- The world is a wedding -- Heather Riedel, 04:48:49 03/14/05 Mon
I was wondering if anyone had any insight as to what Goffman meant on page 36 when he says that "the world, in truth, is a wedding". I thought that it was an interesting quote and I wasn't sure what he meant by this. Along the lines of performances I was wondering if he thinks that we not only play roles in every day life, but we play a role when we are getting married to someone and that a wedding is just a performance. I am curious to know if he means that as a bad thing saying that the people getting married are just acting and don't really feel about each other the way they say they feel. Please let me know what you think.

- do we impose meaning on objects? -- Tiffany Barnett, 18:43:32 04/29/05 Fri
In the book, Sounds and Society, the author contemplates an argument that I cannot decide which side I agree with. The argument goes as follows, “meaning of objects resides not in their ability to excite our senses but in the nature of the means in which we have to perceive them.” In the same paragraph, he continues with “far from objects imposing their qualities on us, we impose meaning on them.” After thinking about this and even asking a friend, I’ve decided that it must be a mixture of both, sensory feedback that allows us to touch, see and hear an object to get a mental image and then we produce meaning for the image based on what we already know. For this same reason, I believe that some songs allow people to picture themselves being in a different place. It may be a reason why music is so popular. For a split second some songs can make you forget the bad weather or the stressful day.

- Age aint nothin but a number -- Kim Herman, 09:03:43 04/28/05 Thu
After seeing Domink and Justin's performance I found myself asking what age means to identity in music and in general. A specific quote from the boys that especially intrigued me was that they looked forward to being considered "Not just good for your age--but good." I think that age plays a huge role not only in how we identify ourselves but how others percieve us. Although I could sympathize with the boys there is a "good for your age" factor that is very relevent. We consider the talents of these kids even more impressive because they are so young. The boys even admitt there is an age factor when they commented that the musician from Nickel Creek who was Dominiks hero was "only 13 when he cut his first album." Also, people identify based on their age as is evident in the kids group that forms at festivals. They expressed their delight in playing with people their own age that they could identify with more. So my question is--obviously age matters in music and in society in general, but should it?

- Selling Out -- Rett Rogers, 19:20:00 04/28/05 Thu
We discussed the idea of selling out in our group discussion today. Someone questioned "What is the big deal with selling out?" I think that this questioned is most easily explained and answered.
Music, like literature and film is a form of art. Furthermore, like literature and film, there are forms of music that are not art. There are musicians within our society that begin their career with creating a unique form of art. When artists change their intention from creating art, to selling records to the masses, it is a form of cultural genocide. The mass amount of consumers in America do not respect or purchase music because they see it as a form of art. I think there are many examples of musicians beginning their career one way and then changing in a matter that conforms to norms and sounds that are not true to their former creative expression.
i am not saying that change for artists is always a bad thing. Yet the motive for change is the key factor in justifying whether or not the change was positive.

- Music as Social Action: "Bluegrass Picks" -- Joseph Kobs, 06:16:52 04/28/05 Thu
In Music and Society the author goes in great detail about musis as social action. He states, "Playing music involves more than just a technical ability; it is necessary to be part of a social relationship for any kind of performance to occur (p.168). i think Michelle and the two Greg's made this clear when it comes to "bluegrass picks." You must be able to form in a socially open-minded and conscious group to have the "bluegrass picks" they talked about. Everyone plays a role, in whatever it may be. Some lead a song, while others play in the background until it is their turn. A community is formed where their is not heirarchy. Until, as one of the Greg's mentioned, some musicnazi, as he referred to them, tries to take over the jam. Then you just simply get up and have a drink. Well said Greg, people from the big state can be alright!

