I don't think much seperates Garcia from Rattay or McNown. These guys are all backup caliber quarterbacks. My point in framing Garcia in tems of a trade weren't so much because I think it is plausible...I don't think we can absorb the salary cap hit. I just wanted people to consider what they though Donahue could fetch for Garcia on the open market. I don't think that any team with a first round pick would consider trading for Jeff. I think they would prefer to have Eli Manning, or Carson Palmer, or Byron Leftwich.
Terrell Owens is the only guy on the 49ers offense that other teams would be willing to give up a first round pick for...maybe Newberry, too. The point was, this offense isn't that talented, so the frustration with its uninspired play in the WCO is to be expected.
It sounds like Okeafor won't be back. I would guess that either Deese or Fiore are waived...you can't have two, undersized linemen who cannot make it through the season in one piece. Deese breaks down every year. Fiore is a seven year veteran with only one 16 game season to his credit. Lets face it, we need big, strong, healthy beef at the end of the season, and these two guys cannot be relied upon to be there.
Ira Miller writes today, "there's the matter of the ofensive line, an area already neglected for far to long. Derrick Deese plays gamely as an undersized tackle..." When you look up "gamely" in the dictionary, it does not mention the Pro Bowl.
Barlow is frustrated and rightly so. Six touches combined in two playoff games? Maybe he should spend the offseason practicing picking up the blitz...then Hearst would be expendable.
Watch for Derek Smith to be replaced at starting ILB. All his tackles are five yards later than when they should have been made.
Speaking of Miller's first day of the offseason analysis, everything he mentions, he said in his article January 14, 2002. While you are demanding aggressive play calling, and aggressive coaching, don't forget to demand the same of the front office. Maybe Walsh proved himself so us fans don't question him, but at this moment, Donahue's solo flight last offseason included Rumph, a trade DOWN, Rasheed knowing about Ramadaan, Chandler - two place kickers on the 53 man roster...(meanwhile Pittsburg scores with an UDFA they scored at the end of November and went 18 of 19 in FG's attempts, plus kickoffs to the end zone)...John Engelberger, Sean Moran, the Austin Lee experiment...
Greg Knapp is unemployed this morning.
