. Flew up to Dong Ha and riverboat to Cua Viet.

>>Cu Chi during Tet 1968....wow what a time it was! I was with the 725th Maint Batt located across from the 25th Evac area at the end of the runway. Our company area got hit hard during my time there from 9/67 to 9/68. The location at the end of the runway was always in the path of the "walking" of morters and rockets up and down the air strip. My platoon also manned PC's from the 3/4 Cav during TET, due to the lack of personel to man them from the 3/4 Cav. Welcome home my friend! It is always a strange feeling to look back and see how close at times I was to not coming home. I feel very fortunate to have come back, as many of our friends did not. It came down to how the one who was shooting the rocket or morter at us was breating at the time he fired. A slight twinge and it could have been me not returning home, many close calls ! I have been to "The Wall" about 4 times, a very sobering experience each time. I am still very proud of my service and dedication over there, regardless of the return home environment. If my memory is correct you were over near the main base flag pole, there was a 125th comm bunker in that area.

The President of the United States, takes pride in presenting the
NAVY CROSS posthumously to:

HM3 ROBERT MICHAEL CASEY
UNITED STATES NAVY

CITATION:

For extraordinary heroism on 16 May 1968 while serving as a corpsman with Company "G", Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, 1st Marine Division in commection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. During Operation ALLENBROOK, Company "G" was moving through a fortified village in Quang Nam Province to engage an estimated 200 North Vietnamese Army Regulars. Suddenly, the point elements came under heavy enemy fire, sustaining numerous casualties. Petty Officer Casey unhesitatingly moved forward under the intense hostile fire and administered medical aid to one of the wounded Marines. Although wounded himself, he disregarded his own injury as he proceeded to another casualty to render medical treatment. Wounded again while assisting his comrade, Petty Officer Casey steadfastly continued his efforts and moved to the aid of still another casualty, receiving two additional wounds while treating the Marine. When other Marines moved forward to evacuate Petty Officer Casey, he adamantly refused to leave the battle area, stating that he wanted to continue to treat the wounded. After being evacuated to the rear by his companions, he encouraged the casualties around him and provided instructions to others in applying battle dressings. Upon hearing a wounded Marine call for aid, Petty Officer Casey dauntlessly crawled to the man and, while treating his injuries, was mortally wounded. By his unflagging courage, selfless concern for the welfare of his comrades, and unfaltering devotion to duty, Petty Officer Casey upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Was there May 5, 1968 to May 4, 1969 in Long Bhin with the 117th AHC. Next to us was the 195th AHC. I'm looking for a few buddies: Sp4 Kraus from Upstate New York, Sp5 Jenkins from Possum Corner Georgia, Sp4 Lennoard Cox from Utah. We all worked in the same helicopter engine repair shop. I just had a meeting with Sp5 Thomas Snyder a few weeks ago.
Hope to hear from someone.

June 20, 1968 - at 4:03 p.m. the Dong Ha combat base main ammo dump took a direct hit of a couple of rounds. We were located next to the dump (NSAD) on the hill. If memory serves me correctly -it blew up for a total of 36 hrs. At 11pm we came out of our bunker, when the word was passed that a ground assault against us was believed to be coming. I thought - how stupid Charlie must be -coming in when everything else was going out! Laid up against a sandbag wall for hours. At one point the compound mutt "Hootch Pooch" got up and ran, and then a piece of shrapnel struck where he had been. I told Sonny Brigman, to put the dog between us, and when he runs - we would run! Funny now - but not then! thanks for listening to the story. marty

Actual battle occured 24-26 August. North hill of Special Forces Camp was over run. After callinfg in air strikes the hill was retaken by Mike Force(B-55 and B-20). Most of the fighting was over by 26 Aug althought action continued in the area through September. Mike force and a US unit operated in the area through this period. I arrived a/o 27-28 Aug and no SF at the camp was kill after I arrived. Check Mike Force web page www.mikeforceassoc.org there are go accounts there.

Doc,
I remember the incident some what. I know the air strip sure had a lot of causalties on it. If you could give me more details about it I would sure appreciate it. (dates, times, names, actions). I am interested in filling the gaps in my own memory. The best place to get info is the Mike Force web site. just search for Mike Force. Or try www.greeberet.net, and www.mileforceassoc.org

I never went to VietNam, but I have vivid memories of September 15, 1968. I was in the Army and had just completed AIF at Ft. Polk, La. Sunday morning I was in my barracks when the CQ runner came and knocked on my door. He broke the news to me of my brother PFC James D. Wardlow, USMC, being killed in VietNam on Friday the 13th of Sept. I always thought and always will think that no matter how bitter so many were of the VietNam war that my brother died a noble death and I am proud of him because he was doing what he had always wanted to do and that was be a Marine.