- Tuesday April 26th Performance -- Heather Riedel, 21:10:09 04/27/05 Wed
I really enjoyed Tuesdays performance and I thought that it was a great way to end the semester. I thought it was great to have Michelle and the two Gregs there just improvising the songs they were playing like they were at a jam session. It really seemed as if we were at a jam session and I saw many differences from their performance to the performance by Dominick and Justin the week before. Perhaps it was due to their age, but Justin and Dominick seemed a lot more nervous than Michelle and the two Gregs did. I also noticed that Dominick and Justin had a written plan of the songs that they were going to do and they kept referring to it during their time with us. Michelle and the Gregs seemed a lot more comfortable just improvising and playing the songs they felt that they wanted to play at the time. Although Michelle and the Gregs were a lot more comfortable performing in front of us, I felt that Dominick and Justin were a lot better musicians than Michelle and Gregs. Seems to me that playing music just comes so naturally to some people but one common theme that I saw with both groups is that they were doing what they loved and they wouldnt let anything stop them from doing that.

- Relationship between performer and audience -- Jen Stacy, 09:57:45 03/12/05 Sat
I was thinking about the question posed in class the other day about how could Goffman's theory be related to musicians and I was thinking about the interaction between the performer and the audience as one way that his theory could be apply. What makes a live performance great? Obviously if the music is great, but also the ability of the performer to make a connection with the audience, that creates an environment that legitimizes the performance. I know I have been to a few shows that the music was great, but the audience was not engaged in the performance and it just made the whole energy of the event change. In order for a performance to be convincing the audience has to participate in making it appear and feel legitimate. Without audience response the performer's show lacks one of the major aspects that make a live performance wonderful.

- Roles When Alone -- Rett Rogers, 11:28:24 03/17/05 Thu
I was pondering the idea of time spent with yourself in connection to Goffman's ideas about roles. I find it hard to agree with his statements regarding the time humans spend alone. His theory is that we have a conception that somebody is watching us when we are alone, and this causes us to act out a role. I know that this idea does not apply to me because even if I do act out a "role" when I am alone it is most definately not one for an audience. If anything the role I act out when I am alone, is one for myself.

- Honeysuckle Rose -- Kendra, 10:25:40 04/08/05 Fri
I thought that Honeysuckle Rose were great musicians, especially for how young they are. I thought that Bonnie's instrument of the washboard and snare drum creation was really cool. I would never think to look at an instrument as being authentic or original because it seems instruments are pretty standard now, there's not many innovative instruments. However, the washboard with the "picking" gloves was a very original idea. There are some musicians who have created their own instruments and I think that adds to trying to keep music fresh and original, maybe even authentic.

- CLass reunions -- Adam Crabtree, 16:02:32 04/21/05 Thu
After reading the piece about class reunions I had a very negitive feeling about them in the sense that they are very fake and used to boost your own self at the expense of thos you grew up with. I did fin the part about how everyone from your school starts with a similar background and then it is up to the person from there. I see that there is a lot of truth in this because a lot of the excuses people use on why they are not as succesful as another person stem from things like s/he went to a better school, nicer neighborhood, etc and the fact that you are all from a similar background grew up in the same area and all went to school together negates a lot of these things. I think that at the root class reuoins started with good intentions but from there became petty competitions.

With all the performers that we have had in our class, i feel that vince and company were knowledgable towards discussing issues that are relevant to our class. Vince told us about how music keeps ethnicity within a culture, his ideas behind politics and music were quite insightful. he seemed like he has dedicatied his life to, not only music, but how music can impact the world around him. I also felt that being able to improvise like he did for the last song, is a special talent that requires dedication. The idea of poverty of imagination was probably a concept that is going to stick in my head, something that is definetly true in the world.

- Sounds and society -- Kendra, 14:14:43 04/26/05 Tue
"Sounds and society" is an ineresting account of the links between musical culture and sociological culture. The author brings up a lot of good ideas and definitely did his homework. I think there are too many ideas, theories and theorists discussed in this book, though. I think it would have been better if he had chosen key points and talked about them in greater detail. I thought Cooke's theory about the language of music was something to think about ("notes, like words, have emotional connotations"). After hearing many of the guest musicians we have had, that theory makes some sense to me. They all say that if they try to write a song, they can't. However, if they just let it come to them, it's much easier. This seems to be somewhat of an unconscious effort in music writing.

