_An added advantage I now have is being able to connect a GPS to my wheel autopilot; this adds another dimension of keeping course to a waypoint where a slavish compass course may become incorrect over time due to unexpected leeway or tidal influences._
Whilst I'm sure this wouldn't happen to you Brian, I was amused to hear that such technological wizardry is apparently responsible for a lot of the dents in buoys and navigational markers.
presumably it is also why when on long passages under engine and in the middle of nowhere we all find another vessel heading in the other way that passes within a cable or so.
We sailor types are fortunate that the rather less direct approach necessitated by wind direction builds a certain amount of variation into our passages, the motor boat boys can have an unfortunate habit of getting rather closer to each other.