Searching for anyone who was at TOC Barbara, Quang Tri Province, during 1968, thru September 28, 1968. Also searching for anyone who recalls Sgt. Carl Ussery, a FO and Recon Sergeant attached to HHC 1/5 Cav, reported KIA 9/28/68. Do you recall the crash of a UH-1H east of LZ Barbara and/or the crash of a Light Observation Helicoper west of Camp Evans, on or about September 28, 1968?

An update to this posting. June 24 2002 Jeff Loomis found one of my many sights in reguards to my brother in law Cal he contacted us and had Jim Daugherty contact us also We praise the Lord for this as we as a family feel not only have we got to know Cal but we have extended our family also today on June 24 Jim Lockwood contacted me and that is another blessing. Truly as long as the Lord lets me breath I will honor Calvin in any way that I can. Walk with the Lord let him lead you in all aspects of your life as the reward is the truth that you will be united with those lost on earth in the mansions of Heaven and know your Loved. Cheri

When I got to the ward it looked like we'd been ambushed. Their were charts, patients, sheets, equipment all over the ward. It took us till 10AM to learn which patient was in each bed. FNG Medic just only country since 16 October '68 and completed all of the 1st Cav's processing from the 90th Replacement Btn in Long Bien to HHB of 1/30 Artillery in Da Nang. Spent the night in a tent in Da Nang along side of a runway where diesel trucks and tractors were moving supplies and equipment all night. The smell was awful. It was only surpassed by the smoke in the tent that we all were later breathing while sleeping when some idiot in the tent was careless with a cigarette and started a smoldering canvas fire. Arrived at Camp Evans in time to help with preparations for the 1st Cav Division's move south to III Corps (Phouc Vinh). Exciting times! Ah, we were all so immortal in those days.

We were in the process of building this firebase after having made a "strategic retreat" off of FB 29 where the NVA had us zeroed in and were pounding us every day. I was still pretty new and was scheduled to go on my first 'slurp' on Thanksgiving Day. I was a little nervous and hadn't given much thought to the holiday except to think of all the folks at home and how I wished I could be with them.
We went up to the mess bunker and there I saw an amazing sight...guys leaving with plates piled high with just about every kind of food that is associated with the traditional Holiday dinner! I also saw that the officers were serving the meal and having a great time doing so!
I have always had a sentimental streak and the combination of this great meal and the officers serving us first, warmed the cockles of my heart. It was one of the nicest things that happened during my tour of duty and I have never forgotten it.
Of course, I had to 'saddle up' and go out on my first slurp just a bit later, but that just made the day even more memorable! Vietnam was often like that, I guess all the hell made us really appreciate the good times in between...but that meal was above and beyond what I had expected on Thanksgiving Day on a firebase in the Central Highlands of Vietnam.

We found some, ID'd them, and flew out of there as fast and low as we could because the artillary (gobs of artillary) had to cease fire precisely at 1800 hrs. It was one of the most bizzare moments of my tour. All Hell was breaking lose above and around us when all of a sudden it was almost dead silence even though the helicopter was of course making its whop-whop drone. Weird.
That evening I remember we watched Elizabeth Taylor in "Taming of the Shrew" at the outdoor Mary Lou theater. I didn't know a soul there, but as always, we were all buddies that night and it was a cease fire. The next morning, my C.O. from Camp Enari, Capt. Ross, had a Loach come to Mary Lou and pick me up for a "mission" in Dak To which turned out to be to take me to see my buddies I had lived with for about 3 months TDY. It was good to see them again and we had a great party on the airstrip. Peace on Earth that day, but of course it didn't last. I flew another 400 missions after that.

Welcome Home All!