- Women's Music -- Jen Stacy, 21:40:26 04/13/05 Wed
Stacy Holman Jones struggles throughout her most of her ethnography to define and understand women's music, and it is very important to her that she creates a definition that allows for the women's performances to speak for themselves. There are so many stereotypes that go along with the phrase "women's music" such as its lesbian music, its anti-male, and angry. Which are a lot of the same stereotypes associated with feminist, but in reality there is so much more depth and complexity in women's music and in feminism. I think that Jones text did a really amazing job at trying to present the complexity within women's music, and allows the reader to feel the complexity within these different performers. Jones states, "Political, social and musical goals exist in mutable relationship...In some ways women's music performances, politics may be feature, while social and musical goals are inexplicit, opaque. In other performances, music may be the primary goal, with social and political concerns as a by-product or backdrop. Whatever the relationship, the music is concerned with women's experience, whether it celebrates, complicates, or critiques that experience. What's significant about the relationship among political, social, and musical goals and women's experiences is the way they are enacted through performance" (55). In this statement I think she is offering a good definition of the way women's music is dealing with a multitude of different issues (and forms of oppression), but that they are all being experienced in the way that these women perform their music.
It was also really interesting how the issue of racial diversity came up so much within her study of women's music. It has been a long standing critique of 2nd wave feminism that it was very exclusive of women of color, and I think that a lot of the female artist presented in the book came out of the 2nd wave women's movement. Racism is such a hard topic to discuss and when it was presented to the managers of the Club by Virginia that she was concerned about the lack of diversity she was dismissed, and eventually quit. It seems easier to just ignore racism, sexism, and classism than to address our own internalization of these types of oppressions.
In "Song Catcher" I think that it was harder to define the music as women's music within the definition offered by Jones at first, but after thinking about it for I while I could see the connection. In the song sung after the birth of Alice's baby, "I wish I was a single girl again." I could see the political and social critique of women's experiences in that song. They mentioned the loss of freedom and identity that women experience upon marriage, the abuse, and hardship that women are exposed to through marriage. In their desire to be single again they were making a political statement about the situation and state of being a women during that time. I also found the representation of gender to be quite fascinating, Lily challenged a lot of social norms for women and because of that she was a threat to male superiority, such as her not being given permeant post at her university. Lily's presents in the town (as well as her sisters and the other teacher) presented a challenge to the male superiority in the town, which I felt was seen in the scene of the preacher talking about women as temptress, and he call's the women evil and a destruction to their way of life. I feel that christian religion has been used the demonization of women as a way to control and oppress women's sexuality, intelligence, and keep them at a lower social status. (You are more than welcome to disagree with me, but these are just some of my thoughts)

- The real self -- David O., 17:54:50 03/11/05 Fri
According to Goffman, the self is made up of many different roles for different situations. If we are all just playing different roles than who or what is the real you? I beleve that the self is forever changing, growing and always being effected by new people and experiances. Therefore, the real self is always changing and is relative to a certain time. So there is not a core self waiting to be discovered. This is true if what Goffman says is absolute.

- Teacher/Student relationships according to Coles -- Tiffany Barnett, 11:46:33 04/26/05 Tue
On page twenty-four of Robert Coles’ book, he addressed an issue that I’ve never thought of before. He described the teacher/student relationship as more than that of a knowledgeable person teaching another. I really liked the way he used the phrase, “it takes two to tango.” He insists that a teacher learns from his or her students just as much as the student gathers from the teacher. He explains that information can easily be memorized and regurgitated, but for it to truly be learned, it must find a “life in our lives.” We must extend deeper meaning that relates to our lives for us to fully understand what we are asked to learn. What I dont understand is how we can relate everything we learn in a classroom setting to our daily lives to get the most out of the classes we are currently taking. I mean, if you think about all the ridiculous classes we are forced to take to earn a degree, it makes me somewhat skeptical to why we need to learn the many things we do as core requirements when we cannot apply them to our daily lives.