I was a Marine in Vietnam 4/68 to 5/69 .I spent Christmas night on the wire on the northern "new perimeter" of Camp Books north of Danang . Camp Books was the Hqs. of Force Logistics Command or FLC . That Christmas was the lonliest Christmas of my life and those of my fellow Marines . Although we had a little Christmas tree in our hootch ,with a Budweiser can for a star on top that was handed down to us from Marines who served before us , and although the brass tried to cheer us all up as best they could with a terrific meal (I still have the menu), it seemed like no matter how hard we all tried , nothing could releive the pain and lonliness of being so far from home and family! That night on the wire , I was shot at and returned fire immediately . So much for the so-called "cease fire" that was supposedly in effect . I guess nobody told Mr. Charles that he wasn't supposed to shoot at us on Christmas . In any event , every Christmas since 1968 has been gravy for me , but , Christmas always brings thoughts to my mind of our men and women serving in our Armed Forces around the globe .To all our veterans and to all members of our armed forces who might read this ,Merry Christmas ans Semper Fi ! Nov. 27th 1968 the day before Thanksgiving. A co. 2of the 22 3rd platoon was suposed to have a day off. Enevitably we were called out on reactionary for an other unit that got pinned down.We were at fsb Wood outside Dau Tieng. We got on our APCs and headed to the location. When we got ther we could'nt shoot back once fired upon because we didn't know the location of the friendlys we got our but kicked for about 2 to 3 hours. The whole battle must have lasted 10 hours or more, Ishot a record amount of m-60 rounds and eliminated a lot of the enemy.I must have patched up at least a dozen Brothers. We lost a lot of men and APCs. We dug in about 1or 2 in the morning and got back to fsb Wood about 8 in the am. After we got a few hours sleep We did get a pretty good meal that Thanksgiving with a couple of cold ones. WELCOME HOME BROTHERS!

I'm looking for information regarding my Uncle Dennis L. English. He started his tour on August 2, 1968., was killed August 21, 1968 in Long An, South Vietnam.HE was in the 9th infantry.

I would like anything someone may know, my father was there at the same time however, it is to difficult for him to talk about his brother.

If there is anyone who can give me anything I would really like to hear from you, this is most likely the only way I may get to know anything about the young man who died five years before I was born.

Sincerely,
Danielle

P.S. My fathers name is John William English, I don't have any details about where he served but if you knew him please write. Thank you.

Looking for information on 1969 Tet counter offensive. Late 68,captured NVA officer carrying documents and maps, for the 69 Tet offense. The only thing i can find on the net is there was a 69 tet but never got off the ground because of the documents this NVA POW was carrying,i know he was taken to MACV After that i loose track. The POW was captured by me and only me. I was with Dco 2nd Bat 16inf rangers 1st Inf Div He was captured comming through a rubber plantation. I believe a villiage called Dog Leg, Can't rember the real name. Our CO was Capt Shaw,i talked to his RTO Craig Young,he rembers the incident verry well ,but Shaw did all the radio work on this one. After i captured the POW,i called Shaw on the radio and told him what the POW was carrying. He said he will send a squad out to pick up this POW. In the Meantime he called MACV and they told him to call the squad and to secure thier position, that MACV was sending a chopper for him. That is all i know for sure. I have been told by people i served with that there were some big opperations, because of this POW. I am not a glory hunter, but this is a big part of the history of Vietnam,as you all know, there was so many shity things that happened in Vietnam, and when you do something good a little credit is due.I do not know the Platoon that sent the squad out,i am getting in touch with more and more people from Delta Gc but no hits yet, that would rember the incident. I derosed from Vietnam in the middle of Feb 1969. Any help or information would be very helpful. Respectfully Delvin R DeRoss

In late 1968 (Oct) thru early 1969 (Mar) I was at Tong Le Chon Special Forces camp (A-334) in III Corps. During that time elements of the 1st Infantry Division were operating in the aera and one of the brigades had a forward CP in our camp. Also there were a couple of C-130's that crashed or slid of the run way at the camp. I'm looking for anyone who knows the 1st ID units involved, the dates the ubits were there in the area and the C-130 squadron that provided the air re supply. I am also would like to know what field hospital or clearing station and dust off outfit was supporting the operations.

I was stationed in Vietnam in 1969. In Danang and Quang Tri. Trying to find out information but I can't remember well. Vancouver LPD in Danang harbor? MCB4, cannot locate. Before Agent Orange drains me I would like to find the information the Navy says they don't have. FLC was attacked in 1969? I need info on that. I went on convoy from Danang to Quang Tri. Can't remember much about that. I was across the street when FLC was attacked but cannot remember the name of the camp or the helicopter base either. There was sure a lot going on. I would be thankful for any help. 100% disabled. Thanks. USN MCB4, Harvey Butler. vbhb@aol.com.