Thursdays performers -- Mark Cormier, 15:38:32 04/25/05 Mon
On thursday, two young performers, i believe the age of 16 and 17, came and pklayed for us in class. To think, my 15 year old little brother could be doing that was quite amazing. Its amazing to see somebody so dedicated and obsessed with what they do. I mean he said if not working or eating, hes playing the instrument. I also got a chance to talk wih the father he i believe he has definetly contributed to the talent of his son. He took he too plenty of shows, gave him the oppurtunity to gain such talent and desirness for something. We all know that parents have great influence over the children and i believe this is a great example. I onlt wish i kept with the french horn!

In my other class, we are discussing mobile communities and this is what i thought of when they described the festivals that they attended. These two seemed to be very authentic, especially with the washboard instrument, completely made from scratch. The idea that Bonnie doesnt even need the instrument there and can use what is given to her is amazing.

- Identity through internet homepages -- Trinidad Silva, 23:10:56 03/22/05 Tue
I agree with the statements Katherine Walker makes in her article on internet homepages. I believe that internet homepages are a place for people to post their personal identities. It allows the creator to reach out and attract certain audiences. Homepages give strangers the ability to see others in a new way. As Katherine Walker said, homepages are a form of narration, which describes a certain identity. It is this identity that links other people together. Homepages are a reprensentation of one self and how that is portrayed through individual activities.

On tuesday we had a guess speaking in class and i would like to comment on that performance. I found myself contimplating many of the ideas that were brought about. When Paul Simon was accused of culturally violating his group, the african drum band (I forget the name), i saw that as a good thing, giving this band a whole new audience, giving them a living. I had a hard time seeing how politcal views are expressed, i feel i need to know more about that topic before i could agree with this.

I thought that one of the excerpts from "Kaleidoscope Notes" was very interesting and relevant to all we have been talking about as far back as Goffman. This is on page 122-123: "Performance provides a medium through which participants embody these selves, identities, potentials, and values, using music to illustrate and interrogate the existing social order." Prior to this statement, Jones talks about "redefining self, creaing opportunities for new identities and social potentials, and portraying an alternative set of values." I think this is important in understanding the theories surrounding self and identity. These statements are saying that we are not stuck in the selves and identities we have constructed for ourselves. If we continue to grow and "redefine" our self we can continue to shape our identities and potentials.

There's hard core and soft shell environmentalism, politics, art, films, people. Here are a few more I thought of; Las Vegas vs. Monaco, Cancun (then) vs. Cancun now, Tupac vs. Ja Rule, Beatles vs. Backstreet Boys, Yo' MTV raps vs. TRL, Ralph Nader vs. John Kerry, 'Save the whales' vs. 'Save the mosquitoes', Matt Dameon vs. Ben Afleck. It was really interesting to have Dominick and Justin come in to give some insight into a younger musician's perspective of the music community. We saw in Jones' book how there are steoreotypes and stigmas against women's music, but now we see that similarly with age. They seemed extremely grounded and intelligent "for their age", more so than I was then. I think they made a good point about the fact that they see many things that other people their age would not see and it will help them have self-control against certain activities, such as drinking. They have such a passion for music that they do not care if their friends think it's "cool" or not.

To me if everyone was always assuming roles to the most productive way then the world would be a lot more predictable place. Obviously I see that there is conformity, but it seems to me that everyone goes about things in there own way and I would like to know how Goffman explains this.

- Song Catcher Movie - viewed April 12 -- Pam C., 22:24:02 04/12/05 Tue
What really struck me about the movie was although the mountain people seemed to lead a quiet, isolated life they still had a lot of problems to deal with - not only their own problems such as bad relationships, child birth, murder, death, but also the problems of "outlanders" such as lesbian relations, discrimination, and commericialization.
They had songs for every occasion. Their songs didn't alway seem to fit the exact occasion - especially in sad times, but the songs seem to maybe have the same emotional tone or even a stronger, sadder feel. I did think it was extreme when the family who was selling their 100 acre farm for fifty cents an acre suddenly grabs a fiddle and begans to sing a song - as a means of expressing their emotions.
Watching the movie and thinking about the term "women's music" I came away with the thought that in the movie the Appalachian music was passed from genteration to generation from either mothers or grandmothers - never once was a father or grandfather mentioned - although men did sing and play insturments - they were taught by females. It seemed this point was reinforced when Mrs. Butler, Tom Bledsoe's grandmother played the banjo quite well.
I had a lot of relatives in Virginia and my family visited them several times a year. I think my Grandmother and some other family members were even more "hillbilly" than those in the movie. Many of the houses did not have running water or indoor bathrooms. Someone was always playing music and everyone was constantly wanting someone to eat.

- Creating Country Music -- Kendra, 10:22:11 04/04/05 Mon
"Creating Country Music" makes me somewhat sad about the music business. I know it is a hard and brutal business, but to read about the beginnings of the commercialization of music is kind of shocking. Only music that was "popular" (which means was sold the most effectively to the people) was recorded and promoted. This is unfortunate because it pushed musicians out that were just as good, but were not the hot sound that was popular. I know this happens today, but I thought that was because of the kind of society we live in that has been commercialized to death. However, to see this happening from the very start of recording, etc. is very disheartening.

I have been thinking about this for a while but just decided to post it today for some reason... I first thought about this when Phil came to present to our class and we were talking about musicians selling out and what not. Now I don't want to offend anyone who listens to Maroon 5, I enjoy their music myself, but for those of you who don't know they used to be called Kara's Flowers. I was telling a friend of mine this who likes Maroon 5 so we decided to listen to some of their music under the name of Kara's flowers and we did not like it at all. It sounded nothing like what Maroon 5 sounds like now and that shocked us very much. It got me to thinking about the class session that we had with Phil. It seems to me (and this is completely my speculation) that the band Kara's Flowers wasnt doing so well selling records so they decided to change the way their music sounded. I was also thinking that in order for them to change the way their music sounded they would have to change their name and create a whole new band with a whole new sound. Leads me to wonder if the band that many know as Maroon 5 now play the music that they play because it is their choice to play that music and they enjoy playing that music or was it to get more people to listen to them and buy their records so therefore were "forced" to make the decision to change to a style that more people would listen to. Was it Maroon 5's choice as a band to change to that music or was it some record executives choice?? What political effect does something like this have on the music industry?? Is Maroon 5 inherently evil for switching the style of music that they play?? I wonder what Phil would have to say about that...

When I was reading the Bruce Springsteen book, I was amazed by the amount of participation and the in depth analysis that the 8th grade class did when talking about the Bruce Springsteen songs that their teacher brought in. It made me think of a couple thursdays ago when Garian was commenting about the lack of speaking up that our generation does (Including our class I assume). I know that I wouldnt have made the observations about the Bruce Springsteen songs that those 8th graders made. I was recently visiting my 85 year old grandfather and made the same observation that Garian made about our class. My grandfather wants to discuss everything with me and he wants to know my opinion on everything from the president to social security to women in the workplace. I prefer not to discuss these things with my grandfather because I know that we will never agree about those things and I dont want to start an argument. I think that we all need to make an effort to start speaking up more in class whether or not we think our opinions are going to be well agreed upon.

As the movie progressed, especially when the old lady began to sing, i noticed all her songs were very angry. They were about people losing their heads and dying. The bluegrass trio that performed for us claimed that the music was originally pessimistic. In the book, stacy seems very eager to learn more, i remeber her saying that she wanted to unsolve the mystery that was on stage. The main character in this movie was relentless, she wanted to record everybodies music and went to great lengths to do so. She was out to prove something.

I really enjoyed Phil's presentation about politics and music. I personally never thought of music in a political way except when a musican alines themselves with a politician or when a song comes accross with a strong political theme. Two examples that come to mind are Midnight Oil's song "Beds are Burning"' written about land being expropriated from aborigines in Australia and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young's song "Ohio"(1970), about the National Guard shooting and killing four Kent State University students during a demonstration against the Vietnam War.
I'm not sure if I will ever listen to music again without somewhat thinking of the political connotation behind the lyrics or music.

I don't know if anyone else has gone to Phil's website (meetphil.com), but you can listen to several sample tracks of his. Track number 2 - called "Back Door" - the lyrics talk about a back door for leaving so nobody knows, and the front door is for making ordinary life into a show. Reminds me of Goffman and his terms front and back stage.

- Authentic Self -- Kendra, 11:11:10 03/28/05 Mon
I thought the discussion of authenticity we had in class on Thursday was quite interesting. We all like to think of ourselves as authentic, not fake, but genuine. But, can we ever be truly authentic? I think if we buy into our own authenticity and really believe that we are being true to ourselves, we are being our real, true selves. Goffman might think this is impossible because the fact that we are trying to be authentic is part of our performance and role playing and therefore we are not being our true self. This kind of thinking seems very circular to me and it seems as though you could continue to go around and around with this logic.

Today we talked about how roles, self and identity are connected. I believe that self is your relfection of yourslef, they way that you see yourself within those roles that you are playing. Identity is the social perception that attain by what others think of you, how they see you. Identity is more of a interaction based relationship between you and your audience. I believe people are always playing roles, therefore creating their self, as well as their identity.

presentation of the "mask" -- mark cormier, 15:24:11 03/11/05 Fri
As the reading, as well as the classroom discussion began, i felt negative towards the way that Goffman presented the presentation of self, or the "mask". I feel there are times that i am being myself and there is no such "mask" being presented to the audience. I sort of felt like Goffman was saying everybody was fake, or not who they really are behind the mask. As discussion continued and ideas were thrown around, I come to realize that everything we do, either unwillingly or willingly will portray some sort of mask. Some role is being played, whether a lover, a teammate, friend, relative, son, daughter, a presentation is being displayed. I dont really like to think of my life and being as playing roles for other people but i guess subconsciously it constantly happens in everyday social interactions.

In Robert Zussman's article, he suggests that there is a relationship between narratives and social structures. Zussman uses autobiographical occasions to demonstrate this relationship. I agree with Zussman, this is because from what we have studied up until now, I have come to the conclusion that we generally define ourselves by the people around us within our performances, through the roles we engage in. This in turn involves social structures. And in narratives like autobiographical occasions, such as, reunions and interviews, these social structures are revealed.

According to Goffman, we make ourselves by performing roles. I had a hard time agreeing with this, as I didn't believe that the actions I endure day to day were performances of the roles I was taking on. But after a lot consideration I began to somewhat understan Goffman's point. I have observed my role as a student and my role as an employee. Through this observation, I have realized I am in some ways putting on a performance through these roles. As my actions through my role as a student and as an employee are different, therefore I understand Goffman's point that through these various roles we put on performances. However, I do believe that these performances are not something we rehearse or think about rather something that comes natural within the roles we are portraying at the given time.

As I was reading the first chapter of Goffman, William James' theory of Social Selves continued to enter my mind. He even has an exerpt form James' theory in this chapter. Since I am a Psychology major this may be why I had this in my mind, but if you compare the two they are very similar. James' theory states that we act differently when we are with different people. He thinks that we have as many social selves as there are people who know us. We have different nicknames that we respond to for different people, our behavior is different according to who we are interacting with, i.e. parents, friends, teachers, etc. This theory is fairly consistent with Goffman's theory of performances and actions being different depending on who the audience is.
